Chapter Five: House Party
Evelyn didn't know why she was searching through clothing racks for something cute and casual. Actually, she did. The reason was gawking over herself in a full sized mirror that made her five-foot-two frame seem longer than usual. The short dress the beautiful Latina wore may have helped as well.
The two best friends are preparing for a party. Although, parties are not Evelyn's forte whatsoever. She finds them to be boring and a waste of space. People breathing down each other necks, doing the cynical beneath the light of the moon? Evelyn would usually pass.
Unfortunately for her, she has a terribly persuasive Latina best friend who would not rest until she got a yes out of poor Evelyn. Evelyn shouldn't be so weak, but she really missed her best friend and hasn't been to a college party since her semester started. She might as well take this one night to be a little out of the ordinary in the name of fun.
"Ooh, I think this is the one for you, Ev!" Kimberly squeals turning to her best friend.
Evelyn turns away from the clothing rack and looks at the skimpy material in her best friends hand.
"No." She said without second thought.
Kimberly knows Evelyn better than that. When has she ever seen Evelyn walk out of the house with a swoop neck romper? They are a little outside of Washington, but the cold spell is still in the air. She will not sacrifice her comfort to look cute for some boys with greedy eyes. Hell no.
"Come on, Ev! Live a little." Kimberly whines.
She doesn't know why her best friend always refuses outfits like this. She has a body for it. She's a little more on the athletic build side, but put Evelyn in the right clothes and she is sight for sore eyes. Evelyn just needs to embrace that.
"I won't if I wear that shit. Kim, I am not trying to freeze to death to make you happy." Evelyn dismisses, spotting a cute little number on another rack.
While Kimberly sulked at her obvious defeat, Evelyn sashayed toward the rack and fished for the top that caught her eye. It wasn't a top, but a nude over sized sweater. She loved oversized sweaters. Is it a regular top? Is it a dress? You don't know, but it's too damn cute to give up.
The sweater is nude, loosely knitted so that it could be easily seen through. If Evelyn threw on a cami underneath the beauty, she would be set to go.
"Will you at least wear tights? You have an ass, set it free." Kimberly appeared adjacent to Evelyn.
Evelyn didn't jump in surprise or anything of the sort, she heard Kimberly smacking her gum before she even felt her coming.
"I can manage that. I got a scarf for this bad boy." Evelyn nearly squeals.
She's a conservative girl. She does not believe that just because God was generous with her biological gifts these gifts should be shared with the world. She wasn't close to a nun neither, but she loved leaving a mystery about her.
Yeah she was known to be goofy, loud, and a minor gym enthusiast, but that was mainly all. She is one of those girls people just gravitate toward and most of that gravitation is positive.
That is also how she met her boyfriend. She was different, a good girl with bad girl tendencies. She loves having fun but can cut someone to pieces wth her tongue. Yeah, Evelyn Williams is something else.
"Earth to, Ev..." Kimberly sighs, shoving Evelyn's shoulder lightly.
The girls had long paid for their items and were currently grabbing a bite to eat. Apparently, throughout the process, Evelyn had dazed off a few times. Kimberly was beginning to become annoyed.
Evelyn flutters her eyes and looks to her best friend with an apologetic smile.
"A lot on my mind." She simplifies.
Kimberly nods and places her hand on Evelyn.
"Well, my abuela told me when you have a lot on your mind you're either loco, or in need of dinero." Kimberly shrugs. "My abuela may or may not have been a bit of a lunática." She says as an afterthought.
Evelyn glances at her best friend in confusion. One would think after years of friendship that Evelyn would have picked up on Kimberly's language, but for the life of her she couldn't. There are too many words to conjugate and there's a proper noun for this and that, English was bad enough so Spanish was out of the question.
On the other hand, she does enjoy listening to Kimberly speak on occasion in her native tongue. It's actually very beautiful in Evelyn's opinion, especially when Kimberly quotes her beloved grandmother.
Kim's grandmother is her world as she nearly raised Kim alongside her parents. She is a wise elderly woman and Evelyn always enjoy her visits with her.
"My Abuela always talks about money and I think sometimes she's crazy for that." Kimberly translates.
Evelyn just shrugs and finishes the rest of her chicken salad sandwich, she just can't wait for tonight.
The party inside could be heard clearly from the outside. This didn't bother Evelyn as much as she thought it would. What did bother her to the core was seeing a girl and guy in the middle of sucking each other throats.
Evelyn was sure the two couldn't have known each other. She recognized the girl from her English class. That girl was supposedly pure as they came. Her campaign of innocence has surely come to an end tonight.
