V - Hunting Evil 13 (Finale)
Rain stood in the shadows, watching the warehouse. It was old, and completely derelict. He fingered his gun, wanting to run pell-mell inside and just shoot Praew and be done with it. But the end had to support the means. This was a case he didn't want to lose, so he would never let anything taint the chain of evidence, knowing he would need every bit of it. Today was not the day for vengeance; it was the day for justice. Rain could feel his senses clogging at the overload of information that the warehouse and it's surroundings had. He remembered the one they had found in Chiang Mai, bursting in, only to find Yihwa in the throes of death. He could never forget Ple's scream of despair, her shattered soul represented by a keening wail that had brought tears to the eyes of the most hardened cop there.
He knew she was in there. While he couldn't feel her as such, he could sense the pain of her victims. He drew in a deep breath, knowing that she would be distracted, and that this would be the best time to talk to her. He made his way stealthily to the closest window, just to be able to see the best place from where he could enter. He could not shield his mind, so he had to look past everything, pull out from deep within, everything he could to protect himself. "Rainy, you need to learn to believe in yourself, and be what you are meant to be," he could hear his Yi whisper in his ears. He steeled himself and crept forward. He used to be called a cat in his unit, because no one could ever hear him approach until he was right next to them, often scaring his mates. He would get annoyed when they laughed at him, but this time, he was glad to be a cat. He needed to take Praew by surprise!
"Where the hell is he?" Phayu asked, out of his mind with worry. He had not wanted a partner for this very reason. Now, he was mortally afraid that he was going to lose Rain, who was not only his partner, but also the man he was falling in love with. They looked at everything they had in the conference room, other cops who were free joining them, to look for any crumbs Rain could have left behind. "How hard can it be?" Phayu thumped his hand on the table, making everyone jump, especially since the door of the room burst open and Ple rushed in, Saifah right behind her!
"Phi! Let me help! Please!" she said, standing in front of him. "How will you..?" Phayu trailed off when she touched his arm. "I will know. Just show me where he was working and on what, when you saw him last," she said, confidently. Sky immediately pointed towards the map and Rain's seat. Ple went and sat on it and closed her eyes for a few moments. She was not a strong clairvoyant like Rain, but her power was enough to read her brother's energy signature. She took in a deep breath and Phayu was reminded of his first day with Rain. His heart was in tatters; there was no way he was ready to lose his man. Ple opened her eyes and pointed at the map. "He is here," she said, unerringly pointing at the warehouse.
Everyone clustered around. "That is not even on the map," Pai said, opening his phone. "It's not on the current map, but the building still exists, or he wouldn't be there," Ple said. "Are you sure Ple?" Phayu asked. "Phi, when it comes to Rain, I will never utter a word until and unless I was a 100 percent sure," she said, looking straight into Phayu's eyes. Saifah watched as the despair in his brother's eyes changed to steely determination. He looked at Ple, simply unable to imagine that a junior resident, who had been his on his mind for a while now, was a psychic like him. Why hadn't Ple said anything? Then he remembered the way she was with, not only him, but with everyone, and he realised that maybe she chose to keep silent about it.
Phayu snapped out orders as he strapped on more weapons, as did Sky and Pai. Ple kept out of their way, watching the planned chaos in front of her with a calm that Saifah had to admire. Phayu was the first to leave the room, on a dead run, Pai and Sky close behind. They stopped half a kilometre from the warehouse, getting down from the vehicle. The other vehicles stopped behind theirs and the SWAT team spread out behind them. The LT of the team came upto Phayu. "So Phayu, status?" Mhok asked. "One of mine is in there," Phayu said, his worry rampant. "Is he a captive?" Mhok asked. "I don't know yet. He is my partner," Phayu said. Mhok looked at him in shock. Phayu was known to not like having a partner. Everyone had attended Sig's funeral, so it was no secret. But hearing Phayu made Mhok reevaluate.
"You need not worry about him. We will get everyone out. But Phayu, you cannot let it get personal. You hear me?" he asked. Phayu glared at Mhok, but they had known each other 15 years, right from their days at the academy. Mhok was not going to back down. They had a face off for all of 15 seconds before Phayu stepped back, knowing well that Mhok was capable of getting him off the scene. And he refused to leave without Rain. He stared at the warehouse, willing for Rain to just step out, but he knew he had to be patient. "Give me eyes and ears inside right away. Make sure you do not alert the people inside. One of ours may be in there, and the suspect is also a cop. Plus we have two civilians in there. Their safety is of paramount importance!" Mhok barked out orders, as his team moved into place.
