Crushing
PROMPT: By @WattpadAfterDark Write a first person scene where you finally reveal your long time crush to the person.
My heart hammered as I followed my best friend into my apartment. Her perfume trailed behind her, intoxicating me like always.
I'd resolved to finally tell her my feelings. I'd always chickened out before.
Not today.
Finally, both of us single. I had to take this golden opportunity and run with it.
Out of the narrow hallway, I slung an arm around her shoulders to hug her and led her to the kitchen.
She slumped on a stool and said, "I give up on relationships."
I couldn't have asked for a better opening.
"Cerise, let me point out how to identify the right person for you."
I opened the fridge and snagged her favourite smoothie that I always had on hand. "Number one, they remember what you like."
Twisting off the cap I handed it over. She smiled and took a grateful swig.
"Second, they'll listen to the music you like," I pressed the remote's pre-programmed button to start her favourite jazz station. I grimaced, "Even if they don't like it."
She snickered. It was one of our many long-standing jokes that I'd die of boredom listening to jazz.
"Look for someone who's seen you at your worst, like when you went bonkers on Mary Price's car when you found out she'd slept with your boyfriend."
Cerise pressed a hand to her forehead. "I'm so lucky she didn't press charges!"
"That's because I set her up with Carl Peters." I nod at her gasp. "And number four: Find someone who'll keep your deepest, darkest secrets, and still love you despite knowing them."
She gave me a tight smile. I'd seen her weep in shame and embarrassment at stuff she'd done. Stuff she often said she prayed no one ever found out. Except me. I knew it all.
"You need someone who is ready to listen whenever you need to unload. Like I have every time you go spinning out of control or one of your boyfriends puts you through the wringer. Also, someone willing to catch you when you fall."
"You're always there for me."
I smiled at her. "We support each other. Count on each other. Respect each other. We're awesome together. We're a team."
I took a deep breath. Here goes.
"Cerise, I know Dougal put you through the wringer. He was a creep. But he can be the last one you ever date," I rounded the kitchen island and walked close to her knees. She looked slightly confused when I picked up her hand with one of mine and brushed the other down her cheek. "If you'll give me a chance."
