A Plus One?
Bakugo had just gotten to the agency when he noticed a bunch of reporters hovering over the receptionist's desk. The noise was jarring and the scene became a traffic jam for interns and sidekicks trying to get their morning assignments. Sauntering over, he didn't expect much. I mean, why would the receptionist have a crowd? It is true that their new receptionist was very pretty and soft spoken, they wanted someone they knew wouldn't be rude to their guests. However, Bakugo also knew that she did not like to be crowded like this. He bulldozed his way to the front, seeing the poor girl scrambling to cover a box.
"Suki, what the hell is going on with these extras?" Bakugo shouted as more reporters snapped photos. Suki looked up at him with a tired smile, trying her best to put on a brave face.
"Mr. Dynamight, this box arrived this morning from America. It's from Mr. Kaminari, so all these guys think it's something to do with his music. I'm trying to cover his address, all these cameras are bound to get an angle. I don't want Mr. Kaminari to find himself in such trouble when stalkers show up to his house," Bakugo growled as a photographer nearly shoved him and made a dive for the box. Bakugo, at that point, had enough. He let off a string of small explosions and got in front of Suki.
"All of you extras get off this property! You're clogging up my agency!" His booming voice got all their attention and each reporter scrambled away. Some photographers tried to get some more photos, but Bakugo picked up the box over his head to make sure no one saw the address. After seeing the rest of the photographers give up, he gave Suki a curt nod and went to the elevator. He stared down at the box as the elevator passed every floor, he couldn't help but wonder what was in the box.
He and Denki had only been chatting once a month or so since Denki started wedding planning. Last he heard, Denki had chosen a nice suit. So, getting a package like this made him worried. He gently shook it, noting the contents were rather loose inside. He quirked his brow as he gave a sturdy bump, listening as the contents seemed to ripple upwards then downwards. So, whatever was in the box was stacked. Was it paper? The elevator door opened and everybody was in the conference room, ready for the monthly staff meeting. When Bakugo entered, each person looked immediately at the box.
"Kacchan, where did you get the box from?" Midoriya asked as he straightened his papers. Bakugo sneered and gently placed the box on the conference table.
"Poor Suki was being mobbed by reporters because of this damn thing. It's from Denki," At that, everybody perked up. Not many of them had kept in close contact with Denki since his wedding planning started. Ochako clapped her hands, very excited.
"Oh! Can we open it now?!" she asked giddily. Midoriya looked at Shoto and Bakugo, who each shrugged. Not having any opposition to the idea, Midoriya nodded at Ochako. The heroes each waited patiently for Bakugo to open the box, breaking the packing seal and opening the flaps. There were many individual letters, and Bakugo handed each letter out with the implied agreement to wait until everyone got theirs. By the time Bakugo passed out all the envelopes, everyone but Kirishima had one.
"Are you all ready to open your envelopes?" Shoto questioned, getting a unanimous 'yes' from everybody. They each tore open their letters to find a beautiful invitation to Denki's wedding, along with meal slips and a personal rsvp letter with a matching envelope. Everybody squealed in excitement, even Tokoyami was jumping like a schoolgirl. Kirishima sighed and put his chin on his fist, not complaining but showing his discomfort about the whole situation.
The invitation was a beautiful pine green, with gold lettering. As was the RSVP form and menu slip.
Midoriya decided to read the invitation aloud.
"'You are hereby invited to the wedding of Chase Doodle and Denki Kaminari! Please save the date, October 12th XXXX! Located in the gorgeous Redwood National Park, California, we are excited for you to be a part of one of the greatest parties of the century! Join us in a spacious grove of elegance and nature as we get married, dance the night away, and gorge our tummies until they explode! For additional information, see your RSVP forms! We hope to hear from you soon! With loving regards from the soon-to-be newlyweds, Denki and Chase!'" he squealed, "that definitely sounds like Denki wrote out the invite!" the group of heroes laughed. Todoroki looked at the RSVP form, holding up his hand to silence everybody. Once it was quiet, he began reading.
"'The dress code is semi-formal! We encourage the use of practical/comfortable shoes, as the terrain is not smooth. However, we do wish for our guests to dress more formally: suits, dresses, pant suits, jumpsuits, etc. We also encourage them to be as brightly colored as possible, with the only two options that are off the table being black, white, and champagne gold (they are the grooms' colors).
The hotel where all guests will be staying is Roosevelt Base Camp, a cozy lodge located five minutes from the main visitor center. We will be renting out your rooms for the day prior to the wedding, the day of, and two days post the wedding! Think of our wedding as a vacation! There will be shuttle buses to take you from the visitor center to the venue, so there is no need to worry about transport! Please call Marley, (xxx)xxx-xxxx, with any additional questions regarding transport.'" Shoto flipped over the page, "'our RSVP list and our meal list is digital, please scan the barcode and select whether you will be in attendance or not! With loving regards, Denki and Chase'". The heroes all immediately scanned their codes, entering their names and checking 'yes'. They each buzzed about the meal list as well, with Shiozake and Koda saying how thoughtful it was for Denki and Chase to have a vegan option.
