Chapter Thirty-One: Aftermath

George had a terrible migraine that he could not shake. He blamed it on the previous night's events and that only induced the pain. He doesn't remember much from last night, but his headache is proof that last night turned out to be pretty stressful.

The last thing he remembers is hugging his father. The events that led to such an embrace has been forgotten, but the embrace itself has been forever embedded in George's head.

His father's larger frame wrapping around him tightly while whispering incoherent words into his son's ear was something George would never forget, but he still wishes he could remember everything else.

It must have been quite a scene for Evelyn. George didn't mean to settle things with his parents in front of Evelyn the way he did, even when the sole intent for the impromptu visit was to do just that. George still didn't want it to play out the way it did - it was too personal.

He and Evelyn maybe in a relationship, but there are certain things that George still didn't feel comfortable sharing, especially his issues with his parents.

Nevertheless, Evelyn apparently took it well from what George can remember. She held his hand and remained silent as the Mills' settled their battle with one another. George appreciated her respect. He was afraid she would intrude and try to play mediator, but instead, she sat back and only comforted him when necessary. George really had to thank her for that.

Therefor, he slept a lot lighter last night and actually looked forward to this morning. Well, not exactly, but something along those lines.

George groaned as he turned over. The mattress beneath him creaked with his movements. When he was finally on his side, George released a heavy sigh and forced his eyes opened.

He blinked a few times to adjust to the bright room. From what he can see, this is not his bedroom. He is not in his apartment. He sighed once more before closing his eyes again.

He doesn't want to get up. George knows that if he rises from the bed, he will have to face his parents. If he has to face his parents, his migraine will never go away. If his migraine never goes away, George will be stuck with his agony. Therefore, the bed is his safe haven.

Well, it was until the sound of the door knob jiggling caused his eyes to shoot open. The bed was his haven until her presence consumed him. The bed was his haven until she became the definition of the word.

"Are you okay?" She whispers lifting the covers to squeeze herself in.

George never opened his eyes as she stole the silence of the room. He didn't even open his eyes as he found her torso and wrapped his arms around her. No, he didn't want to open his eyes even as he pulled her close and inhaled. The bed no longer mattered. She is his haven now.

"I'm a fucking sap for you, Ev." He sighs before inhaling her again. "A complete fucking sap."

Evelyn readjusted herself comfortably against his chest and sighed aloud. George wasn't making any sense and it still bothered her to not know why.

She knows it has something o do with last night's events, but,  obviously, George surely does not want to talk about those events. She can understand why, there was a lot going on that night.

After his emotional breakdown, his mother came to his aid and apologized to him in English before whispering sweet nothings in their native tongue. His father moved slowly as he joined mother and son. He looked pained as well when he lifted George's chin and looked him in the eye.

Mr. Mills didn't say anything but father and son nodded at on another. George released Evelyn's hand and rose to acknowledge his father. The two men wrapped their arms around each other and cried together. The father apologizing for his son's pain and the son finally letting go of his pain.

It was quite a lot to take in for Evelyn. She knew George was hurting but didn't know that the pain was so terrible. She learned to appreciate her loving parents that night. She also noted to remember this when her mother or father is working her last nerve.

Witnessing the Mills parents reconcile things with their son made Evelyn's heart swell as well. She was glad that George could finally knock that chip off of his shoulder. She was glad that he has a chance to start over. She was glad that he wanted the chance to start over. George wasn't an asshole that night, he was a broken boy bound to be fixed.

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" Evelyn asked reeling away from her reverie.

George squeezed her further against his chest and pecked her forehead before sighing.

"No, I guess not." He pecks her forehead again. "I guess not."

Evelyn's eyes closed the first time his lips touched her skin. Her stomach did that butterfly thing it always does when he kisses her. She felt a tingle in her spine at his confession. She wanted to know the meaning behind it. She knows there is more. There has to be.

"Why do you say that?" She voices her thoughts inhaling slowly.

George's index finger was tracing circles into her exposed torso. The little motion was stirring up those butterflies in her stomach and for all of the right reasons.

"Say what?"

His thumb had joined the action, caressing her side while his index fingered continued tracing circles. Evelyn had to admit that his ability to multitask like that caused certain thoughts to swirl in her mind. Thoughts that are inappropriate at a time like this and especially underneath the roof of George's parents home.

"That..." Evelyn exhales slowly again. "You're a sap."

George's fingers stop for a moment. He noticed Evelyn's breathing had changed and he was enjoying the effect he has on her, but he does not feel like explaining the effect she has on him. That was territory he is not ready to cross.

"You ask too many questions." He starts up his fingers again.

Evelyn places her hand over his to stop his motion. She needed him to stop so she could think properly. George seems to always avoid her questions, especially if they seem invasive. She knows this because every time things become a little tense, he shies away. Their first time having sex together would be the prime example.

