Newsies 1992 React to Newsies Live
Requested by AbbyReads03. Be prepared for some hilarious antics. I'm just gonna hit some of the highlights and the stuff that the Newsies would react to the most. I hope you enjoy!!
P.S. There is going to be some Mushling in this for those of who you know what that means. :)
It was another normal day in Manhattan. All of the Newsies were selling papers, Jack and Sarah were together, paper prices were back to normal, Pulitzer was grumbling a little less about the Newsies, a new man had come to sell papers to the Newsies, Weasel and the Delanceys had not been seen for awhile now, Davey's dad said he and Les could sell papes full time now, and Denton had decided to stay in Manhattan. Everything is great until a new Newsie comes into town. No one has ever seen her before and no one is sure where she came from. She does not have a New York accent or really any kind of an accent at all. Little do the Newsies know, but she is an undercover Fansie. She has a magical time travelling rotary dial telephone hidden in a newspaper bag. All she had to do was dial in the year that she wanted to go to and it would take her there. It was heavy but it was worth carrying it with her wherever she went. Since she thought it might be a little creepy if she just kidnapped the boys, she decided to get on the inside of the Newsies circle before she just used her magical telephone which she thought was the coolest thing in the world but, she is not sure how the Newsies will feel about it. On this particular day, the undercover Fansie decides that she is going to make herself known to the boys in some fashion or another. The problem is that she is shy and introverted. Very shy and introverted. Thankfully, she did not have to worry about introducing herself. As she was getting ready to buy her papers, she tripped and nearly fell into a group of the boys. She knew exactly who she nearly fell into and her heart swells when she feels strong arms help her to her feet.
"Youse alright?" The kind voice of Mush Myers asks her and she nods.
"Thanks for catching me," She replies and Racetrack Higgins turns to her and beams.
"Well didn't know Ise was gonna be catching someone sos pretty," Racetrack says. The young girl blushes and tugs her Newsie cap a little bit lower over her face.
"Alright, Race. Go flirt with some other cute girl and leave this young lady be," Jack says and the young girl feels her heart race again. Race whines and wanders off onto the street. Jack turns back to the girl.
"What's your name?" He asks and the girl says,
"Aisling. Aisling Kiley." So the boys don't get freaked out that she knows who Jack is, she asks him for his name even though she already knows everything there is to know about him. Jack smiles at Aisling.
"Mine's name Jack Kelly and this is me goil Sarah Jacobs," Jack replies, "So, what brings you to New York?"
"I have something to show you and your friends. All of you. Including Denton, Snyder, Pulitzer, Medda, Kloppman, Weasel, the Delanceys, all of them," Aisling says shyly and Jack raises an eyebrow.
"I hate to break it you, Aisling, but Snyder's in jail and Pulitzer probably ain't gonna speak to me again," Jack says, "Will all of us do?" Aisling nods her head. Jack turns around and yells at the Newsies to gather close. All of the Newsies come over and Aisling grabs out her rotary dial phone. She dials in the year 2019. All of the boys shout as the scene changes from New York City to a run down theater in the middle of nowhere.
"What'd you say your name was again?" Davey asks as he had been standing nearby when Aisling had introduced herself to Jack.
"Aisling," Aisling replies innocently.
"That's a pretty name," Mush says and Race rolls his eyes.
"You'll have to excuse Mush here. He ain't always the best with goirls," Race says and Jack elbows Race.
"You're one to talk," Jack says and Race quiets down. Aisling simply turns around and starts to lead the large group of boys and Sarah into the theater. Finding the controls for the projector that had apparently been left there, Aisling turns it on and puts in Newsies Live. Mush follows her like a little lost puppy.
"Aisling, is this a movie theater? It looks really fancy," He asks and Aisling nods her head as she fiddles with the projector. She finally turns it on and pauses it. Aisling leaves the projector room, leaving Mush by himself to take in the small room, and talks to Jack. Jack shouts loudly and claps his hands causing the room to quiet down.
"Jack, where are we? Can we please go back to New York? Mama and Papa are going to be so worried about us!" Sarah cries and Jack shushes her.
"I'se sure that we can figure this out. Aisling here seems to know what she is doing," Jack reassures Sarah quietly and Sarah clings to Jack.
"Alright," Aisling says quietly and Skittery yells,
"Speak up, would ya? No one can hear ya if youse talks like a mouse!" Aisling rolls her eyes and starts talking a little louder,
"I am going to show you something that is going to be weird for you to watch. This is a different retelling of how the strike happened. You may like it and you may not. Just please don't leave unless it's an emergency and don't destroy anything. That's all I ask." The boys nod and say that they will comply to the best of their abilities. Every one of the Newsies sits down and Aisling runs back to the projector room. She jumps a little when she sees Mush still standing there.
"Hi! No need to jump. I'se not that scary," He says and Aisling blushes.
"Why don't you go sit with the rest of the Newsies?" She asks and Mush shrugs.
"What if I'se wants to sit with youse?" He asks and Aisling shrugs. On the inside however, her heart is beating faster than she ever thought it could.
