Story #2: The Crayon Factory
The trees were shrieking. The flowers were weeping. The garden was moaning. The sweet drizzle felt like tears of the sky. The broken statue of the nutcracker was staring into space with its complaining eyes. The laborers were taking down the Nut-cracker garden outside Hope will town. The town was silent. Order 144 had been issued. Everybody was hibernating in their homes like a bear. Even the worker bees were sitting idly in the hives.
The Queen Bee was flying outside her hive stressfully when the worker bees came back. They were sent by the Queen bee to trace the reason behind destruction of the garden. Those bees came back and informed Her Majesty that a rich businessman bought that land from the government since he was setting up a crayon factory. Destruction was near. She could foresee this fact.
Life went on. The people of Hope-will returned back to their daily routines. The worker bees kept on gathering nectar from the forest.
The crayon factory also went into operations. It was a big building made of concrete. There was always hustle and bustle around it. Giant trucks came in and collected the packaged crayons. The people of the factory were just working. All of their fears were in vain.
The Queen Bee was happy for not migrating at that time. A year passed peacefully and nothing unusual happened. The workers seemed to have found some work. They spent days investigating the factory and evening bragging and storytelling.
Then, people in the town started to fall ill. It was a strange illness beyond anyone's knowledge. No one seemed to know the cause. Truth didn't come out until one night drones brought back some news. The government was shutting down the crayon factory.
The government officials had visited the crayon factory. They investigated and took samples. It was found that the factory was discharging toxic lead waste into drinking water. Now they were looking for an alternative. Queen bee called in an urgent meeting. She ordered all bees to leave as much honey in hives for people. Since ancient times, honey has always been an effective remedy for all illnesses.
Once that was done, she instructed them to shift the young ones to her hive. For offense she divided the workers into two equal parts; both teams were assigned to spy on Hope-will and the crayon factory respectively. The worker bees were told to speed up the process of nectar collection as well.
With every passing day the situation was getting out of hand. People were falling ill and dying. They were still unable to trace the origin of this unknown menace. On the other hand, the crayon factory even after the warning was operating like before. The only difference was that they appointed a few new people to look into the alternative.
The clock was ticking and the Queen bee was clueless. Every growing hour brought more frustration and panic. People were falling. Frenzy was present in all the hives.
Life took a fickle turn when one night they returned with news. They told the Queen bee that the factory owner, with the help of environmental experts, had worked out a solution; they were planning to trap the innocent people of Hope-will in the name of aid to hide their wrongdoings. Once they won over their hearts then they would ask for the hives. The Queen Bee fumed at this and devised a practical strategy. It was now or never.
The next morning Hope-will echoed with the terrifying shrieks of people. The air was filled with honey bees. It was the first time they ever stepped out of their boundaries but surprisingly they were peaceful. They were just there circling around in the air.
The chief of the town stepped out to examine the situation. As soon as the bees saw the man wearing a cloak of honor; they leapt towards him. The poor man spent his hours running and hiding in the streets of Hope-will from the foreign invaders.
Soon he got tired. The bees saw an opening, so they carried him to the nearest playground. They put him down on the sand and handed him a twig. After that, they arranged themselves and started dancing. Before the chief could comprehend it, there appeared a word: Listen
The chief nodded and so the bees staring dancing again:
Danger ahead
That was how the chief and bees communicated. The chief was shocked to know the truth. He also visited drinking water reserves and saw traces of contamination. He thanked the bees and promised to take necessary action.
He went home and called in a secret meeting. He discussed the matter with elders and trusted ones. They urged him to talk things out nicely. The next morning a sand box was lying in front of the hives containing a message from the chief. It brought a wave of happiness among the bees.
That same day, people from the factory approached people of the town but they were turned down coldly. This drew the factory owner's rage. He sent some hooligans to beat the chief up. This didn't cause any change in their resolve. The people of Hope-will were thus given three days to decide their fate; Either they give away bee hives or get killed with them. The queen bee was continuously hearing from spy drones. She was surprised how nasty humans could be even with their own race.
On the last eve, the day the deadline ended in the morning, everyone gathered in the main hall. The situation was now do or die. The chief chose young, vigilant and strong men from the present ones. He instructed them to collect all kinds of ropes, twigs, canes and some red chili from the town. He also ordered them to bring all the thorny bushes from the nearby forest and spread it around the outskirts of the city.
He chose the building of the church and transferred all children, women and old people there. Nobody in the town went to sleep that night. Running here and there, diligently collecting stuff, they were all hopeful to put a strong fight for their survival.
The next morning proved to be a living nightmare for everyone. Their jaws dropped when they saw big machines coming towards town. Thankfully those big monsters soon fell prey to the thorny bushes. People were happy but then a wave of big white clouds came from the rival parties which soon diffused off into gas. People lost their sight due to this. They started shouting and running towards the city in pain. When the rivals saw the coast was clear, they took advantage of this. They entered and started to break and burn things in the town.
The queen bee who was watching the whole spectacle had had enough. She ordered the bees to attack. The bees charged and stung intruders mercilessly until they lost their will to fight.
While that was happening, the smoke cleared out. People came back. They tied the intruders up with ropes.
They cleaned the outskirts of town and pushed the rotten machines off the cliff. With some unity and hard-work, the tall monstrous machines fell apart. After that, everyone returned to their homes. The chief announced compensations for damages. A grand service in the church was also announced in the evening. As for the captives, they were left hanging in the main market. All the passer-bys gave them disgusted looks as they hid their faces in embarrassment.
After the evening service everyone collected in the market. Now they needed to decide the fate of intruders. Many people wanted to throw them off the cliff. Some urged that they should be left in the bee hives to meet their end.
Before they could say anything, though, the factory owner held the chief's feet while crying. He begged for forgiveness and the chief melted hearing that. He promised to manage the waste properly. As he was already repenting they forgave him. Soon he returned and abided by his promises. Now people, nature and technology can coexist in the same ecosystem.
Kindness is indeed a policy.
One can prosper without causing any harm to the environment only a kind heart and emphatic touch is needed!
