Story #1: The Tale of a King
Yellow eyes filled with malice scanned the town, a smirk on his face as Oni King Rasen sat on his throne, surrounded by his loyal Onimaro.
After so long... he was finally going to rule over the human world, and quite possibly the Youmakai. Now all he had to deal with was those pesky humans and their annoying Youkai pets. How long would that take? A mere second?
Rasen laughed. How dare those humans think they had a chance against him. After everything he went through, he could face anything now.
Are you sure?
He froze. That voice....!
Sneers, mocking words began entering his mind.
He gripped the arm of his chair, almost breaking it. Why wouldn't they just leave him alone?
"Leave me alone, leave me alone, leave me alone!!!!"
Was he even hearing his own voice from all that time ago?
He gripped his head, trying to control himself. He couldn't break now! He had to be strong!
Yes, his last vow to them was that he was going to be strong. His last words to them that he hoped they heard.
That day was the reason he could fight now. These pathetic Youkai... they treated Oni like nothing... like something that could be easily forgotten.
Those Enmas were despicable. They deserved to perish. They didn't care, they spouted nonsense about humans infecting Yo-kai with misdeeds, when it was the Yo-kai themselves at fault. The Enma just blamed whoever they first laid eyes on, they took no responsibility.
They got rid of his tribe, and told others that it was a tribe that deserved its punishment. Huh... what stupid words... how could they say that? Even the humans nowadays associated Oni with evil and bad luck. The Enma tribe was the one who deserved to die. They had to be punished for their discrimination.
Rasen gave a chuckle, hopefully that Kaira guy would execute all of the Enma tribe, he had the darkness in him for it. It was all ready. The plan he had set in motion... It was going to come to fruition. Perhaps he should greet the humans with something 'nice', as a thanks for entertaining him for a good while.
Hm... what should he give them? A quick death? No that seemed too generous. Perhaps he could taunt them for their weaknesses? No, they'd probably learn from those weaknesses if he just blatantly pointed them out, he knew better than that.
Rasen frowned, eyebrows going down in a strange thinking pose. Now that he thought of it, it sure had been a while since he gave a gift to someone... even longer back if one were thinking about a genuine gift.
"What should I give them?" He mumbled. It was a strange dilemma he had here. What gifts did he give to people in the past? He mulled over it, not noticing the confused looks his henchmen were giving him.
After about ten minutes that probably should have gone into battle plans, Rasen clicked his fingers. That's it! He almost wished there was a lightbulb above him, to flicker at his victory.
"Rasen-sama?" Poor poor Onimaro. They were witnessing their boss being... Strange.
"Silence, I just lost my brilliant idea!" Rasen waved his hand, shooing away the millions of Onimaro, "Go attack some humans, and, I don't know... do bad stuff, I'm pondering on something important."
It was hilarious seeing how the group of small gremlins stared at their master. Was something wrong with him? Was he sick? Was old age finally getting to him?
"Rasen-sama, should we take you to the hospital?" One of them was brave enough to speak up. One of them had heard that the boy, Touma, had parents who were doctors there. Perhaps, maybe after they finished being all scared, they could help their master. Oh and also, if their master could fit in the hospital.
Could he, though? He was a giant. A massive one. And he didn't have a Lightside to shrink down to. He was special. Very... very special.
Rasen stopped, "Why do I feel like someone's thinking ill of me?" he mumbled to himself.
The Onimaro all gulped. Were they going to die?
"Probably those humans," Rasen added, nodding as if agreeing with himself. Yeah that made total sense! His henchmen would never do that. Everyone knows that in a show like Yo-kai Watch, no henchmen has character personality beyond just simple quirks. With that in mind, he just knew they didn't have the guts for that. That was so true.
"Y- Yeah..." the Onimaro nodded.
"Did I ask for your opinion?" Rasen turned around, raising his eyebrow. He sure had the sass of those Queen Bees they heard of that are in high school. How old was their king again?
"O-Of course not! M-my apologies!" He stammered.
"Thought so," Rasen pressed his lips together, turning away from the Onimaro. Now, back to more important matters: the gift!
