Chapter Ten: Studying
George skimmed over the requirements for his analysis paper. He scrunched his face at the redundant directions. It was for his second humanities class. He didn't understand what an analysis on "Why humans should watch what they eat?", had to do with Humanities. George thought the assignment was fucking stupid. Yet, he was on his second page of four for this stupid ass analysis.
In an hour he will meet with Miss Asshole - Evelyn's new nickname as of late - for a study session. They will be going to the library, as they have done for the past week, and get ahead on the reading material for their Organic Chemistry class.
George has been doing well with his studies with Evelyn. Since he received his failed readiness quiz - scoring a twenty out one hundred - George knew he had to crack down on his studies. His next test for Organic Chemistry is next week and he was nervous as hell. Whatever he learned with Evelyn would be put to the test to see if either he isn't working or she wasn't teaching correctly.
George sighed aloud and tried to focus. He sat on the floor of the history aisle, trying to keep his eyes on his laptop. He had finally made it to the third page and was trying not to type anything redundant.
George wanted to bullshit the last two pages, he didn't understand how many ways could he say that eating a damn bag of Cheetos for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was bad compared to just eating one bag for lunch- or dinner. It was common fucking knowledge.
Nevertheless, George continued on with the annoying paper and before he knew it, he was finished with fifteen minutes to proofread his analysis and print it before Evelyn arrived.
George learned a great lesson last week from Evelyn. He learned that punctuality earned you brownie points and tardiness earns you a whole two hours of studying without a Hershey tutor.
George had been tardy last Thursday due to a reasonable excuse, this time. After his last class, he spoke with his Mathematical Methods instructor. He had gotten lost on one of the theories that were taught in class that day. His professor was quite winded with his explanations and even gave George a prolonged example of the theories he explained.
George was happy to have done the right thing when confused, but when he happily skipped like a bitch to tell Evelyn about his studious efforts, he was met by two strangers obviously studying for a class and they were obviously not Evelyn.
This worried George at the time and he ran around the entire library even the outside perimeter, looking for the Hershey girl with the beautiful fucking legs. He never found her. He was scolded by resource officers for "disturbing the peace", but George didn't give a flying fuck.
Evelyn had left him and he was livid. He stormed back into the library and found himself a private section and tried to use Evelyn's study methods she showed him the previous day. It didn't work and George returned to his apartment still livid, hungry, and exhausted from running. Never again.
George could chuckle at the memory now because he obviously couldn't then. He laughed because this five-foot-five living and breathing Hershey bar can have him scared shitless to not show up to a certain place at a certain time. He laughed because no matter how many times the Hershey bar threatened to kick his ass, he did exactly what she said.
George feels like he is in some kind of boot camp and Evelyn is the sergeant general. In a way, Evelyn is. She's helping George improve his study habits and even teaching him how to restore his confidence. George knows he is a working progress and understands that Evelyn is not a miracle worker, but he sincerely does appreciate her efforts.
George retrieves the warm sheets from the printer. He is proud of himself. He has always had the time management skill down packed, but he oftentimes found himself falling off. George knows that if he doesn't want a repeat of last semester, he cannot afford to make any mistakes. No matter how big or small. He had to be perfect.
At least that is what his parents expect. George cannot be the fuckup he has been since his summer semester. He cannot live up to the Mills Godly name by maintaining his old habits. He has to be perfect.
George sighs at the thought. He hates putting so much pressure on himself, but he owes it to his family. After the stunt he pulled weeks ago, going on a verbal rampage, he knows the only way to make amends is to cave in. If his parents want him to be perfect, then George will replicate the word to the tee.
George returns to his spot to gather his belongings. He has to go to a private study area with Evelyn today. Evelyn has expressed her annoyance for George to be in open spaces studying. Apparently, George's attention span is short when the campuses Golden Gems are around. George's eyes would roam from his textbook to the pretty girls who sat tables in front of he and Evelyn.
Evelyn cannot have that again, she warned George. George wanted to protest, but then again, he liked the idea of being alone in a small room with Miss Asshole. Therefore, he happily obliges to her request.
"One minute any slower and you would've been late." Evelyn greets George.
Evelyn had been in the private study for fifteen minutes. She herself was early because, although she is here to help George, she needed to help herself as well. She had one English left before she could be completely done with the subject in general. She loved English, but her professors back to back papers were going to be the death of her.
George smiles his infamous boyish grin as he slipped into the study room. He didn't mind that Evelyn always greeted him bitterly, it is habitual at this point. He also loved knowing that he can get a rise out of her without even trying.
"Sorry, I was printing stuff out." He held up the papers for proof.
