Chapter Sixteen: Arguments

"I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, begging him to love me." Evelyn recites as she takes another sip of her water.

Evelyn's morning classes were canceled today. It is rare that college professors at this university cancel classes - because of some unforeseen reason - so this took Evelyn by surprise when not one, but both of her classes were simultaneously canceled.

She did not want to go to class in the beginning and was happy that she escaped Organic Chemistry and College Algebra today. It truly is a blessing from God.

Evelyn was happy about her luck but honestly did not know what to do with it. Deja still had class and she did not feel like being bothered with anyone else, therefore she opted for an original classic Julia Roberts movie and quiet time in her dorm room. Evelyn was not complaining.

That is until her cellphone flashed it's annoying LED notification light and the word "Asshole" was bolded on the screen. She knew who was calling and that alone made her hesitantly reach for the cell phone.

Evelyn is no punk, but she felt weird for looking at the guy the way she did a few weeks ago. She has successfully avoided the topic since then, but she is no fool to his longing for answers. Evelyn just simply didn't have any at the moment.

She still does not have an answer currently either.

"What?" She dryly answers.

"Damn can I get a hello... Good morning? You're so damn mean." He greets with light chuckles.

Evelyn definitely did not have butterflies, but her lips did voluntarily turn up into a smile at his usual banter.

"What do you want?" She reiterates.

"It's like that, huh? Fine, I just want to talk. Can I come pick you up?"

Evelyn glanced at Julia Roberts kissing the man of her dreams finally and rolls her eyes in envy. Evelyn certainly does not have a "man of her dreams", but she has her eyes on a certain asshole with an amazing body and gorgeous eyes.

"I'm watching movies, no." She rejects him despite her little moment.

"I knew you would say that. Tell your RA to let me in." He sighs in annoyance.

Evelyn shoots up from her bed and hops down. She glances at the cellphone as if it would explain why the damn boy was currently waiting for her in the lobby of her dorm.

She did not know when she took the first step, but suddenly Evelyn was in the lobby, peering from the elevators at the boy with the amazing body and gorgeous eyes.

He looked absolutely peeved. His full lips are pouty and his eyebrows are crinkled. Evelyn swore she saw his jaw tick when her RA pointed toward a nearby exit sign.

Evelyn had to admit that besides his terrible attitude and scrunched up face, he looked cute today. He is sporting midnight joggers, gray Vans and a charcoal wool hoodie. Basic, yes, but nonetheless cute.

Evelyn sighs as she continued to watch the RA fuss at the boy and the boy return with a much greater attitude and tried not to laugh. She definitely needed to put the two out of their misery, but she could not find her footing to move.

That is until the boy pointed her way and his face if even remotely possible, twisted more at the source of his agitation. Was Evelyn seriously watching him argue with her RA and was not going to come and defend him? That is cruel.

Evelyn lowered her eyes. She had been busy spying and now had no choice but to free the boy. Even her RA was glancing at her sideways as she finally approached the two.

Without much of a word or a smile, she nodded to her RA and grabbed the boy's hand and lead them away. It wasn't until they were on the elevator alone that the boy finally spoke up.

"You call me an asshole, but you literally watched me argue with your RA and wasn't going to say shit." He mumbles. "If I'm not mistaken, only an asshole would do that."

Evelyn rolls her eyes and watches for the ruby two to become an emerald three before stealing a glance from the boy.

"Takes one to know one, George." She quips, stepping off the elevator.

George groans and follows after Evelyn, he was irritated for today and definitely is not up to arguing with this girl. He is so angry that he has yet to look at her amazing legs and ass in the thermal tights she is wearing.

No, he was too focused on how nonchalant she has been acting for the past few weeks.

"I didn't come here to argue." He begins stepping into the neat dorm room. " I just want to talk."

Evelyn sighs and hops onto her bed. The dorm room is small and her feeling of claustrophobia is eminent. George is respecting her space by simply opting for the desk chair adjacent to her bed, but even that is too close for her.