Gift gift gift.... What should he get for them? Perhaps he should dig into his past memories to think of something. Yes, that was a good idea... he closed his eyes, relaxing into the throne. It had been awhile since he last relaxed like this.
Once again, the Onimaro stared at their leader in confusion. Did old people always drift off like that? He was acting weird. They sure hoped this wouldn't get in the way of their battle against the humans.
A deep sigh came out of Rasen's mouth, he was reminiscing way too much. The past... was harsh for him. He shouldn't try to think about it so much. Rubbing his forehead, he inhaled.
"I'll just give them a quick death," Rasen announced.
The Onimaro all tilted their heads again.
"Come on Onimaro! What are you waiting for? We have to do some planning!" Rasen chastised them like a grandpa scolding his grandchildren.
"We don't understand, Rasen-sama," the whole group chorused in perfect unity. What were they supposed to do?
"You're all hopeless," Rasen sighed, dramatically sitting back down on his throne as if exhausted by the Onimaro's very presence.
They all tilted their heads once again.
"Go away, leave my sight, I don't want to deal with your unwavering stupidity," Rasen gracefully waved his hand at them like some actual Queen.
Was he a Queen Bee now? Or did something happen to him? Maybe he just had cold feet. Yeah that sounded logical! Those humans were quite powerful! They had Touma on their side too!
Obviously, all of that must have frightened their poor master. As old and scary as he was, he was still pitiful. In fact, if he didn't have all that power, he might as well be seen as a helpless old man who's being picked on by a bunch of kids, just because he hurt their feelings. When it was put like that, it almost sounded like Rasen was the victim.
Victim. Oh god, that sounded so cute! It had been a while since they last thought of their master as cu- No! They can't reminisce! That would mean they're getting old! They shuddered.
"What's the matter now?" Rasen sighed as he turned to his subordinates again.
"N-Nothing Rasen-sama.." they chorused.
"Then go," Rasen cheeks almost puffed up like a pufferfish.
They barely managed to stop their eyes from rolling, "Hai, Rasen-sama." And off they went, to spread evil and misdeeds, or at least, they tried to.
Rasen then returned to thinking. What was he even going to do? With fools like his henchmen, those humans might have an actual chance against him! He sighed. But at the same time, he still cared for them. They were like hopeless grandchildren that grandparents give tough love to. He loved them so so much. Just like how he loved...
Rasen smile turned into a wistful one. He hoped they were watching him now. He hoped they were cheering him on. Rasen sighed, he couldn't even remember their name...
Those Enmas locked him in... and killed his friend... the only one who ever batted him an eye. They would pay. No matter what the cost. Even if he had to die. He would drag them all down with him.
Die die die.
That's all he had to say to the Enma tribe.
And now, it was time to avenge them. They stood no chance against him.
May the odds, ever be in his favour.
***
How...? How was he defeated? How could this happen? He had all the powers of the Onimaro united. He had the hope of his friend... he had the determination to see it all through, so how? It felt so... so surreal.
Even some of his own betrayed him to save that boy. They'd all probably finish off that fragment he shot the boy with. It was inevitable.
As his eye stared at the sky, he wondered. How? And more importantly, why? Everything he did was for the Kaima. And the Oni, to some extent, he still wanted to fight for his tribe's rights. Everything he did was for their cause.
And yet.... was this the end? How did they beat him? Did it even matter anymore? He lost. He lost to the humans and the Enma tribe with all their teamwork and unwavering hope.
Why? Why was life unfair? Why did he have to lose? Why did they have to die? Fate had allowed him to return early, only to be killed the very night he got there. Fate had allowed him to build an empire only for it be all destroyed by his sworn enemy: the Enma tribe. Fate had allowed him to make a friend in all of his despair all that time ago, only for them to be killed right before he could tell them how he truly felt. Fate was both kind and cruel.
How cruel, indeed. Was it proof that they were right? That in the end, he was the villain. He was the monster.
It felt painful. His heart ached.
Perhaps they were right in extinguishing his tribe.
"That's not true..." a soft voice echoed through his head.
It was like time stopped. Eyes wide, he tried to identify it. The voice was soft, yet elegant enough to intimidate almost anyone. Nothing intimidated him anymore, yet the voice sounded oddly familiar... as though he only recently heard it.
