Soon Enough

Lindsey opened the door, the young blonde girl standing there just as Stevie had thought. She gracefully entered the house, and he watched her carefully, looking her up and down. What was it about her that was so familiar? He couldn't stop thinking about it.

"Jenna, that's a pretty name" he said, trying to make conversation.

"Thanks. My full name is Jennifer but I've almost always gone by Jenna."

"Cool" he said, swaying awkwardly, shifting his weight foot to foot. His hands were jammed in his pockets and he stared at the floorboards.

"You're here a lot" she remarked.

"She's my bandmate and my friend" he says, feeling as if she's trying to insinuate something.

"And your ex girlfriend, right?"

"Well, yes, but that was many, many, many years ago."

"Still look pretty cozy to me" she says, looking right at him.

"What are you trying to say, Jenna?" he asks, his tone becoming sharp.

"Nothing" She shrugs, dropping her fringed bag onto the floor by her feet. Her skirt swished as she walked away from him toward the stairs, her boots hitting the steps with a soft knock. Her bracelets clanged together as she made her way up to see Stevie.

"Don't you think you should wait here?" he asked. Where did she get off, walking around like she owned the place?

"Stevie said I was welcome any time, I have a room." she says, stopping halfway to respond. "I mean, don't you? Or do you just share with her?" She raises an eyebrow, giving him a victorious look. He stared at her for a moment, unable to formulate a word of denial. "Cool, so I'm going to go say hi. Is that okay with you, Linds?" She turns back around, finishing her ascent. He hears joyful noises coming from upstairs and he stamps his foot like a petulant child, crossing his arms over his chest. Stevie emerges from the upstairs with Jenna, all smiles.

"Hey!" Stevie said "I heard you guys talking down here."

"Yeah, we had a lovely little conversation" Lindsey lied and Jenna smirked at him.

"Well, that's so great! I'm glad you two are getting along." Stevie smiled warmly. "You always look so fresh and beautiful" she said, complimenting the younger blonde.

"Thank you, Stevie. That is such a nice thing to say" Stevie gave her a loving squeeze and walked her into the kitchen.

"Would you like tea, honey?"

"Sure" Jenna says, leaning onto the counter, propped up on her elbows.

"Any preference?"

"Not really. Hey, shouldn't I be doing that for you, since I'm your assistant?"

"Don't worry about it. I didn't hire you to do everything for me. I'm not a diva!" She says and Lindsey chuckles, joining them at the counter. "Okay, I'm not that much of a diva. I just need you to keep track of my schedule, keep me in line at events and little things like that. Other than that, you will just be another girl who can live in my house and hang out with me. We can go shopping or whatever else you'd like to do."

"You're sure?"

"Positive. Is peppermint okay?"

"Yeah, that's perfect" Stevie starts boiling the water on the stove, going to the cabinet to retrieve her loose leaf and her steepers. She moves around just as gracefully as Jenna, Lindsey thinks. The two interact like mother and daughter, gossiping, sharing stories and talking about all things from interior design to fashion. They both love European fashion magazines, Stevie showing Jenna her massive stash of them hidden away in some secret drawer. "You're so cool, Stevie."

"Honey, I have probably never been cool in my life."

"That's not true. You're Stevie Nicks, rock goddess!"

"Well, I appreciate you saying so" Stevie says.

"Is there anything I can start on now or do I really have to wait until Sunday?"

"There's not much to do, really. When Lindsey leaves we can go shopping...unless he wants to tag along?" Stevie turns to Lindsey, raising an eyebrow, just knowing he would say no.

"Actually, that sounds wonderful" Lindsey says, glaring at Jenna. She turns her head and he smirks. Who's the victor now?

"Oh! Well that's great! Two of my favorite people!" Stevie, so oblivious to the tension between them, given them each a little squeeze, going back to prepare the cups for herself and her assistant when the kettle sings. "So where would you like to go first, honey?" she asks, blowing on her tea.

"I'm not really sure. I love jewelry and I know this kind of hippie little shop. It's where I've gotten everything I'm wearing. They have it all!"

"Ooh...what do you think, Linds?"

"Perfect" he says, forcing a smile.

"Won't it just remind you of when we were young? When we first moved to Los Angeles and we had our tiny apartment, mattress on the floor..." She trails off, fully immersed in romantic visions of the past. "It would be so lovely!"

Lindsey rolls his eyes but agrees. "So lovely" he echoes, half-heartedly.

"Then it's settled! I'll go get my purse!" Stevie floats out of the room, thrilled to be going out especially since Lindsey agreed to go. That was a rarity!

"She is so happy! I love her energy!" Jenna says.

"I bet you do. Or maybe it's her money you love. Where did you come from anyway?"

"That's a bit rude, don't you think?"

"Well?"

"I'm local. Very local. I don't think you should be speaking to me that way" she says, sipping her tea.

"Oh really? Why? Are you going to sick Stevie on me?" He scoffs. "Baby, I have known her much longer than you've even been alive."

"Yes, you have" she agrees. "But for some reason, I feel like I could make her really, really angry with you"

"And how do you suppose you'll do that?"

"I have more than a little bit of information about you from a very reliable source"

"Cute. Like a tabloid? They sell garbage to kids like you everyday"

"No, not 'like a tabloid'. You will find out soon enough" She takes a final sip of her tea, placing the cup back down on the counter. She stares at him with stormy blue eyes and he stares back with his own. "I'm going to go check on Stevie." she says, leaving the room. Lindsey stares out the doorway locked in his head now, wondering what the hell any of that meant.