"Talk then." Evelyn's voice is strong and even, despite her inward discomfort.

George nods and reaches for the pencil in Evelyn's supply basket.

"I know you like me." He twists the pencil between his fingers. "Don't deny it or you'll piss me off. Just know that I know."

Evelyn furrows her eyebrows and looks to George emotionlessly. The guy swears he has everything figured out. Even if she does like him - hypothetically speaking here - she would never act on those hypothetical feelings. George is not what she needs and vice versa.

"Okay..." She feigns boredom.

George chuckles and returns the pencil to the basket.

"So you're not denying it, but you're denying me?" He accuses.

"Never said that."

"But you are. Evelyn this is not some fifty shades of drama, this is real life. I am a real boy with real feelings for a real girl. I kind of want a real answer." George emphasizes.

Evelyn shifts on her bed and swings her feet aimlessly. George had a point, but she does not know if he truly understands. They know the bare minimum about each other.

Evelyn truly believes in being friends with a guy before jumping into a relationship. She and George are a long shot from being friends. She is his tutor. That is all. He is going about this the wrong way. This is not the way it works.

"Well enlighten me then!" George stood from the chair.

Evelyn didn't know she was mumbling to herself incoherently, but George had caught her last sentence. He didn't know what she meant by "this is not the way it works", but it made his blood boil. She is being difficult and it is driving him nuts. The twisted thing about it is that he kind of likes it.

Evelyn did not mean to voice her contradicting thoughts, but she was not going to take them back either. She meant what she said and said what she meant. This truly isn't how stuff works.

"You don't just get to tell me I like you and then--"

"No... I told you that I know you like me. There's a difference. " George corrects. "Continue."

Evelyn rolls her eyes. George is working her last nerves. She is trying to think and his asshole-ness is throwing her off.

"I don't know what you want from me, but it's not going to happen." She finally simplifies.

George smiles and nods.

"But it is. You want a fairytale, some Pretty Woman type shit and I don't know about that. This is the twenty-first century, Ev." George's smile falls. "When you like a person, you go after them. This isn't a movie with character development! There is no plot! You either like me or you don't!" He was growing heated with every statement.

"I do, but I'm not about to go in with someone with a nasty ass attitude like yours. You're an asshole with no boundaries. The shit is not cute!" Evelyn retorts hopping from her bed.

George steps up to her in one short stride. She wanted to be big and bold and he was going to show her how hard she'd fall trying.

"It's funny because you have a nasty attitude and I eat that shit up. I really fucking do." He leans down toward her ear. "I like it when you get riled up, Ev. The shit is a turn on." He whispers, making sure his lips brushed against her earlobe.

Evelyn shoves him backward. She doesn't know what George thinks he is doing, but it does not work that way. They will talk and listen, not do whatever it is George is trying to do.

"See what a mean? You're lusting and that shit is annoying. I'm not that type of girl. I'm offended that you even thought that shit would work on me." Evelyn grouses crossing her arms over her chest.

George had to really bite down on his bottom lip to stop himself from laughing. He didn't know what was funnier the fact that she's trying so hard to deny him or the fact that she was trying so hard to defy him. He'd go with the safe answer and say, both.

"You didn't let me finish, that's why." George takes a step forward. "I like you, you're a little rough around the edges and a contradiction and I like shit like that. I like you. All in saying is give me a chance. I'll do whatever you want--"

"That's not how this works, George! You--"

"Evelyn, you got one more time to yell at me about that bull shit you are forcing yourself to eat. We like each other and that's all we need to know. Let's work from there. Okay?" George sighs.

He did not have a plan when he entered the dorm and definitely didn't have a plan when he was arguing with Evelyn's RA, but when Evelyn never denied her feelings, George had finally devised a plan.

He obviously had to prove smart-mouth wrong and show her a side of him that had been sitting on a dusty shelf for almost a year now. He was going to get Evelyn one way or another.
