More Than

PROMPT: By @adultfiction  Your main character escaped an abusive relationship years ago. Now the ex is back and stalking.

The home intruder alarm starts beeping on my phone. I quickly bring up the video and don't bother to hide the wicked grin that curls my lips.

I'm not sure if I hoped this day would come or not. Either way, it's here, because my psycho ex-boyfriend Hank has broken into my house and is prowling around.

How he found me is a mystery. How I'll deal with him is not.

Before going in the house, I pick up the cut glass vase of begonias he left on my front porch and toss them in the trash.

I know from my security system that Hank is currently watching me through the front window. While waiting for me today, he rifled through my belongings and proceeded to make himself at home eating my food and drinking the very expensive coffee I developed a taste for when I was stationed overseas.

Hank wouldn't have any clue about all that though.

Or any idea how to identify my state-of-the-art security system only another expert could pick out or get by.

As I open the door, I grin widely knowing it would take someone highly trained in mixed martial arts, as well as the various skills you learn in the military, to come close to having a chance at taking me down.

After I left Hank, I saw that Jennifer Lopez movie Enough and took it to heart. The trainer I hired told me not to take revenge, but be prepared. He also advised joining the military to hide out.

Since I was living in a women's shelter at the time, I decided that was pretty sage advice. I had no clue how to get a new identity, and I always sucked at hide and seek. Besides, getting paid to learn to defend myself sounded great, and Hank wasn't imaginative or resourceful enough to think of looking for me on an army base.

So, with all that behind me, I danced out of the way of the bat I'd seen him holding on my camera before quickly relieving him of it.

His moment of surprise at my moves let me grab his wrist and twist it behind his back, immobilizing him. He grunted in pain and snarled out a nasty name.

"Tsk tsk, Hank. That's not a nice thing to say. You have the right to remain silent," I began and thrills shot through me when he froze in surprise as I continued.

I'd let him ask me questions later about how I, meek, feeble little me, became a cop.

For now, I just relished reading this piece of garbage his rights as I heard my fellow officers pull up.