"I suppose it wouldn't hurt anything," Aisling says as she presses play on the movie. Mush sits down in the chair next to hers. The music begins and Aisling watches the boys settle in tight. She turns and notices Mush watching her. "What do you want, Mush?" She asks and Mush fidgets a little bit.
"Nothing," He whispers and Aisling can clearly see him gazing at her lips.
"Mush, my eyes are up here. We've just met. Let's just watch the movie, okay?" Aisling says and Mush turns a deep shade of scarlet, "We can be friends though."
"Okay, I'se didn't mean to," Mush starts and stops, "I'se won't makes you do anything you don't want to do. I'se just used to girls fawning over me when they first meet me. You'se haven't."
"I'm not that kind of girl," Aisling says with a chuckle as she turns back to watch the movie. Mush nods before turning to watch the movie. The two watch as the title fades out and Mush sits up straight,
"Newsies!" He cries out loudly and Aisling shushes him.
"Keep it down," She whispers as some of the other Newsies began to cry out at seeing the name of their group on the screen. Once the two catwalks come together, the Newsies quiet down slightly. Aisling continues watching the movie and it only gets better when the boys see the blonde version of Crutchie sit up on the catwalk.
"That ain't me!" Crutchy cries out innocently, "That guy looks really nice and all, but that ain't me." A dark haired version of Jack appears and Jack in the audience smiles when he figures out that they are sleeping on a rooftop.
"You know sleeping on a rooftop ain't such a bad idea, Crutchy," Jack says and Sarah shakes her head quickly.
"Please don't do it, Jack. That's really not safe," She pleads. The boys watch Jack and Crutchie on screen and they all gasp when Crutchie almost falls.
"Crutchy!!" All of the boys shout and they collectively sigh with relief when Jack rescues Crutchie on screen from falling. The two boys start singing about Santa Fe.
"Man, Jacky. That Jack can sing way better than you ever could," Racetrack exclaims and Jack in the audience rolls his eyes.
"More like Crutchy and I don't start our mornings singing about Santa Fe to each other," Jack says and Crutchy nods his head in agreement. The song continues with the bell ringing that signaled that papers were being distributed. Jack on the screen starts yelling at all of the boys to get up.
"Where's Kloppman? He always wakes us up in the morning!" Boots says and Jack shrugs,
"Don't know." Race on the screen starts yelling and Race in the audience crosses his arms,
"What is with that kid's curls? That looks nothing like me!! There is only room for one Racetrack Higgins in this world!!" Race starts running towards the screen and several of the Newsies stand up and hold him back.
"Race, you are the one and only Racetrack Higgins, so let's not try to kill the other guy," Davey says as Jack and Blink pull Race back up to their seats.
"Who's Albert, Henry, and Elmer? Are they new Newsies?" Les asks and Aisling stands up. She walks down to talk to Les.
"They aren't new Newsies, Les. They are Newsies that are in this version. Some of the quieter Newsies that are here with us right now are not in this show," She says and Les looks very sad.
"Why didn't they let the Newsies here be in the show?" He asks and Aisling shrugs.
"I don't know. A lot of them don't have nicknames even," She says and Les' eyes widen. He grabs onto Jack's sleeve.
"Jack! Jack!" Les calls and Jack looks down.
"What is it, kid?" He asks and Les talks to him for a moment.
"Am I right?" Les asks and Jack nods. He looks in the direction of the other Newsies and raises his voice,
"They don't have Newsie names, so they must not be real Newsies!" Some of the other Newsies gasp and Aisling runs back up to Mush and the projector booth. She flops back down into her seat and watches as the boys on the screen get ready for the day.
"I don't know anyone named Albert!!" Race in the audience shouts as the two boys on the screen banter.
"Where's the washroom? Are they just getting ready for the day on the street?" Kid Blink asks loudly. Aisling chuckles at their questions. The boys on the screen begin singing about all of the different places that they would like to sell papers. Every single Newsie in the audience is trying to figure out which one they are.
"Did I get cut from the show?" Mush asks innocently and Aisling shakes her head, "Which one am I?"
"I'll point you out in a minute. You're kind of hard to see right now," Aisling says as the boys stand on the metal beams that represent the Lodging House.
"Our Lodging House doesn't look anything like that," Pie Eater says from the audience. The boys on the screen walk out onto the street and Katherine walks onto the screen. Cat calls and wolf whistles erupt from the audience causing Aisling to roll her eyes. Mush chuckles when he sees this. One of the boys on the screen starts to flirt with Katherine and Jack on the screen pushes the younger boy out of the way.
"Was that me?" Mush asks and Aisling shakes her head, "Good." The boys watch as Jack on the screen gets sassed by Katherine.
"Cheeky boy gets nothing for his troubles," Katherine says causing Aisling to laugh and all of the boys on the screen and in the audience to go "oooooo."
"Cowboy struck out with a girl!! Cowboy struck out with a girl!!" Race chants. Aisling chuckles a little bit when she notices Jack's face getting flushed.
"How dare she talk to a boy that way! Who raised that girl?" Sarah accuses angrily making Aisling chuckle a little bit louder.
"Aisling, what's so funny?" Mush asks and Aisling shrugs.