Evelyn tried not to be so aware of other couples just like that as Kimberly dragged her into the house and through the already dancing bodies of people. The party started at ten-thirty it's only eleven and already the party is in full swing.
Evelyn was actually relieved when she noticed that there weren't any smells of illegal greens surrounding her and the punch looked innocent enough to drink, although she wouldn't even dare. She knows how the spiking thing works.
"The guy that owns this place just moved in here, today!" Kimberly yells over the music.
Evelyn turned to her friend and shrugged. She didn't know what to say to that. She actually believes it's college kid ritual to "break in a new place". She wouldn't do it if and when she gets her own place, but she isn't unfamiliar with the idea.
The party jumped on as the best friends tried to find their place. Kimberly didn't want to leave Evelyn alone and it was likewise for Evelyn. The two didn't know what to do, but they knew they came for one reason. So with a loud cheer for a hopefully goodnight from Kimberly, she turned loose of her best friend and drove head first into the crowd.
Evelyn laughed at her best friends eagerness. The apartment was capacious, but not to the point where she couldn't easily spot her best friend shaking herself wildly. The girl truly lost herself to music.
After a moment of watching her best friend fish for a dance partner and lure him in with her rhythmic hips, Evelyn gave up on watching that show and sauntered into what she could make out as a kitchen.
The kitchen was slightly closed off into a corner but the high breakfast bar with three barstools made the corner seem like much less of a corner and more of a section. The place, from what Evelyn could see, is nice.
Everything seems simple and modern. She liked it. The cool colors she could make out were black and grey. The colors were gender clichè, but befitting nonetheless. The owner has great taste.
"There's always that one person watching the party instead of enjoying the party." An unfamiliar baritone joins her.
Evelyn rolls her eyes and scans the barely visible kitchen.
"Silent treatment? Clichè. Nice one." The baritone continues.
Evelyn promised Kimberly prior to leaving Kim's house that she would be on her best behavior. Kimberly knows how terrible Evelyn's attitude can be and also knows that she can easily ruin a good time with said attitude. Evelyn also knows this and made a sisterly promise to behave.
But this prick. This guy that invited himself to sit next to her is already working her nerves from one sentence. Evelyn is already finding it hard to digress, she isn't good with the party scene as is and is most certainly not up for the stereotypical creep that tries to woo gullible girls. She is not having it.
"Walk away now. This is the only thing I will say before I kick your--" Evelyn pauses to exhale an easy breath. "Leave me alone."
The baritone chuckles, unfazed by Evelyn's chihuahua like attitude.
"Look, this is my home and I just want to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves." The baritone sighs. "I'm sorry."
Evelyn can hear Kimberly fussing at her in two languages, forcing her to apologize to the stranger as well. He is the host after all. Besides, he did sincerely apologize even though it is Evelyn who should be doing the apologizing. She gave the poor guy attitude and almost threatened to kick his ass just for greeting her.
Evelyn sighs heavily as the stranger made a move to leave.
"I'm sorry, for being a bitch for no reason." She says resembling a child that was forced into an apology.
The stranger chuckles and relaxes in his spot.
"I wouldn't call you a bitch, but you have quite a bite." He tries to lighten the mood.
Evelyn shrugs and glances at the kitchen again. Although she can only see what the disco light provides, she still inwardly gawks at the simplistic beauty of it all.
"Your place is nice." She changes the subject.
"Thank you. Just moved in and I'm sure it won't look so nice tomorrow." He chuckles. "What's your name?"
Evelyn glances at the shadowy figure only catching the light of the strangers eyes. She tried to guess the color for a moment.
Were they green? Were they hazel? Whichever color they were gorgeous. She looked away after the light quickly ran with her guesses.
She contemplated telling him her name.
"Evelyn." She finally says.
The stranger nods and turns his body towards hers to extend his hand.
"George." He says.
Evelyn didn't need the light to see that he was smiling. For what she could tell, he had a nice one.
"What a basic ass name." She chuckles, unable to control the verbal vomit.
George bursts into laughter as well, licking his lips under the lights. Evelyn caught the action and noted how plump and pink his lips are.
"Well, I am a basic ass guy. I threw a basic ass party in my new nice ass apartment." He jokes, eliciting an even louder laugh from Evelyn.
She likes people with a sense of humor. This party doesn't seem so bad after all.
"Well, you said it. I didn't." Evelyn teased.
George shakes his head at the girl, taking a chance when the light hits her to check her out. He couldn't make out much, but he does like her smile and he isn't much into diverse girls, but he had to say his eyes aren't the only thing appreciating the girl named Evelyn in front of him.
