Peabo's First Days

Coming home from work one afternoon, I learned that mom and dad had left to adopt yet another dog to join our family. Somehow, mom managed to convince dad to take in one more dog because she wanted to have a dog named Peabo.

When they came home, the dog did not walk through the door like Izzy and Jack happened to do when they joined the family.

Instead, Peabo was carried carefully in my mom's arms into the house as both Izzy and Jack drew close to the tiny creature being held protectively.

It was obvious that he wasn't used to other dogs being curious, and with him being underweight, he was a bit protective of himself. He snapped at Jack first when he drew too close, drawing a growl from the larger dog. Izzy, being a rescue herself, backed away from the dog when he did it to her next.

During our first dinner with the new dog, I opted to hold Peabo and let everyone eat McDonald's first, knowing that the dog's behavior was unusual. Eventually, I was relieved to eat and I offered a bit of my burger to the pup, but he did not take it. Didn't mean he wasn't interested in the food mind you: he wanted to eat it, but he was afraid it would be taken from him.

This became apparent in the days after when he would take a few pieces of dog food into his mouth and carry it off to either the foyer (entryway) or near the dining room to eat the pieces.

After some time, he retreated to the box that my baby brother made a hole in so he could curl up and rest in there.

The next day, my younger brother came over to meet Peabo.

He had heard of the tiny dog's adoption, only instead of being rather nice about it, he asked rudely, "Where is the little rat?"

Upon seeing Peabo, he just cooed at him. Now, he thinks that the pup's annoying.

During Peabo's second night, he howled sadly, not used to the new living arrangements.

He didn't bark for the first time until a day or two later. When he realized that it was okay to be vocal, oh, he let us know.

We think he's nearsighted as well 'cause he'd bark at us, even when we're coming from another room or from the basement.

He used to steal underwear and socks for whatever reason. I learned of this one day when I had just removed my socks and the little thief ran off with them. I followed the little bandit right to where he was next to my dad, the socks under his body while he tried to tear them apart.

Anytime my baby brother sat in a chair, Peabo would jump up and lay on his chest, looking at him in the face like, "I'm gonna lick ya!"

Peabo doesn't do that anymore thankfully. However, he does make a habit of taking my dad's shorts and either dropping them off the bed or hides said shorts underneath his body so he can't get to them.

There are times that he also gets into playful fights with Izzy. Now the reason Izzy didn't growl or snap at Peabo is because she know she's bigger than he is, and technically, she has back-up in the form of Jack if Peabo gets a bit rowdy. Still, considering that she's heavier than Peabo, she can manage him fine.

Sadly for my dad though, both of them pretty much compete to be by him quite often.

There are other crazy things about him, but that's all for now.
