League of Five Nations

So this is the first time I'm going into the story of america, The Indians Category and so the first card I'll talk about from his Section, will be on The League of Five Nations as the title states and this is one of the names of the Irpquois people, but for this video I'll called it Five Nations, so let's not stand here and get into the History from The Indians Section in Story of America Cards.

(Who are The League of Five Nations?)

The League of Five Nations also known as Irpquois, are an Iroquoian-speaking confederacy of First Nations peoples in northeast North America/Turtle Island. They were known during the colonial years to the French as the Iroquois League, and later as the Iroquois Confederacy. The English called them the Five Nations, comprising the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca (listed geographically from east to west).

(The Iroquois Join Forces)

In the late 16th century the League of the Five Nations was founded by a group of Iroquoian-speaking Indian tribes in northern New York, and it soon became the most powerful Indian confederations North of Mexico.

Known also as the league of the Iroquois, it consisted of the Seneca, Oneida, Mohawk, Onondaga and Cayuga. These Tribes together never numbered more than 16,000 men, women and children, but their prowess in battle enabled them to extend their influence from New England and St. Lawrence valley as far west as the Mississippi River and south to the Tennessee River.

Iroquois myths tell how the prophet Dekanawidah, in 1570, influenced the Mohawk chief, Hiawatha, to found a confederation to end the continual warfare that had greatly weakened the five tribes.

The power of the League of the Five Nations stemmed from the strong political and social organization of the Iroquois.

Their society was based on the family group, or "fireside", consisting of the mother and her children, Each family group was part of an Ohwachira, a larger group of related families tracing their kinship through mothers, Two or more Ohwachiras made up a clan, and the various clan together constituted a tribe or nation.

The women who headed the Ohwachiras exercised great power, because they named the males who represented the Ohwachiras in tribal councils.

They also nominated the 50 sachems, or Peace Chiefs, who sat on the Great Council of the League, The council members did not vote as individuals but by tribes.

Each tribe cast one vote and a unanimous vote was required for any decision. The Council had no control over the internal affairs of each nation, but it did work out agreements ending conflicts among members.

Although Dekanawidah hoped the League would bring peace to all Indians, the Five Nations continually fought neighboring tribes, Around 1715 the Tuscarora, who were driven from North Carolina by white settlers, joined the League, which then was called the Six Nations.

League power increased when it aided the victorious British in their duel against the French for control of the New World.

During the American Revolution all the Iroquois tribes except the Oneida and most of the Tuscarora supported the British.

When America effectively won its independence in 1781, the military power of the League ended and its member nations gradually lost most of their land to westward-bound settlers.

(Ending)
