Bejewelled

PROMPT: by   @WattpadShortStory   - You start at an exciting new job, but you are shocked when you realise what the company really does behind closed doors.

My new boss slid the non-disclosure agreements into an envelope. "I'll show you where you'll be working."

"Terrific!"

I felt a bit dorky at how I practically leapt out of my chair, but this was my dream job. I was going to be growing diamonds!

"You'll be working in a separate division from the main floor."

My smile fell a bit.

"Your particular expertise and background in your parents jewellery story make you a perfect candidate for the position."

My smile perked up again.

My boss swiped a keypad beside a nondescript, unlabelled door that opened into a semi-dark vestibule. The door sealed with a hiss behind us.

As the lights came up, my boss said, "Your official job title is Quality Control. You may converse with others who work here, however, we expect you to make every effort to only mingle with people on this side of the door."

I wasn't sure what to make of that, so I didn't reply.

My boss didn't notice or didn't care, because she stepped to another door and had a retinal scan done. When it finished, she motioned me to step up.

"Anyone entering is immediately scanned, and..."

A robotic voice said, "Retinal scans match body scans. Proceed."

The door ahead clicked open. Not one of the three people looked up as we entered.

I recognised several pieces from the Crown Jewels of England on their tables.

"You will be taking over Bert's table. He is no longer with us."

I shuddered at the mean vibe in my boss's tone and noticed my co-workers shift uneasily in their chairs.

"What is the project?"

"Every gem produced comes through here. You'll look for exact matches and place them accordingly until the tiara is a perfect replica. You'll find details of the gems in the tiara he was working on."

"And then what?"

My boss raised one eyebrow at me.

"But how do you switch them?" I gulped and mentally kicked my runaway mouth.

"We have another department for that. One last thing. Here." She held out a thick pale cream bracelet and nodded at my wrist.

As I was snapping it in place, she bent over and snapped one around the opposite ankle.

"These contain detonators and trackers. They explode if tampered with. Have a good first day."

With that she spun on her heel, marched to the door and did a retina scan to get out before I could get over the shock of having two bombs strapped to my body.

"We think they've got mics too," the man to my right said.

I looked over in shock.

"Welcome to Hell," said the woman behind him.