"W-Who are you?" he asked.
There a moment of silence before the voice began talking again, "I'm just an old relative..." if the voice had a body, they'd probably be doing a weak shrug.
"Old relative?" He frowned. He wasn't sure if this voice was lying or telling the truth.
"You may have heard rumours of my name. My name is Shuka."
"S-SHUKA?!" His remaining eye nearly fell out of its socket. The former Oni princess from ancient times? How? How was she here? Wasn't she dead? Although, he himself was dead. In a sense, right?
"I'm very sorry for your fate..." Shuka sighed apologetically.
"W-Why are you saying that?"
"If it wasn't for my weaknesses, this probably wouldn't have happened..." Shuka sighed again.
"N-No, I-I have myself to blame..."
"Yourself?" Shuka repeated in a confused tone.
"I-I was delusional," he mumbled quietly.
"Delusional?" Shuka once again repeated, another confused tone lacing her voice.
Rasen nodded, unable to hold back the tears anymore.
"I see..." Shuka's voice echoed quietly. For a while there was silence. It was almost as if she was trying to think of something to do. "In a way, your state is my fault. After Kuuten died, I was never able to give a smile to my people... a reassurance that love and kindness prevails."
"W-What does that have to do with anything?" he inquired curiously.
Shuka gave a heartfelt chuckle, "Love and kindness can go a very far way." Despite not seeing her, Rasen could just feel the smile Shuka was making. "You know, I've only just recently been able to contact you. Time doesn't really matter here... so I believe I've just arrived at a time where you only just died, correct?"
"Y-Yeah," Rasen nodded quietly.
"I want to give you a chance, the chance Kuuten gave me after I found out the truth about him," Shuka explained, her voice still soft and gentle yet powerful and firm.
"D-Do I even deserve it?" he asked her.
"Of course you do, because I still see light in your heart... there's still something to be saved in everyone," Shuka replied.
His eyes widened. Something in her tone told him... told him that she was being sincere. That it was true.
"Let's begin first by finding the good in your heart again."
"O-Okay then," he nodded, feeling something new.
Suddenly, the dark area surrounding shifted, it all went white. And then, Rasen could see Shuka clearly.
She was beautiful. Her hair was an Earth brown, and her eyes were a crystal blue. She wore a long red dress, decorated with different colours and ornaments.
Rasen's face flared up. If she wasn't his ancestor, perhaps he would have fallen for her. She was just stunning.
In response, Shuka gave a cough, "All right, let us go to your memories."
"O-Okay then," he nodded. And with that, the white began shifting to something more... familiar to Rasen. This was his childhood, it was all flooding back to him. Memories of loneliness and isolation. He shuddered.
"Rasen-sama!" Another familiar voice called out to him, or rather, the younger version of him standing by a window. A window that the present Rasen vaguely recognised, it was the mirror he always stood by every day of his life, watching over his kingdom.
"Yes?" He turned, facing the person who had just entered.
"You should go to the throne room, you've looking out the window for an hour now," a royal guard suggested, walking over to him. "Honestly, there's not much to see out there but a bunch of peasants... ones that are under the rule of those Enma tribes. I don't see why you like watching stuff like them play around."
"I don't like it, per se," he frowned.
"Then stop looking out of the window," the guard frowned back, a hint of disrespect lacing his tone. "It makes you look weak when you look out the window."
"Shouldn't you be at your post?" the younger Rasen shot back. "It makes you look like you're bored."
The guard gave a hiss before walking off, "And this is why you have no friends," he grumbled quietly as he slammed the door behind him.
Rasen could only exhale. He didn't feel very good all of a sudden. His heart ached, and it was beating faster than usual. His head pounded, as though someone were smashing his head in.
"What's wrong with me?" the younger him sniffed.
The present Rasen's eyes softened, this was all too familiar. So so familiar.
"You were so lonely back then," Shuka sighed.
"I-I suppose so...." He agreed silently.
Shuka turned to him, "Perhaps we should move onto when you met them.
"W-What?!" His eyes widened in shock. How did she know about that?
"How do you know that?..." He asked once more.
"Let's just call it a 'Watching over you' incident," Shuka waved him off.