"Are you done?" Evelyn's voice had turned lethal.
She had watched as the humorous host named George checked her out like she was something on the meat aisle. He may have not been trying, but she caught him licking his lips in satisfactory of his view. Evelyn should have known that the easy conversation was only a ploy for him to keep her around longer. But Evelyn is not a show for anyone.
On that note, Evelyn didn't wait for George to answer her. She had already jumped down from the bar stool and made her way to what is now the dance floor. She scanned the area for her best friend and groaned aloud when she didn't spot the beautiful Latina.
This was just her luck. All Evelyn wants to do is return to Kimberly's house and have a movie marathon, with kettle corn and cocoa. Anything but be here.
A hand wraps around Evelyn's wrist causing her to whip her head rather violently to see the person who obviously has no desire to live anymore.
For some reason she was expecting Kimberly to be the one she catches, smiling about the cute guy she danced with. She was hoping it was Kimberly telling her she was ready to leave as the party had gotten boring.
She didn't see Kimberly though, she saw George with an uneasy smile on his face. He saw how quickly Evelyn's head had spun when he touched her. He inwardly prayed she wouldn't slap him because she seemed like the type to carry a mean hand.
The two stared each other down. One praying for his life to be spared, the other wondering why the asshole has yet to release her wrist.
"I just came to apologize." George is the first to break the silence.
Evelyn rolls her eye and jerks her wrist away.
"You've already done that." She snarls.
George nods as he totally deserved that one. He wants to make things right with the feisty girl with the nice legs. He, once again, checked Evelyn out as she walked away. He could barely make out her figure, but once the lights flashed on her midnight tights, he knew he had to rectify the situation.
"Shit..." He sighs. "You're right, I'm an asshole. But, can you forgive an asshole for appreciating you?" He offers.
Evelyn looked at the boy as if he grew two heads. She was not the type of girl that felt as if she lacked so much confidence that she needed a guy to assure her. She also wasn't rude enough to disregard that George is in fact part of the male species and obviously can't handle his mannish ways.
Evelyn was stuck between just blowing him off or allowing him to suffer a bit more. She chose the latter.
"Does it look like I need to be appreciated?" She throws attitude.
George resisted the urge to inspect her again.
"Hell yeah. I mean... Not if you don't want to be inspected. Look, I'm trying to be very blunt with this and not sound like an asshole--"
"But you do sound like an asshole." Evelyn quips.
George chuckles. He likes a girl with an attitude. Those are the best ones to chase. So he figured he will just keep playing her little game and see where it goes.
"You know--"
"I don't know. You wanted to apologize, you did. It was half-assed, but I will accept it. There." Evelyn dismissed him, moving to walk away.
George clasped her wrist again.
"Look you asshole--"
"Put away your claws, woman. Damn." George sighs. "I just wanted to ask if you wanted to dance?"
Again, George must have grown two heads because Evelyn was looking at him crazily, again. Who is this guy? Why does he keep pestering her? No still means no, right?
Evelyn opens her mouth to give him a snarky remark but is silenced when George simply drags her deeper into the crowd. Evelyn tried not to feel claustrophobic in the mist of the gyrating bodies, but it was becoming way too hot for her comfort.
George didn't seem to mind, though, he just wanted to see what the girl with all the answers would do if put on the spot. He half expects her to slap him and walk away, but he hopes she would just go with the flow and dance with him.
"I wish you would stop touching me." Evelyn grits, trying to find his face in the darkness.
George chuckles and releases Evelyn's wrist to squeeze behind her. He didn't mean to press against her as much as he did, but neither was he complaining when he did.
Evelyn on the other hand did mind.
Who does this guy thinks he is? Just because he is the host he can chose a special girl to harass? Is Evelyn even considered special?
"Relax, Evelyn. Just dance with me." His cool breath silenced Evelyn's thoughts.
Evelyn doesn't like spaces like this, with people like him, but when she swears she heard Kimberly's voice, telling her to let go, Evelyn did just that.
She swayed to the ethnic beat, classifying it as a reggae mix. It crossed her mind to ask what kind of person like George listens to reggae. She herself isn't much of a fan of it, but in this moment, when her hips swayed to the island beats, she lost herself.
George easily kept up with her. He was a little coordinated from high-school sports and gym sessions with Justin and his other buddies. He came fully prepared to finally show off his smooth moves.
He was happy that the girl with the know-it-all attitude had finally released her dragon in order to enjoy herself.