"Praew," Rain said softly, a little startled at how his voice echoed in the cavernous space. The figure in front whirled around, knife raised, fury etched on her face. From what Rain could see, Khun Arthit was strapped down on a table, and his clothes were still intact, which meant Praew had not started on him yet. The journalist on the other hand, was slumped on a chair, her hair chopped off haphazardly, and looking like she had taken a beating. But she was still breathing, which meant Rain still had a chance. "Rain?" Praew looked surprised, and that's exactly what Rain wanted. "What are you doing here?" she asked, almost as if she was asking him the most casual question. She looked normal, until you didn't look into her eyes. The pupils were fully black, and madness writhed within. How had no one ever seen it?
"I am here to just talk to you," Rain said, with a calm he was not really feeling. But he knew reinforcements would come, he just had to hold on until then. If he could engage Praew, that would mean saving two lives. He knew he had to take that chance. "About what?" Praew asked, sounding like a kid who had been offered their favourite candy. "About anything you want?" Rain said, with his trademark gentle smile. Praew inched a little closer. She knew Rain, knew how sweet he was. He had been one of the few people at the Academy who had gone out of his way to stand for her. Rain didn't move, his body posture indicating that he was clearly not a threat.
"You want to talk to me?" Praew asked, sounding like the very thought was alien to her. Rain nodded. "Of course I want to talk to you. Is there even anyone here besides you?" he asked, letting instinct guide him. Praew looked back at the two figures there and then looked at Rain, realising the boy had not even looked away from her face. "Okay, let's talk," she said, taking another step forward. Rain had still not moved, not even flinched. "Can I tell you something?" he asked. She nodded. "My parents didn't want me either," he stated conversationally. She started at that, but continued to stare at him.
"I was the unwanted child. No one cared for me until my sisters came along. It hurt a lot when they told me that if I became a cop, they would have nothing to do with me anymore," he said, still looking at Praew and seeing how she was listening in rapt attention. "I was also bullied in school. People called me poor, and a freak. But I never let these things bother me. Sometimes, these are the things that shape our destiny," he said. "Why are you telling me this?" she asked. "Isn't that what happened to you too?" he said. Praew nodded thoughtfully. "I am a cop too," she said. "We take the oath to serve and protect Praew. Then why did you hurt so many people?" Rain asked. Praew's eyes filled with tears. "It's not me Rain! I swear it's not me," she moaned in pain, rocking with her arms around her own torso. "Then who is it?" Rain asked, taking a step closer. "I don't know! I don't know! I don't know!" she began chanting.
"Ears and eyes are up!" Mhok shouted as Phayu, Pai and Sky rushed forward. Mhok had allowed them also to gear up with the SWAT team, knowing Phayu was not one to leave a man behind. The sight that met their eyes chilled them to the bone. Rain was standing in front of Praew, whose keening wail of sorrow curdled their blood. "Try to think Praew. Why did you hurt them? Who told you to hurt them?" Rain was asking. "He.. he.. he said I could change! Change! I am changing Rain! Not Praew! I am not Praew. He said I can be more! More! He can make me better than anyone!" Praew was clutching her head now and rocking back and forth, clearly in pain. "Is he speaking to you now?" Rain asked. Praew nodded, still crying, loud sobs that echoed all around. "What is he saying Praew?" Rain asked gently. Praew still had the knife, and he inched closer, wanting to take it out of her hands, so that she would not hurt herself.
Phayu watched in horror as all of a sudden Praew stilled and an unearthly silence filled the room. Her pupils dilated to black again, but this time, even her irises turned black, as something oppressive filled the air. Those outside also felt the impact, the slight breathlessness that accompanied the lack of oxygen. If they were feeling this way, how was Rain holding up? "Praew?" they heard Rain ask, as he stepped closer again. Praew raised the hand holding the knife and screamed, making their hair stand on end. "Don't come closer!" she shouted as she stepped back, fury swirling around her. "Mhok!! What are we waiting for?" Phayu whisper shouted and stepped up. Mhok put his hand on Phayu's arm.
"Don't! Look!" he said, gesturing with his head. Phayu, Pai and Sky looked up. Rain had almost reached up to Praew, who was standing over Arthit. Arthit struggled, now fully awake, trying to break out of his bonds. Praew brought the knife down with a scream just as Rain caught it and they both began to struggle. Phayu rushed in, the SWAT team hot on his heels. The team moved to rescue Arthit and the journalist, moving out with them just as Praew swung Rain around and put the knife on his neck, her eyes mad. Phayu was about to rush forward when Pai pulled him back. "Stay back! Stay back!" Praew screamed, brandishing the weapon around, her hand locked around Rain's neck. But what surprised them was that Rain stood their without moving, the look of pain on his face was chilling.
