Chapter 44 Dinah (15)
It was the cool of the day, and I decided to go for a walk around the house, but within eye distance so that if I ran into trouble someone could help as there was always someone outside doing something during the daylight hours. I had decided to stretch my legs as I had been cooped up all afternoon in my room doing very little as I was fretting over my engagement.
Although I had heard rumours' of Job, and his statement that he had made a contract with his eyes that he would lust after no woman, I could not help but be worried. What if he took me without consent like Shem had? Or would he listen to me and my needs and wants? I was not sure that l could handle not being listened too. I had stayed away from most men after my previous marriage, not wanting to find myself in the same situation. My eldest brothers being the most protective of me since, only easing up in the last few years as I no longer went to town with my face uncovered. The only place I had my face uncovered was around the home.
Having decided to walk, I covered my face over as I was not going to be close to the house like I had been earlier when I had been playing with Tamar's children. I had been caught offguard already once today when I had met Job, and I did not want another instance, I set out.
I was happily walking when I noticed a man exiting our house and it looked like our paths were going to cross. My heart started racing, when I saw it was Job, my new husband. I tried to calm myself by saying to myself, "He is a Godly man, there is no evil in his reputation, he will not harm me nor even look at me with lust." but it did not help, so I was about to turn away so our paths did not cross, but Job noticed me.
"Is that you Dinah?" he called out.
I turned back and nodded, "Yes, it is me. Can I help you?"
"Yes, I forgot to give you something when we agreed to marry," he said as he continued to walk an even pace towards me. I was somewhat relieved, as had he hurried, I think I would have bolted.
"What is that?" I wondered, "Please forgive me, but how come you are leaving so late?"
He smiled a charming smile at my curiousity, "I was arranging purchase of breeding stock for our future. You may not know, but I lost everything to a trial from God and when the trial was over my friends and family all gave me gold and silver to buy stock with, but I had yet to buy them. It was Esau that suggested to me I approach your father for a bride since I had lost mine in that time. I originally was not going to listen to him, however, I changed my mind, as I felt like God really wanted me to ask Jacob for a wife."
Seeing my alarm at that, he hurried on to say, "This was before I had met you that first time with your nephew. Anyway this is for you, to remind you that I have promised you I will come for you. I will be back in a year." He showed me a pretty emerald set ring.
"A year?" I asked stupidly, shocked that it sounded like he would leave me that long without seeing me.
"Yes, it will take me that long to recover some of my previous losses. God has promised to bless me, so I am choosing to believe in his promise," he took my hands in his, and I could feel that he had worked honestly before, "Can you wait that long?"
I nodded, still hesitant.
"You seem worried," he stated, looking concerned.
"It's just my first experience of marriage was not great," I admitted, "so I am nervous."
His look changed to one of sympathy, "I will do nothing to hurt you Dinah. If you want me to wait I will wait, but for now you will have to wait and for that I am truly sorry," and he put the ring on my finger and left without further words.
I did not understand what he meant by what he said, until he had come for me after a year and brought me to his tent.
He was true to his word, he respected my boundaries and did not touch me until I approached him, and he stopped when I froze from hesitancy. It took me time, but eventually my trust in him was won over.
The Lord blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.
Together we had seven sons and three daughters. The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job's daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.
Drought came upon the land and Job was blessed despite this. The land in which we lived was the last to be affected by the drought, even my father had sent to Egypt for grain. At some point it was found that Joseph was alive and equal to Pharaoh in status. He invited us all to go down to Egypt and live in the land of Goshen, which we did for 5 years before Job and I returned.
It was in this time in Egypt I discovered my daughter to Shem had been adopted by Photipah and when she was grown she had been married off to my brother Joseph, and they had 2 children - Ephraim and Manasseh, Ephraim being the youngest, but blessed by my father as the oldest. I was just thankful my daughter had found her place within the family, through Gods blessing. I did not tell her though, I just treated her as I did Tamar, until we left to go back to Uz.
After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so Job died, an old man and full of years.