Evelyn glances at the papers and simply nodded. She believed him. Besides she really needed a study partner for their upcoming Organic Chemistry quiz and her helping George is actually helping her ten fold.
"That's fine. Crack open your book and let's get to work."
George nods and places the textbook on the table. He was growing more and more familiar with its contents and it made him smile. He was slowly but surely walking away from the fuckup he once was. It is refreshing for George and he has Evelyn to thank.
The two set to work quickly. They talked about the important classes of biomolecules and important organic reactions including acid-base, substitution, elimination, and carbonyl addition.
Evelyn made flash cards the night prior and readily tested George during each of their lesson review breaks. George messed up and mixed up a few words - which he would curse himself and promise to redeem himself later - but Evelyn was nonetheless proud of his progression.
After seeing his readiness quiz when George coughed up the courage to show her, Evelyn realized that this poor guy really needed her. Since then, Evelyn has made sure to come equipped with her best for George. She will see how well she has been working with him next week.
For two hours the two went on and on about the different subtopics for next weeks test and George was very attentive throughout the entire session. Evelyn thought to appreciate it, but she knew he was dozing off a few times as well. She had caught him from time to time with his eyes fluttering closed and mouth ajar.
Evelyn didn't say anything because she thought that the sight was kind of cute. His plump pink lips held back the saliva building in his mouth. His thick long lashes laid perfectly still on his cheeks and his pale skin blushed at the thought of sleep. George is cute when he's not shamelessly flirting with Evelyn or stressing himself out.
Nonetheless, Evelyn understood George's stress and exhaustion. She too was tired and still had other classes to study for.
"Okay, that's all for today," Evelyn announce purposely slamming the textbook closed.
George jumps in his chair and looks around frantically before calm down once he noticed he was still with Evelyn. He hadn't meant to fall asleep, but George was so fucking exhausted from trying to finish last night's homework for his Mathematical Methods class. George loves numbers, but they were going to be his death. That and this damn Organic Chemistry.
"Shit... I'm sorry, Ev. Didn't mean to dose off." George stretches his arms to the ceiling. "Fuck that nap was good, though."
Evelyn shakes her head at George. Sometimes she believes that they are one in the same. Sometimes. Other times, she feels like she is dealing with a mystery here. When she has these thoughts, she reminds herself of her sole purpose with him, help him pass Organic Chemistry. That's when the thoughts stop
"Why you lookin' like that?" George asks the obviously dazed Evelyn.
Evelyn shakes her head and turns to gather her belongings.
"Nothin'." Is all she gives away.
George hadn't even paid attention to her response. He was too busy appreciating her little ass in the tights she is sporting. God, damn she didn't understand how beautiful she is.
George had noticed earlier that her acne was clearing and it was doing wonders to bring out her milk chocolate complexion. Her kinky hair is in a low puff today and it only enhanced her features.
In George's opinion, Evelyn was too unconventionally beautiful for her own good. He was glad she knew this but did she really know? George likes to think that he could show her. Not in that way, but he could in that way too.
"You got a boyfriend, Ev?" George asked once Evelyn turned around.
Evelyn rolls her eyes and readjusts her backpack on her shoulders. George is back to his annoying self. So she ignored him and scooted her chair into the table before turning toward the door.
George hops from his chair and throws his textbook into his backpack, rushing after Evelyn. She hadn't made it far out of the library before George tugged at her wrist and halted her in her haste.
"Hold on Evelyn, damn." George huffs, releasing Evelyn's wrist when she turned to him.
"What?" She demands, rolling her eyes at the grin that spreads across George's lips.
Damn he really loves her attitude.
"Let me treat you to early dinner. I've been told I cook mean Chicken, Alfredo." George offers all traces of humor replaced by the seriousness of his proposal.
George knows his proposal is taking a long shot and he is probably crossing the boundaries that were never officially set between them. He knows Evelyn will cuss him out in the way she does and tell him a lovely "hell no" before walking off. He still felt that the chance was worth taking. At least he'd be able to see that nice ass of hers walk away as she dismissed him.
"I'm hungry, let's go." Evelyn shrugged casually.
The look on George's face elicited laughter from Evelyn. She is hungry, very hungry in fact. It may not be her smartest choice to follow George home, but something was telling her that she would be safe. Besides, she'd kick his ass if he tried anything.
"Well, okay." George finally cleared his throat, still stomped by his disbelief. "Let's go."
He retrieves his keys from his back pocket and twirls them on his index finger. He earned another eye roll from Evelyn, but that little motion did nothing to put a dent in his elation. Evelyn was about to step onto George's territory.
