Good For You

PROMPT:  By @Foodkart  You are the hated brussel sprouts. This is your chance to tell the world how they've hurt your feelings.

Dear everyone who goes 'blech!' at brussel sprouts,

This letter is for you. All you who spout healthy eating rhetoric, yet pass us over in the grocery store. All of you who think you are eating superfoods, but don't include us on your list. Any of you who think 'green vegetable' and don't envision our lovely little round selves amongst the leaves on your plate.

For years we've heard, "Ewww, brussel sprouts!" or "They look like funny little cabbages."

Well, you know what? We don't say anything about any of you. We take you all as you come. Anyone is welcome to include us in their meals. We are an equal opportunity vegetable.

For anyone who says "They taste gross!"... WELL, you just haven't tried hard enough, have you?

Why not boil us, then fry us up in some nice tasty butter and turkey rashers? Sprinkle some delicious parmesan cheese over us? Or just let us swim in yummy scrummy cheese sauce? Come on, pretty much everything is better with cheese sauce.

If you can't be bothered with boiling or sauces, then fire up the oven, sprinkle on some oil, salt and pepper and roast us. We love basking in the warmth.

The list of ways to cook and dress us is pretty much endless. Balsamic vinegar. Garlic. Honey. Boil. Fry. Bake. Stuff us in something.

Surprise! Surprise! Since we have such a low calorie count, how you dress us is really all you need to worry about that way.

It's your imagination that is lacking if you don't know how to cook us meek little brussel sprouts. Or maybe it's your courage?

What about you people who won't even TRY us? Seriously. Is that any way to go through life? We could be the best thing since sliced bread, and you'd go to your grave never knowing.

We haven't even discussed how healthy we are. You profess to care about your body? Then why aren't we on your plate at least once a week? We are chock full of vitamin K and C, fiber, and small amounts of lots of other vitamins that your body needs. Don't forget our low calorie count!

So, let's review: full of good stuff, filling from our high fibre count, low calories, beneficial for your gut.

What do you say? Going to put us on the list this week? Give us a spin on the plate?

We know we can be good friends.

Looking out for your health,

Brussel Sprouts

P.S. We'll tell you one thing: We wouldn't tell anyone they couldn't be our friend and exclude them. Does that make us the bigger veggie in the patch? We'll let you chew on that awhile.