Bakugo had been by Kirishima's side as he was doing his, when a pop up came onto his screen. The pop up asked if he would be taking a plus one, which made the hero gaze at Kirishima. The redhead had still yet to look at anybody as the conference room was buzzing with excitement. He then looked back at his phone, sighing. He put it back in his pocket, opting to deal with the head ache later. The rest of the meeting was rather uneventful, save for news of a new villain that had been terrorizing the downtown district. Due to the nature of the villain's quirk, he, Midoriya, and Shoto assigned Manga, Shinso, and Koda to the case. After the meeting was dismissed, Bakugo sprinted after Midoriya in hopes of catching him before he went for patrol.
"Hey, Izuku, can we talk for a minute!" Midoriya paused midstep, making Tsu stop as well.
"What's up, Kacchan?" he tilted his head curiously. He only ever called him by his chosen name when stressed. He glanced at Tsu, raising his hand to shoo her away, "I'll meet you in the lobby Tsu," she nodded and went to the elevator. Midoriya wordlessly nodded towards his office, the two stepping in.
"Did you get anything with your RSVP, any pop ups?" Midoriya crossed his arms and shook his head.
"No, not that I saw. I think everybody got the same 'yes or no' page. Why?" Bakugo gruffed and rang his hand through his hair.
"My barcode thing gave me the option of a plus one, I want to know if I should invite shitty hair," He sighed, "I know he was the reason for Denki and Chase's drama, and I don't want to bring him if he's going to be seen as a problem. But, at the same time, he is my boyfriend," he looks to the side, "to be frank, I still haven't fully forgiven him either. But, I know being excluded from Denki's wedding will absolutely crush him," Midoriya thought for a few moments. If Midoriya was being truthful, he didn't want Kirishima there. Denki's scandal set back his progress, and as someone who also suffers with a PTSD of sorts, he resonates highly with Denki. However, he also knows that Bakugo is correct. Kirishima loves Denki, that was the crux of this whole issue. Being excluded from the most important day of Denki's life will probably cause Kirishima to finally break down, and that is a pain he wouldn't wish on his worst enemy. So, he merely nodded before answering curtly.
"You want my honest opinion, Katsuki?" Bakugo's head shot up at the use of his name, "I think there's a reason only you got a plus one page, and it's on you to make that decision," Midoriya waved his hands, "why else would they have your specific invite have a separate option, while simultaneously not giving an invite to Kirishima?" Midoriya turned and began to walk out, "you don't have to answer today, just think about it. If you still don't know, maybe you can seek other opinions," Midoriya then left his office, Bakugo still mulling over what he had just said.
Three days would pass, and he would occasionally think of the invitation and what Midoriya had told him. He had a point, why else would his invite be different? There were too many connecting factors to be a coincidence. This didn't change the fact that he was torn about whether or not to take Kirishima. So, he decided on taking Midoriya's advice on getting other opinions on the matter. The next day, he offered for Mina, Momo, Jiro, Ochako, Ojiro, Aoyama, Shinso, Sero, and Monoma to come over. They all had the day off, so it would've interfered with their schedules. As they all sat in the living room, Bakugo brought out some tea. They each grabbed a cup, ready for whatever Bakugo had on his mind.
"So," Sero started, "is there a reason you called all us here, blasty?" Bakugo sighed once again and sat down in one of the chairs, looking out to his colleagues.
"I'm at a bit of an impasse when regarding Eijiro," Aoyama and Monoma immediately rolled their eyes with a scoff. Aoyama might not have had an active role in Denki's life, even prior to the whole incident. But, he still thought of Denki highly. After finding out Kirishima was the one causing him pain, the view of Kirishima dimmed in his eyes.
"I think I'm surprised that you've stayed with him," he said bitterly, "you two loved Denki, yes? Yet, Kirishima actively tried sabotaging his relationship with a man who truly cared for his well being. That doesn't sound like love to me," Ochako nodded in agreement.
"Aoyama makes a good point, Kirishima knew what he was doing was wrong," Mina held up her hand, telling them to wait.
"Kiri has always had trouble with the more negative emotions. I think he never properly knew how to translate them. Jealousy and spite aren't his thing, so while I know his actions were unforgivable, I think he deserves at least a little forgiveness. He even said he didn't want it to go that far, things just spiraled," Shinso merely sneered, putting down his cup before gesturing to her.
"Weren't you one of Denki's best friends before his accident? Do you not remember his disfigurement caused by how you all treated him? Chase was his support system, and Kirishima purposely tried to take that away in hopes of feeding some selfish want. He actively made a selfish choice!"
