Chapter 38 The Unknown Princess (16)
I was up bright and early the next day organising the room so that it was suitable for me to be there. I set up lattice barriers in the corner of the room, with flowers, potted plants and white gauzy material to make the division more attractive. I also got to cooking food to serve and organised drink canisters that we could pour out of easily if the men got thirsty.
I also organised a few chairs to lie on should the men suffer from vertigo while listening to Solomon teaching them. I found it odd how the teacher sat and the students stood for their lessons, but I guess it meant the students could move freely if they were starting to drift off.
I had everything ready by the time Solomon started his lesson, and I was waiting in the corner ready to serve the men as they came for refreshments. Initially, the men were shocked to see the cordoned off area - this was unheard of but Solomon glossed over it.
"Good afternoon young men of Jerusalem," Solomon said sitting down.
"Good afternoon Solomon," they replied.
"As you can see, I have arranged for part of this room to be cordoned off so that when you start to feel a bit hungry or thirsty you can go get refreshments. For those that suffer from vertigo my wife has thoughtfully provided a couple of daybeds for you to recover on and still hear the lesson. You are not to talk if you go there, but you can sign what you want and she will serve you. Now are there any questions about this?"
They must have all shook their heads as I did not hear a thing till Solomon said, "Right now lets get on with the lesson. Knowledge is of more value than gold, after all." earning him a few chuckles. He continued on "Happy is the man that finds wisdom, and the man that gets understanding. For the merchandise of wisdom is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof better than fine gold. Wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing can be compared unto obtaining her." the next few hours he basically repeated himself in different ways regarding how important wisdom was and how she could bless their lives if they sought after her.
I had never thought of wisdom being a she, but I did know I wanted her after hearing Solomon speak. I wondered how I, a lowly woman could obtain her, but my thoughts were interrupted as the first of his students snuck around and indicated for me to serve him. After that serving people was steady. Solomon wrapped up not long after as he could see all his students attentions wondering. "Thank you all for coming today, I will be asking you questions next week on what I have talked to you about today, so go over what I have said."
A couple of the men hurried off, I suppose to write down what Solomon had said before they forgot it, I did not know, all I knew was I was now serving everyone who did not eat during the lesson, including Solomon, who took the time to come over and said, "Thank you Amari for this food. You are altogether beautiful, my darling, there is no flaw in you."
I could not help but blush at his praise, I was going to object, but eyes were upon us so I stayed silent. "Silence is the beginning of wisdom," Solomon whispered in my ear as if he knew I was going to object to his praise.
I just nodded. Solomon left not long after as he still had much to do being king. Some of the men floated around for awhile enjoying the refreshments, but eventually they left as the food ran out. A couple of them thanked me for my service and they hoped to see me again the following week as the stand was a life saver! I cleaned up then and headed back to our room.
When I arrived at our room, I collapsed on the bed, totally drained. I must have drifted off to sleep as I woke to "Amari! Are you alright my love?"
"I am fine!" I said as I sleepily got up, "Why what is the matter?"
"I did not see you at dinner, and when I came here you were asleep. Mina and Abigail said they had not seen you at all, so I worried." Solomon explained his concern.
"I missed dinner?" I asked, not very brightly.
"You did," Solomon nodded, "I brought you some food in case you were hungry..."
"Thank you!" I said looking around the room for the food Solomon had mentioned, "I am starving! Where is the food?"
"Here," smiled Solomon at my enthusiasm and moved aside so that I could now see the lamp table behind him. It was laden with simple foods. "I did not know what you wanted, and you were sick yesterday, so I just got simple food that is filling and easy on your stomach."
"Thank you Solomon!" I was touched by his thoughtfulness, "Would you say thanks for the meal?"
So he did. As soon as he finished his blessing, I demolished the food he had brought, I was starving.
