Ultimate Green Machine
PROMPT: By @WattpadFairytales You inherit an old carpet from your grandmother. It's been in your family forever. Then you discover it can fly!
"My grandmother loved this carpet. It's been in the family forever," I explained to Billy as we stretched it out on the grass.
Billy twitched his end out. "It's really ugly. It's too bad she didn't leave you money we could have put towards the mortgage."
I shrugged. "Let's give it a good rinse, then we'll lay it on the picnic table. It'll have all day to dry in the sun."
While I wait for the hose, I crawl onto the carpet and trace the intricate designs with my hand. Now that I really looked, other than being dusty, it was in surprisingly good condition for something so old. I'd have expected frayed edges and at least a few tassels half-undone.
Gently brushing one hand over the surface, I said, "You really are beautiful. I'd love to see all the places you've seen in your life."
"No way!" Billy says from nearby. I glance over in time to see the hose fall from his hands. His eyes are wide with shock. "Beth, you're flying!"
I give a laugh, then shriek when I look down and see that I'm hovering two feet off the ground. "Oh my God!"
I try to grab onto the carpet, but there aren't any handles. My fingers just pull though the thick pile. So I throw myself flat and hang on to the edges.
"Let me down!" I wail and bury my face in the dusty fibres.
Without any sensation of movement, the carpet rests gently on the ground.
As soon as I'm earthbound, I roll to my side and off.
Billy drops down beside me. In slow-motion we turn our heads to look at each other.
"Babe, do you know what this means?" Billy asks.
I shake my head. I've just discovered that the old carpet my family has been handing down for generations can fly! My brain kind of got stuck on that fact.
A gleeful grin breaks out on Billy's face. "We don't have to pay for airfare anymore! So we can take every vacation we've ever wanted, because all we have to pay is hotel and food!"
My mind trips forward and finally digests what my hubby is saying.
"Yes!" I scream and hold my hand up for a high-five. "This is the ultimate in eco-tourism!"
Billy high-fives me. "We've got vacation time in two months. Let's go plan!"
I put a hand on his arm because the mother-lode of ideas just occurred to me. "Let's figure out how fast can we fly because... weekend trip!"
"Yes!" we yell and break into a victory dance.