He avoided her for days and then she had to beg him in order to do it again. She hates stepping on his toes and wants to move at an appropriate pace, but she wants answers. She needs answers. She does not want to be the only one feeling the way she feels. Even if she herself cannot explain the way she feels.

"That's because you don't give enough answers."

George removes his hand from Evelyn's and rolls onto his back. He does not want to have this conversation. There is only one thing it can lead to and he is not ready for that.

"I don't know what you want from me." His tone hardens.

Evelyn frowns at his change in demeanor and takes the mute hint that followed. She will not lay here and beg for an answer. She will let him think about it and possibly beg her to listen. That sounded hell of a lot better than sobbing for him to tell her that he feels the same.

"Fine." Was all that left her lips as she slipped out of the bed and padded across the floor. "I'll tell your parents that you're finally up."

With that, Evelyn walked away, leaving George to sulk or whatever else that boy does in his lonesome. She will not entertain him today.

George did not make a move to stop her as she quietly left him. He did not even call after her so that he could help calm the riot in her head. No, he listened as she walked away.

It hurt him, but he needs his space. Things are becoming complicated and George knows it's only because he himself complicates said things. He always does.

George didn't know if it was because he was afraid or just wanting to take things slow, but he received his answer when he turned on his stomach and Evelyn's spot felt cold. She was only there for a moment and her heat left as soon as she did.

Acknowledging this caused George to cringe. He really is turning into a sap. A sap that needs a girl like Evelyn in his life to stay sane or in this case, warm.

George smiled at the scene before him. His mother, father, and Evelyn were bunched together laughing at something in the living room. Evelyn was perched in the middle holding something in her hands while his mother and father pointed and nodded before the trio spoke incoherently amongst each other.

George swore he heard a fourth voice as he padded silently into the room, fully revealing himself to his distracted family. He definitely wanted to know when his parents became so cozy with Evelyn and why they were having fun without him and especially who that other voice was.

"Where is the little drama queen?" A muffled voice came from the item in Evelyn's hand.

George slipped behind Evelyn just in time to look over her shoulder and catch his elder sister, Megan laughing at his expense.

"Right here you ass wipe." George teased.

Evelyn jumped in her spot while his mother hissed at him for his foul language and his father chuckled at his children's usual banter.

"I can't wait until you get to New York so I can practice my kickboxing moves on you." Megan joked.

George rolled his eyes and swatted in the air.

"You won't do nothing, hernanita."

It was Megan's turn to roll her eyes and flick off her little brother. She truly misses him and was happy to hear that he returned and with a girl. She liked his last girlfriend, Maria, but she absolutely adores this Evelyn character. Evelyn reminds Megan of herself and she knows George needs that.

The two hit it off right away when her parents introduced her. She even promised to mentor Evelyn through the law world as she is studying to become a lawyer as well. The two definitely sealed their bond after that.

"You two better comportarse, behave." Mrs. Mills warned the siblings.

The siblings laughed and promised to behave before the conversation shifted to lighter matters. One of them being George's new relationship with Evelyn.

"I can't believe you kept her hidden for so long, Flynn." Megan tsked. "Then again, I am sure you scared her off with your ignorance. Poor girl,  stuck with the likes of you." She continued erupting into a fit of laughter when George showcased his middle finger to her.

Evelyn, on the other hand, did not find Megan's joke funny. Sure it was harmless and definitely innocent, but it reeled her back to her moment with George an hour ago.

George is fairly good at hiding things, especially his feelings. He holds his emotions in and pushes people away. For his sister to pretty much romanticize his ability to be so cold did something to Evelyn.

Evelyn could be over analyzing the situation, but she cannot help that it does not sit right with her. No matter how she looks at it.

George has deeply rooted issues that a hug and kiss from his family cannot fix. These same issues are now starting to infiltrate on their relationship.

It frustates Evelyn. She wishes she knew the issue. She wishes she knew what the setback is. She wishes George would be open with her.

They are not in high-school, nor are they, naive little kids, they are young adults in a real relationship with real problems. Evelyn simply wants to agree to a real solution.

"You okay, Ev?" His voice was close but the butterflies were distance.

Evelyn's mood has officially turned sour and although she hates to be that person after such a dramatic evening yesterday, she cannot find the will to fake happiness right now. Her frustration has won and will remain the winner if nothing is resolved.

Therefore, instead of plastering a fake smile for the benefit of George and his family, Evelyn decided to do something that George himself refuses to; be open and honest.

"No. I'm not okay." She exhaled as she turned her body in George's direction. "I'm actually pretty agitated right now."

The Mills' exchanged glances and Megan even silenced herself to catch what was going on. George was the only Mills to actually react. His bushy eyebrows stitched together in confusion while his eyes searched Evelyn's for a comedic relief.

George doesn't think Evelyn could possibly be serious. She wouldn't start an argument with him in front of his parents, especially at a time to celebrate the removal of a years old dark cloud. She would not ruin their moment.

George was wrong.

He was so wrong.
