Edited version of High School Mystery (it makes a lot of sense now)
Some parts are the same but I edited it and it's quite different now
A big cloud of smoke billowed from my high school, Rivervale High. What was going on? Is something on fire? I ran as fast as my legs could carry me to where the smoke was coming from and was horrified to see the new auditorium in the midst of burning down. Just my luck, looks like I would have to solve another case with Bailey, my partner in crime. Luckily, the firefighters were already there and were trying to extinguish the fire.
You must be wondering what I am talking about! My name is Hayley. Bailey and I are Rivervale's well-known school detectives. This became official after solving about two to three cases in our first two years in Rivervale. After helping the school uncover the mystery of the stolen laptop last year, the students heard of our reputations, how we solved it and now everyone wanted us to investigate their problems!
Back to the scene, there was an ambulance and someone on a stretcher was being wheeled into the ambulance. Someone must have been hurt! I saw Bailey in the crowd nearest to the fire and she was taking some photographs. I also noted down the names of the other students other than Bailey who were taking photos at the scene as they may come in useful when we are carrying out our investigations. Soon, the fire was extinguished and it thankfully did not spread wildly or the damage would have been extensive. The security guards came and ushered the children to a safe place where they could wait for their parents to pick them up. Bailey and I hurried to find the principal, Mr Billy, to ask if we could stay and look through the footage on the security cameras so that we could have collect some clues to investigate the case. Mr Billy was reluctant initially but relented after much persuasion from us. He took us to the security room where he taught us how to look through the security cameras' footage.
Before he left, he told us that the janitor, Ms Grace, was in school early and tried to extinguish the fire. However, she is now hospitalized due to the severity of the fire. When we heard that, we were saddened as Ms Grace is the kindest person in the world. She would greet us cheerfully whenever she saw us and would give the students encouragement whenever their examinations were approaching. We quickly maintained our composure and resumed work as there was much to do. Bailey and I took our detective notebooks where we wrote down many things, such as names of suspects and clues that we have found. We were determined to solve this mystery.
Suddenly, Bailey whispered in an excited voice, "Look over here Hayley!" she said, pointing to the top left-hand side of the screen.
I was confused about why she had to whisper. Nevertheless, I looked at where she was pointing and saw two figures who were creeping toward the auditorium after putting up several posters on the pillar in the school Hall. We looked at each other and we both had our 'Are you thinking what I am thinking?' faces on. We nodded and immediately dashed to the school hall to see what the posters were about. Upon reaching the hall, we saw posters pasted everywhere, urging students to go to prom this year. Bailey, who is part of the prom committee suggested that I should go for the next meeting with her so that we could investigate further as we suspected that the fire was done by some people who sit in the committee.
On the second day, during assembly, Mr Billy solemnly told the school that Ms Grace is hospitalized for at least a month as she is suffering from 2nd-degree burns but her condition has stabilized. Everyone's eyes widened in shock and was too stunned to speak. Even the teachers could not believe what they were hearing. After a while, chaos broke out, the students were murmuring to each other guessing how the fire got started. Suddenly the school Head Prefect, Kailey, turned towards Bailey and me, encouraging us to find out what had exactly happened. We assured them that we will do our best since Mr Billy has already given us the authority to investigate.
After school, Bailey and I entered the prom committee's meeting room and we sat down on one of those hard plastic chairs. The meeting started shortly and it was being conducted by Kaylie and she was being guided by Ms Goh, the teacher in charge of the committee. Kaylie asked in her usual loud voice about who had put up the posters about the prom. However, it was dead silent, if someone had dropped a needle then, everyone would have heard the sound of it hitting the ground.
"Well thank you Mr Invisible ghost for putting up the posters for us before we even got a theme for prom," Kaylie said, exasperated.
The mood immediately lightened up and everyone started laughing. Then, Kaylie asked for volunteers to go onto the podium and give suggestions for the theme. Chloe and Zoe, the twins, walked up and introduced their Hollywood theme and listed what props they needed inside the school gymnasium, which is where the prom will be held at. As they listed the props, I noticed that the price of the props will definitely be over the budget. Suddenly, I thought of a good theme for the prom. Bailey saw the look on my face and immediately knew that I had an idea. As soon as Chloe and Zoe finished talking, she pushed me forward to the podium to share my idea.