"A what now?" He blinked. Was she a stalker?!
"Being dead gets a little boring, so I just began watching over everyone on that," Shuka pointed to the mini TV across them, floating around the area.
Rasen shivered, who knows what Shuka saw through that monitor. What if she heard him that one time where he was singing in the shower? Too scary. This lady, ancestor or not, was somewhat confusing and scary.
"D- Don't worry! I stopped watching you after your friend died!" Shuka turned away. She had been watching him up until then? He did so many embarrassing things back then, though! His face went red. This was so embarrassing!!
He almost didn't catch Shuka when she started speaking again, "And besides, I've been watching other people for so many millenniums, I've forgotten most of the embarrassing things you did," she added, hopefully not lying.
"R-Really?" Rasen looked at her, hope shining in his eyes.
Shuka just gave a nod, "Yeah, and besides, there's this adorable little boy I've been watching who's much more interesting than you!" she tried to sound positive. Rasen could just feel the massive rock of accidental insult crushing him on the back.
"W-Who on Earth is that?!"
Shuka looked away, "He's a very cute young man, he might be even cuter than Kuuten." Rasen could haven sworn he saw Shuka blush embarrassedly for a second, but it was gone before he could even confirm it. "Ahh, I'm so embarrassed for saying such a thing!"
"W-What's his appeal?"
Wait hold up. Was he jealous of this kid?! Rasen covered his face, he truly had fallen from grace. Oh, what was he to do?
"A-Anyway, let us move on!" Shuka spoke.
"Okay then..." he reminded himself to ask her later on.
The area around them shifted, this time they ended up in a small quaint village. This was his hometown. Another small place he ruled over, alongside two other small villages. They weren't much, but it meant enough for him to have guards.
The haunting voices came back.
"Did you hear? That's the prince... I heard he's going to become king."
"Really? But he hardly ever shows himself to the public, he's so cold."
"Should we even have a king like that?"
"He's just like Queen Shuka. After that servant of hers passed, she never gave a smile again. Her reign became terrifying."
"She became so distrusting, she made no friends and only did what was needed. When people asked for food and drinks, she gave it. And that's all. She was so gloomy, just like the prince now."
"Anyone who questioned her would be executed publicly. So many people died because of her inability to move on. Gosh, how precious was this servant anyway?! If it was to the point that she would change so quickly."
Shuka's eyebrow twitched before she gave a polite cough, "Honestly..." she shook her head in disappointment.
Rasen looked at her, eyes conveying his confusion.
"Sorry, seeing those guys just upsets me," Shuka apologises, taking a quick bow.
"No worries," he waved it off.
Shuka turned back to the memory playing, "So... those were the people of your little kingdom?"
Rasen nodded quietly. He couldn't say a lot after seeing this. After reliving it.
The past Rasen stayed silent, staring away at his people, wondering what he had to do to change their minds on him. Yellow eyes held sadness in them.
"Geez, would all of you just shut up?" groaned a voice at the other citizens.
Present Rasen's eyes widened, that voice... it was them!
"You are all so whiny, you know? Without him, you would be dead or enslaved by now," the voice sounded cross.
"Hey, isn't that a Kaima Yo-kai?" One of the other Oni citizens whispered in shock.
"What about it?" There was salt in his tone.
"Shouldn't you be off serving a master or something?" Another one frowned, crossing their arms.
A scoff was heard, "All I hear are excuses. How heartless you are. You can't even show appreciation."
The present Rasen just stared blankly at said Kaima Yo-kai, his eyes softening. "It's... it's you..." he whispered.
The younger Rasen on the other hand was staring the Kaima Yo-kai with confusion. Why was a Kaima Yo-kai standing up for him?
"Just leave him if you're not here to hang out with him," the Kaima's arms were crossed.
The Oni were silent for a while. Why was a Kaima of all Yo-kai protecting the cold-hearted prince of the kingdom? The one who just stands around, and watches them, not interacting with anyone with kindness?
As if reading their minds, the Kaima's eyes narrowed, "NOW."
With that, the other Oni sped off, grumbling and whispering a whole bunch of nasty stuff.
"Ignore them," he sighed.
