Chapter 16 Dinah (6)
The lion was clearly very heavy to drag, but Shem did his best to hide this fact. He was all smiles and jokes. I guess he was trying his best to distract me from the discomfort in my hand.
"Look Dinah! There's your brothers!" Shem eventually said to me spying them from the distance. He walked a little way's closer then excused himself, "Sorry DInah, I have to leave you here this lion is heavier than I initially thought. I will wait here to ensure that you get to your brother's safely before I head home."
"Thanks Shem for seeing me this far and thanks for rescuing me from that Lion," I twisted my hair nervously with a nervous smile I said good bye.
"Anything for a daughter of Israel," Shem smiled, balanced a pole on his hip, reached over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear and trailed his finger down my cheek leaving tingles in their wake.
I chuckled nervously and turned and hurried off to my brothers. When my brothers had spotted me, I turned and waved goodbye to Shem. True to his word he had watched over me until my brothers had spotted me. While he was waiting he had put down the lion on the ground, while I was watching he bent down, picked up the lion and started towards his home.
I turned back and called out to my brothers. Simeon must have known I was in pain as he dropped what he was doing and ran to me. "Are you ok Dinah?" He asked me.
I burst into tears then and threw myself onto my brother. "I nearly died, Simeon." I blubbered.
"What? What do you mean you nearly died?" Simeon asked panicked, "Did Schecem do something to you?"
I shook my head, "No Schecem saved me if anything."
"Dinah, you need to watch him. He is not of our people and he clearly wants you. What do you mean he saved you? Saved you from what?"
"He saved me from a mountain lion. I did what you said and punched him in the face. I think my hand is broken though." I showed him my now splinted hand.
"Oh Dinah!" Simeon sighed, "Lets get you home!"
"Not yet, I have to deliver this to you and our brothers," I showed him the heavy pot of food.
Simeon laughed at me, "Only you would think of food at a time like this." but he took the pot and gave it to Levi before turning back to me and taking my hand and heading home.
"Where are you going Simeon?" Levi asked.
"I am taking Dinah home, apparently she got attacked by a lion and is now sporting a broken hand. I want to get her home to our healers asap," explained Simeon foregoing his food in his worry over me.
"Ok, hurry back though. If there is one lion about there will be others. We will need to alternate our watch at night now we know this."
"I know, I will be back as soon as I am sure Sunshine is safe and looked after," Simeon replied as he left them behind to supervise the sheep and goats.
Simeon and I chatted on the way home, I can't really remember about what. I think it was just an effort on his part to distract me from the deep aching pain in my arm, "Make sure you mix in some tumeric with your food, Dinah," Simeon said when he got me home. "If you like I will eat it with you." Seeing my reluctance at following his advice, Simeon was not a medicine man or woman after all.
I nodded my acceptance and went to the kitchen to grab what leftovers were there for us, whilst Simeon went off to find our tribes healer.
When he returned the small meal was ready. There was not much over as I had taken most of the food with me, planning to eat with my brothers before returning home. As it was I was up for a lecture about leaving the pot with them. Simeon would probably intervene on my behalf, as it was not my fault a lion attacked me.
To my surprise Simeon was right, Tumeric did help ease the pain. Our healer looked over my hand and complimented the first aid that Schecem had done, but adjusted it so that it was both more comfortable and more usable for when I absolutely needed it. "Keep this splint on for 6 weeks." the healer instructed me, "I will come weekly to change your bandages and re set the splint. You can bathe then too. I suggest as much bed rest as possible as any movement could disrupt the bone and make it heal incorrectly."
"Yes sir!" I agreed, "Would you mind telling my parents this? I do not want them to think me lazy!"
"I will," agreed the healer, "Simeon, you have heard, let your brothers know too. I know they like to rough up DInah too."
"I will!" promised Simeon as he saw the healer out of my room in the tent. As he left he said to me, "I will be back later, I will try keep you entertained while you are in confinement."
"Thanks Simeon, I appreciate that," I nodded my thanks as I flopped back onto the cushions to rest. I thought it would be a boring 6 weeks, but it turned out not as boring as I thought.