Phayu looked at nothing and no one but Rain, his eyes locked on his lover's. "Praew, you know you don't have to do this," Rain said, stroking her hand, even though his eyes were on Phayu's. He could see the fear in them, but he wouldn't allow that to distract him. "I have to! I have to! He promised I can change!" Praew shouted and raised the knife to bring it down, just as Rain nodded and shifted infinitesimally. Phayu immediately took a shot and the knife clattered to the floor, as Praew also fell, screaming in pain. Phayu rushed to Rain and pulled him clear as Pai and Sky quickly cuffed Praew, and led her out, screaming and kicking.
"What the fuck were you thinking?" Phayu said, shaking Rain, ignoring the strange looks they were getting from everyone around them. "Phi, I just wanted to ask her why she did it," Rain replied. Phayu glared at him, not even fooled a bit. "Rain, if something had happened today, you know they could have said you tampered with the evidence for personal vendetta," Phayu said, sighing. "I never pulled out my gun Phi, and never touched her," Rain said. "And do you think when push came to shove, would anyone believe that?" Phayu asked. "Phi, she wouldn't have walked away from this either ways," Rain said, his shattered heart clearly visible in his eyes.
Epilogue, 3 weeks later:
Rain and Ple stood in front of Yihwa's head stone, flanked by Phayu, Pai, Sky and surprisingly Saifah, which had made Phayu quirk a brow, but his brother only shrugged, earning a smirk, knowing there would questions asked later. They all laid a pink tulip each, apparently Yihwa's favourite flower, on the grave after Rain and Ple had cleared the dust and old flowers with their hands. Yihwa Suwannarat, 23rd January, 1995-19th March, 2018. Friend, Sister, Guide, Beloved. The mood was sombre, but there was still a kernel of joy blooming within. "We will wait for you there," Phayu said, and Rain and Ple nodded gratefully.
"Yi, we did it. Rain found her. Although she was declared clinically unfit to stand trial, she will never be able to hurt anyone anymore," Ple said, tears trickling down unchecked. Rain drew her close. "Yi, I delivered my promise. But I still have to tell you, I hate it that you were hurt. You deserved to live. I don't know why you did it, but I really hope you can rest in peace now. And remember, we love you, okay?" Rain said, wiping his own tears. They both turned around as someone called Rain's name. "P'Luke?" Ple asked, looking shocked, as they both walked upto the man. He was clearly distraught, and hugged them both as soon as they reached him, earning glares from Phayu and Saifah.
"P'Luke, what are you doing here?" Ple asked, as they drew back. "I heard Yihwa's killer was caught in Bangkok. I knew you both would come back. So I took a chance," Luke replied. Rain turned to the others. "Everyone, this is P'Luke, Yihwa's faen. P'Luke, this is my team from SVU, P'Phayu, my LT, P'Pai and P'Sky, my seniors and this is P'Saifah, Ple's senior at work," Rain introduced everyone and they all shook hands. "I am glad to meet you all," Luke smiled, then turned to Rain and Ple. "Yihwa asked me to give you something whenever you guys came back here," he said. "What?" Ple asked. Luke pulled out an envelope from his pocket and gave it to them. "I don't know what it says, but she was specific of the date I give it to you. She said that today, at this time, I would find you here, and I must do it then," he added. Rain and Ple looked at each other in shock. Luke soon left, and the two of them sank down on the steps leading to the cemetery and opened the envelope, holding each other tight.
My beloveds Rain and Ple,
You both hold my heart and my soul, and I know that you must be angry and upset with me for not telling you what could come to be. But you both know how the future can be. Rain, she wanted you, never me. She wanted you for the beautiful light inside you. But I knew, if you were gone, there was no one else who could bring her to justice. You needed to be out there in the world, because you could find her. I need you to stop feeling guilty and start living your life.
I told P'Bun that you needed to go to Bangkok, both of you. Your destinies lay there, and mine.. I couldn't see mine. That is how I knew it was not you, but me. Don't blame me both of you, and promise me that you both will live a life filled with love and joy. Keep each other as safe as you are able to, because together, you both are stronger. I will never leave you. I will keep watch over you from the stars and I will guide you as best as I can.
Rainy, Ple, my babies, you have found your path, and your acceptance, and love, and I believe the best is yet to come. I love you both forevermore,
Your beloved,
Yihwa.
Rain and Ple wiped their tears as they stood up. Phayu watched as Rain carefully folded the letter and put it in his pocket. "Let's go guys. It's time to move on," he said, as they both turned and looked at Yihwa's grave one last time, finally stepping away, everyone surrounding them. It was time for a new journey to begin!