The younger Rasen blinked, as if trying to process what had to just happened, "Why?" is all that escaped from his half-frozen mouth.
"Why not?" He shot back.
"Didn't you hear them? I 'deserve it'," Rasen looked down, crossing his arms. Rasen wasn't a fool, his parents always taught him that he was above most Oni. He didn't really believe the words they spewed. But that didn't mean it didn't hurt. That didn't mean it didn't sting so hard. And that didn't mean he was aware of those facts.
The words he heard next would change his world.
"No you don't. Just because you were born into royalty doesn't mean that you don't deserve friends just like any other person."
Rasen's eyes widened, "Who are you?"
The person smiled, holding a hand out.
"I'm Ikari. Nice to meet you."
"Rasen," the younger Rasen held his hand out as well. As they shook hands, a part of present Rasen ached.
"That was your first friend, correct?" Shuka turned to Rasen's side.
The present Rasen nodded, tears falling down his cheeks as he remembered Ikari.
Shuka smiled softly, "You cared for each other so much..."
Rasen nodded again.
Shuka gave a sad smile, "Would you like to move on a little more?" she asked.
Rasen mulled over it for a while before nodding. What was the point in all of this though? How would this find the good in his heart? "I don't get it..."
Shuka's head turned to Rasen, "What's the matter?" she asked.
"How is this supposed to help me?" He asked.
Shuka stared at Rasen for a while, "You'll see," she smiled.
He just nodded, still confused.
And with that the world around Rasen and Shuka faded to something else again.
Rasen wondered where they would go next. The spectrums soon turned into another familiar landscape.
Rasen's eyes faded, instantly recognising the scene he was in. This was Ikari's....
"Please no," Rasen whispered. It all came back to him.
"Please... watch it," Shuka mumbled.
"No... I can't..." He backed away.
Shuka held his hand, "Please," she pleaded.
It scared him. Remembering it, it scared him. It tore his heart apart.
"Rasen, let's go to the field today!"
"Come on, don't be a slowpoke!"
"You're getting smarter! Nice job!"
Those memories... they were of him and Ikari. Tears fell down his cheeks. Shuka held his hand, like a mother. He sighed.
Shuka gave a soft smile. Rasen really wondered how this was the same Shuka he had heard about from legends. The one who was said to be terrifying. The one who went insane and distrusted everyone around her. He scratched his head. Maybe she was like him...
Misunderstood.
Rasen sighed. It was embarrassing to think that he made such assumptions on her, just like the bullies. What a hypocrite he was. He felt so mean.
Shuka just gripped his hand tighter, "Before you see this... I want you to remember all the good times you spent with Ikari," she told him, a sprinkle of urgency in her tone.
Rasen focused for a little while before giving a growl. He and Ikari spent so long together, why couldn't he think of anything? It was so frustrating!
"Maybe try thinking of one of the most memorable times you spent with him," Shuka awkwardly suggested.
While she was trying, it was clear that she wasn't the best. Rasen thought that maybe Shuka wasn't as well composed and elegant as legends stated. Probably awkward.
"Come on then! Less thinking about my awkwardness and more thinking about Ikari!" Shuka gave Rasen a light whack on the head.
Rasen's eyes widened. How did she know that? Was he staring at her? She smiled a bit softly.
"Okay," Rasen closed his eyes, beginning to dig through his mind again. He slowly began to remember. All the times when they went fishing, the times when Ikari pushed him into the lake by 'accident' and he pouted good-naturedly just thinking about it — Rasen actually believed that lie for a good century or two. He remembered their trips to the library, learning about the past. It's was like he was reliving it all in that very second.
A smile appeared on Rasen's face. Remembering all of that now... it was nice. The good in his heart... it felt bright.
And then, it all went cold. He blinked. What just happened?
Shuka's grip on him grew tighter, "It's almost time," she whispered.
"Time? Time for what?"
"To watch Ikari die again..." Shuka sighed.
Shackles rose. Tears fell.
Rasen closed his eyes, gripping Shuka's hand tighter than before. This was it.
"Please, you have to watch this," Shuka simply said.
He gulped.
"I know you can do this," Shuka added.
"O-Okay then..."