"That doesn't mean he has to pay for it for the rest of his life!" Sero argued. Momo got in between the two's line of sight.
"Both of you, calm down!" she turned to Shinso, "while I understand your viewpoint, I also agree that Kirishima losing Bakugo would crush him,"
"Hold on there, ponytail! That isn't what this is about!" Bakugo interrupted. Jiro curled an eyebrow.
"Really? If this isn't about your relationship with Kiri, then what is it?" Bakugo groaned and rubbed his face.
"You all remember when you scanned the barcode or whatever, and got the RSVP message?" they all nodded, "well, mine had a plus one option. And Ei didn't get an invite, which leads me to believe that he may not be wanted. But, at the same time, Denki didn't want to be rude and actively exclude him. So, he left the choice up to me, who is obviously closest to him," he groaned and put his forehead in his palms, "and I'm conflicted on what to do, because I know Denki is doing this to be courteous to Eijiro and may be uncomfortable around him. But, I also know that not going to Denki's wedding, even when all of us go, will destroy Eijiro. I don't want to do that,"
"If I may," Ojiro interrupted Bakugo's rant, "I think Denki has formed a shiny backbone when regarding his social relationships. I mean, 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' was basically him saying Kirishima is a conniving bastard. However, I don't think Denki would have given that plus one option if he was uncomfortable with Kirishima being there. He wants the choice to be yours," Aoyama crossed his arms.
"I still don't think he's earned his spot there,"
"Yeah," Shinso agreed. Monoma also nodded in solidarity.
"Well, then it's a good thing it's not up to you. Kiri has tried his best to deal with the situation," Mina stated.
"Yeah, he's a good guy at heart," Sero added. Ochako rolled her eyes, shrugging.
"This whole situation was his fault, though. There wouldn't have been anything to fix if he hadn't actively caused it," she then looked at Bakugo, "but Ojiro is right. Denki may not be fully comfortable giving Kirishima his own invite, hence your plus one. Monoma sighed and put his cup down, standing up.
"My opinion is in line with Aoyama and Shinso, I don't think Kirishima should go. However, Ochako and Ojiro are right in the fact that it is not my choice to make. You have to do what you think is best," he then went to the entryway, "if that's all, I'll be leaving. The tea was nice Bakugo, I'd like to know the brand," Shinso immediately shot up and followed Monoma, giving a rushed goodbye as he got his shoes on and sprinted out the door. Aoyama also got up, sauntering over and giving a polite goodbye. After that, it was far too awkward, and everybody left one by one while giving polite goodbye.
The next batch of opinions came later that afternoon, when he met up with Shoto, Tsu, Iida, and Tokoyami. Iida and Tsu were out on patrol, but Bakugo was lucky enough to catch them on their break. When he broached the topic again, it was once again a mixed bag of opinions.
"I wouldn't want him there after everything he has done," Shoto stated coldly, "I saw the day I rescued Denki, Chase has this genuine love and concern for Denki's health. All throughout his visit, that genuinity never shifted. What Kirishima did was a break of trust of not only Denki, but everybody else," Tokoyami nodded.
"I agree, while it is ultimately your choice, I cannot ignore Kirishima's actions. My perception of him has gravely changed, no excuses may change my mind. Only time will repair the damage to his reputation. The fact Denki gave you such an option was probably because he felt the need to reconcile," Tsu sighed, relaxing in the booth.
"I think it should be your choice, kero," she then looked at Bakugo, "Kirishima did hurt Denki, but yet he still offered you to extend your invite to include him. He may not wish for Kirishima to be a guest on his own," Iida fixed his glasses, holding his hands on the table.
"While not direct, he knows that any invite Kirishima directly receives could be perceived as a pity invite. Especially since he sent the invitations to the agency, since that was the best place. It's not like we publicly announce our addresses, so the move was probably made for efficiency reasons. And Tsu could also be on the right track. He wanted it to be clear that Kirishima's attendance is wanted so long as you accompany him,"
Bakugo getting so many perspectives actually helped him a great deal. He was very aware that a lot of the heroes were still very wary of Kirishima, after all, he himself was wary as well. But, there was this guilt that ate up Bakugo because of that. Thinking back on all those nights where Kirishima would hold him, comfort him, whisper kind words while rubbing his head and back. Kirishima has always been his rock, his source of grounding. To be wary of the man who has been your biggest source of comfort and safety, it was almost unfathomable. But then, he remembers watching Denki throughout his visit, and his stomach coils with a mixture of understanding and guilt. He saw that lifelessness when he confronted Denki in the dressing room the day he performed for Jiro's birthday party, the fear in his movements, and how Chase brought Denki comfort. Chase was to Denki as Kirishima was to himself. To know Kirishima almost took that away from Denki was disheartening. Then he thought of it as if he was Denki in this situation, if someone who was close tried to take away Kirishima. The feeling of dread was palpable on his tongue, he never could live without Kirishima. So, to imagine Denki feeling that dread hurt his heart.
