Roommate
PROMPT: By @WattpadCreepypasta You find the perfect apartment in the perfect neighbourhood. The problem is, after you move in, you discover someone or something is in there with you.
"I love this place!" I happily spun in a circle in the middle of the large studio apartment that I'd scored.
The previous tenant had lived here for almost sixty years! In the best neighbourhood and only a five-minute walk from my office, I certainly didn't plan on moving anytime soon, either.
For no other reason than feeling exuberant, I said aloud, "I'm going to order pizza!" and headed across to the coffee table and my phone.
The distinct tip-tap-tapping sound of fast-paced steps followed behind me.
I spun around. Heart racing and hair standing on end, my eyes darted around the empty room.
"Must have been someone upstairs." I giggled nervously, unconvinced.
For the last three days I'd focused on unpacking. I hadn't explored the roof yet. Maybe someone was walking around up there. Except I think I remember seeing the rooftop door padlocked.
"No, I'm just tired from moving and my unpacking marathon. And hungry. Pizza. Focus on pizza."
Hours later, sated on the half-pie I'd devoured, I crawled into bed. Sleep began to overcome me quickly.
The neon sign of the cinema across the street cast just enough light through the blinds to dimly illuminate my apartment, allowing me to see everything from the corner where I'd placed my bed.
I sighed happily. It was perfect --
Shooting upright in bed, I stared hard at my sofa.
I'd swear on a stack of bibles something just moved there.
My mind replayed the footsteps from earlier I - thought - I'd heard.
I gasped when the leaves of the fern beside my sofa swayed slightly.
Then the curtain I had hung on the sidewall to section off my bedroom area moved like a hand was being dragged along it. A hand at a very low height.
"No! No! No!" I chanted.
I pulled the comforter up closer to my chin. A whimper of fear escaped me when something pulled on it.
Pushing back into the headboard, I yanked on the comforter. Something thudded to the floor.
I snapped on the bedside lamp. My heart thumped erratically.
It took two big gulps before I could look over the side of the bed.
Nothing.
I breathed out a sigh of relief.
A shriek escaped me when I felt something - invisible! - land on the end of the bed.
I watched, frozen in horror, as small depressions made their way up the bed. Then the small feet and weight of a tiny invisible body walked up my body.
"Please, no...." I begged, tears streaming down.
A tiny cold hand, like porcelain, brushed the tears from one cheek, then petted my bangs gently. "Don't cry," a squeaky voice said. "You're my best friend. We'll be together forever now."