Shuka gave a smile before letting go of Rasen's hand, "Then please, open up your eyes."
His fists tightened but he slowly opened it. It was finally time to remember that day.
He was ready. To face the day of his execution.
"DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE!"
"He's an accomplice to the rebellion!"
The younger Rasen being held back could only cry, "NO! That's not true!" His screams fell on deaf ears, though, as Ikari was dragged forward.
"Don't hurt him!" Ikari called out as he watch the guards holding Rasen back begin to attack him, most likely for not standing still. Was he that important to Rasen? For him to disobey the law and try to stop his execution, it was a heavy price.
Present Rasen still had tears in his eyes.
"Death to the ungrateful traitor!" cried an Oni of the crowd. Of all the things that both Rasens could have heard, that hurt. It was so hypocritical. They were the traitors.
"SHUT UP!" Younger Rasen screamed, anger visible in his hatred-filled eyes.
Ikari looked up at the younger Rasen, his whole body beaten up to a pulp, "Rasen..." he mumbled.
"Let him go!" Rasen begged, falling to his knees.
"Young Prince, he's a murderer!" A guard protested.
"NO YOU ALL ARE!"
The Oni citizens all titled their heads, "We beg your pardon?"
"YOU'RE THE REASON HE KILLED!" Rasen hissed angrily.
"Rasen, please hold your tongue," Rasen's father, also known as the Oni King, sighed as he walked to Rasen's side. "You're being immature."
"But father!" the younger Rasen protested.
"Please Rasen, this boy killed some Oni. You shouldn't associate yourself with him," he pleaded with his son with a soft and gentle tone, telling a different story from the scornful stare he was giving the younger Rasen.
The present Rasen could only grip his fist. His father was always telling him what to do, what to look like and what to be. He hated that so so much.
Tough love or pure obligation, Rasen didn't know what his father gave him. He liked to believe it was tough love. After all, it was from all of that 'tough love' he was able to learn quite a lot about the world. But at the same time... all those orders, scolds, and verbal insults told a different story.
Present Rasen inhaled and exhaled. Watching all of this reminded him just how terrible his upbringing was. But he had to be brave. Shuka brought him for a reason, and that was to give him a second chance, to regain the light in his heart. He didn't know how this was going to do it, but he just had to endure it, there had to be an answer in the end. His fists were tight.
"I'm afraid we don't have the time for this," Rasen's father lightly pushed the younger Rasen away from the scene, covering his son's eyes from the bloody torture going on.
"But Father...." Younger Rasen's eyes were filled with a fire. A fire of hatred.
"Enough," Rasen's father glared back at his son, his grip getting a slight bit tighter than what it was before.
"RASEN!" Ikari screamed in agony.
"Just do it," Rasen's father spoke.
"NOO!" Rasen screamed, tears falling down his cheeks. He kept shaking against his father's grip, trying not to look. He didn't want to watch it.
Shuka turned to Rasen, "Did you know something? You didn't hear Ikari properly that day? You were too instilled with fear and anger."
"W-What?" His eyes widened. What was she talking about? He never heard anything apart from Ikari's screams of pain, other than that it was all silent.
Shuka gave a sad nod, as she turned back to the scene.
Ikari was muttering something... to Rasen!
Present Rasen was agape in disbelief. How did he miss that?!
"Once again, you were too scared and angry to listen to anything or anyone. And whatever you did hear, you ended up burying to the deepest depths of your mind, twisting into something far different from what you really heard," Shuka explained.
Rasen's eyes widened before he turned to Ikari, who was still muttering away as the Oni guards whipped him.
"Ikari...."
"Rasen," Ikari whispered, he was no longer screaming now.
"Ikari!!" Rasen screamed.
Ikari gave a smile, "Please... live on... please don't despair... smile. Keep on moving... and when you rule this place... please..."
The present Rasen leaned in, ready to hear whatever Ikari had to say. Please what? What did he want to say? Ikari...
"Don't give up on hope... Keep on moving on no matter what."
His eyes widened. Ikari.... Had wanted him to move on. How could he have missed that? How?Shuka gave a smile, "Hope..."
Hope?