But then, he remembered all the opinions of reason. How those who weren't outright against Kirishima going to the wedding did make points on both sides. How Kirishima was probably forgiven at least a little bit, since nobody else received a plus one page. How Denki might not have wanted Kirishima there alone, but instead beside him. Could it maybe be that Denki has semi-forgiven Kirishima, or was it Denki trying to spare his and Kirishima's feelings? After tossing and turning for three more nights, he ultimately decides to ask the one person who can sort out all this mess. He goes to his laptop and goes onto his video chat, using Chase's number, he finds his account and calls him. It rings for about two minutes, anxiety clawing at Bakugo's throat when a ping rings out from the speakers of his laptop and Chase pops up. He's in some kind of studio, with headphones on his neck. The other band members are there as well, each setting down their own instruments.
"Hey, Bakugo, what's up?" Chase waved. Bakugo smiled a bit, Chase seemed to always have some shiny disposition. In a way, Denki found a perfect match, "hold on, I'll put you on the widescreen. The others and I are working on a wedding present for Denki, so we're all here but him," Chase went off screen for a bit, then the video cut and suddenly Bakugo could see the whole studio with Chase bent behind some sofa with a bulky black wire. When Chase popped his head back up, he quickly wiped off a dust bunny that had clung to his hair, "so, what's up?" Bakugo felt his throat tighten when he saw how the other bandmates looked at him. It was as if they were ready to judge him.
"Uh, nothing against your bandmates, but this is really just between Chase and I. You guys can come in after," Chase looked back to his mates. Pearson and Ariel shrugged, while Vanessa and Thomas merely began to walk out. Pearson and Ariel followed after them, leaving Chase and Bakugo alone.
"Ok, we're alone, dude. Spill, what's going on in that fluffy head of yours?" Chase lightly joked as he sat on a wheely chair. Bakugo sighed, not knowing exactly how to breach the subject with the said groom. But, he had to ask, he had to know what to do.
"It's about my invitation,"
"Ooo! Do you like them?! Denki picked the colors! I was iffy at first, but after looking at his design, I just thought, 'wow! So unique!'. That's his calligraphy on the invitation, ya know!" Chase beamed. Bakugo couldn't help but feel nervous as cold sweat began to pool down his neck. There was something about Chase talking so lovingly about Denki that made him want to cry. He's had dreams, multiple dreams, where Denki was his and Kirishima's little husband. The ultimate little spoon but also a power top that loved to tease and toy with them. He tells himself that in another universe, that could be his life. But, not in this universe, Denki loves Chase here. The reminder leaves him feeling bitter and sad, but a part of him is happy Denki has found such a trustworthy and caring partner.
"The invitation was lovely, but, I'm talking about my RSVP," Chase immediately straightened out, all brightness dimming.
"Ah, I see," Chase hummed as he brushed his hair from his face, "I assume it's about the plus one page your QR code has," Bakugo nodded and waited for him to continue. Chase took the hint and sighed, "listen, I know it may seem like we only did it because of you dating Kirishima. But, that's not it at all. Denki understands you two are a package deal, and doesn't wish to make things uncomfortable for Kirishima when it comes to work. He knows how it feels to be isolated, to be the one left out and alone, and he doesn't want that for Kirishima. He also has been saying how he kind of understood where he was coming from. I told him about his love confession after Denki ranted to me about Kirishima backstabbing him. He said had things been different, there could've been something, although you'd have to compete with Shinso. I heard those two were a couple on the down-low," Chase chuckled. Bakugo was taken aback, but looking back at how Shinso acted towards the class after Denki left, his hostility made so much more sense.
"So, you're saying Kirishima is welcomed, you're not doing this out of obligation or courtesy?" Bakugo questioned. Chase shook his head and giggled again, waving off Bakugo's concern.
"Denki is healing, and honestly, writing 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' actually helped him vent out A LOT of that pent up rage and frustration. He even told me that if you didn't accept the plus one, we would've sent one to Kirishima via express mail. He wants to see Kirishima, which I don't get. I mean, after everything he's done, I still don't trust him," Chase looked at Bakugo with honest, doting eyes, "but, my love for Denki outweighs any hatred I have for Kirishima. If Denki wants Kirishima in his life, I won't protest. I will always support him, just as he always supported me. So, please, give Kirishima a warm hug from Denki and accept that plus one. It will be nice to finally put all this to rest," Chase winked, "I have to get back to recording this, just shoot a message through my socials if you ever need anything else! Peace, Dynamight!" After waving goodbye, Bakugo hung up the call. He smiled, finally able to get some peace at the whole situation.
Meanwhile, the rest of STORM began recording the last few pieces of Denki's wedding present.
