So Much Joy

PROMPT:  By @WattpadDarkFantasy  A prince or princess was imprisoned in a tower at a very young age, never being allowed freedom. They are visited one night by a dark creature who promises their freedom...for a price.

"Do you see him?" the fairy, Belladonna, said in a voice that brought images of the wind sighing through a field of wildflowers.

A knight mounted on a warhorse rode from a break in the trees at the head of the valley. He paused briefly then set his sights on the tower and made his way forward.

"How do you know he's my true love?" said Princess Lisbeth. Imprisoned and isolated since she was five, the promise of someone who'd relieve her desperate loneliness by never leaving made her heart soar in elation.

"My father Oberon has many gifts," replied the fairy mysteriously. A truth that had nothing to do with the bald-faced lie Belladonna had told the knight to lure him here. Human hearts were so fickle and easily swayed to her own ends.

Too bad Oberon wasn't and had banished her for threatening the Witch Queen to learn the secret of this tower.

The fairy leaned into the woman. "If you agree to give me just a few things, I'll break the spell keeping you here so you can go to him. Never be alone again. Wouldn't that be wonderful?"

Lisbeth panted in her excitement. "Yes! Take whatever you need."

Belladonna held up an ironwood thorn. "First a little prick of your finger."

"Ouch!" cried Lisbeth, but Belladonna held her finger fast to squeeze out drops of blood that she rubbed over her tiny feet and hands and through her dandelion-fluff-like hair.

"Do you agree Lisbeth to change places with me? Allow the magic that has met your every need to now serve only me?"

"Yes!" Lisbeth cried, watching the knight slowly get closer.

"Do you agree to give me all of your joy?" Belladonna said as she wound one of Lisbeth's hairs around herself.

"My...what?" Lisbeth dragged her eyes back to the fairy.

"You will be so happy with him!" Belladonna said, pointing at the handsome knight. "Your joy is a small thing to be with the one you love. One who will stay with you for the rest of your life."

"But..."

"Imagine the beautiful babies you'll have with him! Don't you want to have children of your own?"

Lisbeth gasped, "More than anything!"

"Then agree and go to him!"

At the visions of chubby, laughing babies, Lisbeth cried, "Yes! I agree!"

It took only moments for Belladonna to mutter the incantation that transported Lisbeth to the forest floor, yards away from the knight.

Relaxing back in the window, Belladonna sighed as Lisbeth's joy began to flow into her.

Below, Lisbeth glanced up in confusion at Belladonna. When the knight dismounted and addressed her, Lisbeth's smile faltered, her usual bright-eyed happiness missing.

Belladonna laughed darkly and held out her hand which the Tower magically filled with a goblet of chilled dandelion wine.
