Chapter 19 Bathsheba (4)
I was excited to find out that I was pregnant, though not overly happy about throwing up every morning. Uriah's mother "Shivigger" [Mother-in-law] was the first to suspect, and had questioned me about it privately.
"Bathsheba, dear, I notice you are sick a lot in the mornings. Could it be that you are pregnant?"
Having never been pregnant before I replied, "I honestly do not know, Shvigger, it is possible though." I blushed as it was not a secret as to how much Uriah wanted me and I wanted him, but even so it was not something that I was comfortable talking about, especially with my mother-in-law.
"When was your last period then, dear?" Shivigger asked me.
I thought back to when it last was and I realised it was just before our wedding week, which was 2 months ago!
"It was 2 months ago, Shvigger," I finally answered, "Just before we got married."
"Oh! Praise God! Such a blessing!" Shvigger started dancing, drawing me into her dance.
I must have looked confused, as she then explained, "Bathsheba, you are definitely pregnant!"
I smiled in happiness, thinking that Uriah would be pleased. I was thinking on how to tell him, when Shvigger stopped and looked at me seriously.
"You must not tell Uriah yet!" she warned me seriously.
"What! Why?" the question burst from my lips as I was horrified to keep anything from my husband.
"Because you are still in the period where you could miscarry. It is better to protect your husband from such things, I assure you on that." The haunted look in her eyes convinced me, if nothing else did. I guessed that she had shared a miscarriage with her husband and that the conversation had not gone overly well.
Uriah's parents were a happy example of what a long marriage could be like, but it was obvious to me now that they had problems at some point in their marriage and that those problems were overcome.
It mattered to me that I followed his mother's advice as she was a lovely person. It also would have made things uncomfortable since they were living downstairs in our house. Well technically it was the family home. Uriah's parents and younger siblings lived downstairs and Uriah and I lived upstairs, we also had a semi enclosed upper balcony which was higher than anything around except the palace.
The palace really only had a couple of windows that faced our upper balcony so the family tended to wash up there as no one used that part of the palace according to Uriah, I trusted him in this. Even so we had screens we would put up for privacy when we were doing this, otherwise we left the area open so we could catch the breeze blowing up there. I am digressing here, though.
I listened to Shivigger and did not tell Uriah, instead I hugged the secret to myself. One day Shivigger and I were chuckling over my pregnancy in a conspiratorial way and Uriah caught us.
"Bathsheba!" Uriah looked at me directly, expecting a honest answer, "What are you two giggling over?"
I glanced at his mother and she nodded her ok, it was not quite the right time, but it was important we kept our relationship strong by not lying to each other. I could not lie if he asked a direct question anyway.
"Well?" he asked getting a bit impatient.
"Uriah, I..." I start and freeze up with the look in his eyes.
His mother, upon seeing the look he was giving me, and seeing how I had frozen rescued me from replying, "Uriah, honey, Bathsheba is pregnant." He looked at his mother with annoyance until he heard that I was pregnant. With this he looked at me with wonder, "Is this true, Bathsheba? I am going to be a father?"
I nodded, relieved that the secret was out.
Pure joy filled his face then and he picked me up and spun me around, laughing "We are going to be parents Bathsheba!"
I wrapped my arms around him and laughed with him, him that he was going to be a father and I because he was so pleased. It was adorable.
I was about 3 months pregnant at that point, I still was not showing but I noticed my breasts were starting to change, they were growing bigger and heavier and sorer. Shivigger advised me that this was normal, Uriah seemed delighted with the changes that were occurring to me.
In away I was relieved as I definitely had more of a sex drive now, I was pregnant and I kept looking to him to relieve my needs, which he did most admirably. All most always afterward he would either kiss my belly where our child was growing or leave his hand on my belly as if to feel for the child within.
While I was pregnant, Uriah had been called by David to go to war, he excused himself as he wished to be there for our child's birth. He said to me though that the next time he would have to go as he felt responsible to David and Israel. Uriah was technically a Warrior Rabbi, as his father was a respected Rabbi. They were Levites of the clan that were responsible for carrying the Ark of the covenant when it needed to be moved.
Once the ark of the covenant had been returned by David to Jerusalem; it no longer needed to be moved, as it was being held at the place where the temple was to be built.