"Um. . ." I said hesitatingly, "my theme for the prom is A Starry Night." I became more confident, straightened my back and cleared my throat when I saw everyone sat up attentively when they heard what I had said. Bailey also gave me an encouraging smile to urge me to continue talking. "Imagine dancing or chilling out with your friends under the stars. I have a poster of a full moon at home and we can sell glow in the dark bracelets to raise funds to rebuild the auditorium . . ." I continued talking.
After I had finished my presentation, I went back to my seat and Bailey patted my back and commended me, saying that she loved my theme and hoped that most of the members would choose my theme. As there were no further contributions from any members, it was time to vote for the theme. It was almost unanimous! Everyone had voted for A Starry Night except for Chloe and Zoe. They looked angry and glared at me with dagger like eyes. To say that I was shocked was an understatement. Kaylie looked pleased as the props were within the budget and it teamed up as a fund-raising event to build back the auditorium. She ended the meeting and reminded the members to bring props that are related to the theme.
After the meeting, we went back to Bailey's house to investigate more. We sat on the sofa thinking of what had happened the previous day to try and find more clues. Suddenly, I remembered that Bailey had taken some photographs of the fire. Going through them might help make the investigation easier! I excitedly told this to Bailey but she sadly shook her head and said that she had already checked the photographs and none of them revealed any clues. This case will definitely be the hardest one yet! After going through a few more theories that we had, we were exhausted as none of them made sense and it made Bailey and I even more confused. We agreed that we would go home to rest and meet each other the next day to investigate further.
The following day, as I was walking to meet Bailey, I realized that we have not been examining our only actual clue, the poster that was urging the students to go to prom. I looked at it closer and was surprised to see some writing on the top left-hand corner. How could I be so careless and forgot about examining the only clue Bailey and I had? I ran to Bailey and showed it to her and I nearly burst out laughing when I saw her surprised face. We ran to Bailey's locker and took out the magnifying glass that we hid in a pouch under her sweater. I looked at the writing and nearly dropped the magnifying glass.
"What is it? Show it to me!" Bailey said excitedly, who could not wait to see what it said. Still in a trance, I gave it to her without saying anything. Bailey slowly read it out, "dance". So what? She probably wrote it there because people dance at prom. I sighed, shaking my head. The poster, being the only clue at first, had become multiple clues in one! 'All we had to do now is to tell Kaylie to ask the prom committee girls to write down a word in fancy writing and whatever matches this meant that that girl was the culprit. The fancy writing must have a heart inside the 'e' and must be a very nice cursive handwriting,' I thought to myself.
Since the locker room was getting crowded, I dragged Bailey to the toilet and made sure that no one was in the toilet before telling her what we should do to catch the culprit. Kaylie being the Head Prefect was instructed to tell everyone in the prom committee that she would be hosting an emergency meeting and reminded the members to bring the props for the prom. I prepared the whiteboard, markers and papers for the committee members to test their fancy handwritten words.
During the meeting, someone asked why Kaylie had pushed forward the meeting. Kaylie explained that because of the recent fire, we need more time and meetings to prepare for the prom. She also suggested that we need someone with fancy handwriting to redesign the poster. She wheeled out the whiteboard that I had gotten ready and distributed the whiteboard markers. The members wrote on the whiteboard the word 'dancer' and we notice that the handwriting on the poster matches Chloe's. As such, we suspected that Chloe could be the culprit who set fire to the auditorium. As we have prior to setup, informed Ms Goh about the fanciful handwriting, and she instructed me, Bailey and Chloe to report to Mr Billy's office. Zoe being the twin wanted to go along.
When Mr Billy interrogated Chloe and Zoe, they kept lying and denied that they had set up the fire. However, Mr Billy told them that he had security cameras and saw that they were the ones who had done it. Zoe and Chloe then broke down and confessed that they had done it because the auditorium was built on the cheerleading practice area and now, they had to practice in the dirty dance room. They admitted that they also thought that the sprinklers would have put the out fire leaving little damage. Zoe and Chloe were reprimanded and their parents were asked to meet Mr Billy in the afternoon.
As we are about to leave Mr Billy's office, I asked Mr Billy how he managed to see that it was Zoe and Chloe on the security cameras. He simply winked and smiled as he waited for the twins' parents.