The younger Rasen didn't have any time to process those words as Ikari's beaten body finally dropped dead, hitting the ground. Scream after scream left his mouth. How could they do this?! Ikari had done nothing wrong!! How could his own people do this? How could his father do this? All he could feel was rage.
"Come on Rasen, it's time to go now. Your mother wishes you to watch you attempt to lead," Rasen's father's arm hooked onto Rasen's arm, some poison in his tone at the word attempt.
Rasen tried to break free, but it didn't work.
The present Rasen sighed. He almost forgot about his mother. But then again, even in his childhood he kept forgetting about her. She was always just there, making polite talk with him and his father, that was it. She was never truly all there. She never actually cared either. For a second, Rasen wished to be like that Touma kid with loving parents, who had real reasons to be so distant.
As the memory faded, the guilt, remorse, and self-hatred swarmed him. He had let Ikari down. It was all his fault for not listening. Voices came back.
"Monster!"
"He's one of the worst enemies of Yo-kai history..."
"He's worse than Shuka! Maybe even Soranaki!"
Tears rained down on the ground he was on.
Shuka sighed, "The voices are right to some extent. Both you and I are terrible," she walked over to Rasen before taking his hands in, "but that doesn't mean you can't change."
"C-Change?"
Shuka nodded, "It's not easy, but it's possible," the area around them suddenly shifted again, showing a shower of memories of different stories. Stories of different Yo-kai, Ubaune, Ikakamone-gicho, Gogogo Godfather and many others. All of them were shown, repenting.
A light emitted from Shuka's chest where her heart was, "Rasen... do you understand now? You had good back then, you held onto hope back then. Even after Ikari died, you had hope, it may not have been the right one, but it was still hope. You gave kindness to your people."
His eyes widened, and they watered. He finally understood what everything was for now. This felt nice. It was like a weight had just been lifted off of his shoulders. A smile made its way into his face.
Shuka turned around, "It looks like my time with you is coming to an end," she smiled, as the area around them began to shift into a white void.
"Wait, don't leave!" he begged.
Shuka blinked, "Hm? Technically I won't be living, after all I've been reincarnated, so my soul is always living on." If she had glasses, she probably would have adjusted them now, like some anime character.
He blinked. What was she on about? Reincarnation?
"You've been reincarnated?" He asked.
Shuka gave a nod, before giving a quiet giggle, "Yeah, I've been reincarnated into a girl named Amano Natsume. Ironically, she and her adorable, cute, and fluffy little brother Keisuke, are the children of the former Yo-kai Watch wielder, it's so funny."
His eyes widened, "A-Amano Natsume?"
There was a long moment of silence before finally, Shuka let out a loud, "Ohhh! That's right, you met her!" How did she only just realise that now?
Rasen's mouth was open.
Shuka seemed so casual about it, she was just rubbing the back of her head like it was no big deal.
The brat- no, kid who beat him was her reincarnation? It all made sense now! The Great Shuka's power even proceeds her reincarnations!
"Ahh, Keisuke is so cute! Can't wait till I can go on break and watch the adorable thing," Shuka went mumbling on.
"Break?" He blinked.
Shuka nodded, "After helping you, I'm going on break. Helping Yo-kai can be so tiresome," she pouted. Was the former Oni Princess feeling lazy?
Rasen sweatdropped. This was weird. So much for an elegant Queen. This was so unlike her, or rather, unlike what legends told her to be. He rubbed his head.
"Well, I think it's time for me to go," Shuka interrupted Rasen's thoughts.
"So what now?" He asked her.
Shuka smiled, as her body began fading away into the light, "You'll be revived soon. After that, it's all up to you."
"W-Wait!" He reached out to her.
However, it was too late, she was gone. Rasen was all alone now. What was he to do now?
Rasen inhaled, it was all up to him, huh? In that moment, he decided. He was going to make Ikari proud. He was going to keep having hope. He was going to give people hope.
A light engulfed him, making him feel... happy. Satisfied. And most of all hopeful. He could do this. With that, Rasen disappeared into the light.
Who knows where he is now. Who knows what his fate was. But all that needs to be known is that he now understands and believes in hope. He's found his friends, his family.
This was the untold story of Oniou Rasen.