"The reactions and they're only going to get better the more we watch," She replies and watches as the boys on the screen talk to Crutchie about what he thinks the weather will be according to his leg.
"It's not like I can't do that, but you guys never ask me what my leg thinks the weather will be," Crutchy in the audience says. Aisling points to a boy with a stick standing behind Crutchie on the screen.
"That's you," She says to Mush and Mush raises an eyebrow.
"That looks nothing like me," He replies, "He's got a lot of muscle like me though." The group watches the boys dance and flip around the stage.
"Where's all of the streets, Davey?" Les asks innocently and Davey shrugs.
"I think the stage is the street, Les," He replies. The boys dance up to the nuns and Blink comments,
"Well at least they finally got something right." The boys continue on their way to work and they eventually arrive at the gates to the Distribution Center. A loud boo erupts from the audience when the Delancey brothers show up on the screen. When they hurt Crutchie on the screen, the Newsies in the audience roar with anger. They cheer when Jack attacks the Delanceys with the crutch and runs away.
"Why didn't Jack use his fists to fight? Jack never hits anybody with Crutchy's crutch," Specs says. After awhile the song ends and Weasel calls out that the papes are ready to be bought. The newsies begin their regular heckling with Weasel. After awhile, two kids get in line. Davey and Les both gasp.
"That's supposed to be us!!" They say loudly.
"At least they kind of look you," Crutchie says encouragingly and Jack shrugs. Davey acts about as clueless as the other Davey did about newspapers. The Newsies in the audience get excited when Jack insults Oscar.
"I always knew that neither of em could count twenty with their shoes on," Jack in the audience says. The boys continue to watch and Davey in the audience gets a few cap slaps when the Davey on the screen does the exact same thing that Davey did the first time he sold papes. After awhile, the boys sing and dance their way off the stage and an office setting appears in the backdrop. Pulitzer sits at his desk and the Newsies are eerily silent.
"That's not the reaction I was expecting," Aisling says.
"What'd ya think was gonna happen?" Mush asks her and Aisling says,
"What happened when they saw the Delanceys come on." Pulitzer begins to sing his song and several of the Newsies start to boo.
"Didn't Pussycat Pulitzer could sing like that," Race says once the song is over. The boys on the screen come out and Davey attempts to sell a paper and someone completely ignores him.
"Poor Davey," Sarah says as she turns to her brother, "I didn't think you were that bad at selling papers." Davey blushes and pulls his Newsie cap farther over his blue eyes. Jack walks on the screen to help,
"Sing em to sleep, why don't ya?" Jack mutters as he grabs the paper from Davey and raises it in the air.
"You never did that!" Davey in the audience says and Jack shrugs.
"You're right. I just gave you some advice and let you tough it out yourself. You're a better Newsie because of it," Jack says to Davey. Soon, Jack and Davey on the screen run off so Les can sell a paper.
"He's not very subtle," Les says from the audience and everyone chuckles. Les on the screen makes a dime and Jack decides that the boys should call it a day saying something about finding a safe place to sleep for the night.
"The Lodging House is a safe place to sleep," Crutchy suggests and all of the boys nod their heads in agreement. Suddenly, Snyder appears on the screen and starts chasing the boys on the screen. The Newsies in the audience are yelling things at Snyder and cheering for Jack. The scene onstage changes to a theatre. Davey goes hysterical when he asks Jack about Snyder.
"Whoa, Snyder is scary, but he's not worth getting hysterical over," Davey says. The boys meet Miss Medda and there are more whistles and cat calls from the audience.
"All of them are girl crazy," Aisling says and Mush chuckles.
"They always have been," He replies. Medda talks to Jack and the boys. Les makes a comment about the Bowery Beauties and Davey in the audience covers Les' eyes. Sarah lets out a gasp.
"Who raised the women that are in this show?" She gasps and Aisling chuckles. Medda shows off a painting that Jack painted.
"I ain't no artist!" Jack in the audience exclaims. All of the Newsies in the audience begin to laugh. Aisling fiddles with the end of her braid as she watches the show. After a short while, Medda begins to sing and the Newsies in the audience go silent. When her song is over, they roar with applause.
"Sarah's gonna be in for the shock of her life," Aisling says and Mush cocks an eyebrow.
"Why's that?" He asks and Aisling smirks,
"You're just gonna have to watch, my friend."
"Friend?" Mush questions excitedly, "Did you just call me your friend?" Aisling nods slowly. The boys cheer for Jack as he climbs up the fire escape to talk to Katherine. He flirts with her and won't leave. Sarah crosses her arm and Jack in the audience stares at her.
"Who is that Jack flirting with?" He asks breathlessly. All of the boys watch as Jack and Katherine flirt. Eventually the two quiet down and Jack starts to sing. After a moment, he takes out a newspaper and starts drawing on it. Katherine asks him about what he is doing and Jack shushes her. She says that he is an impossible boy.
"At least I agree with her on one thing," Sarah says moodily. Jack on the screen finishes his drawing and leaves it on the stand. The scene changes to a new morning and some seriously grumpy Newsies.
"They got the part about us being terrible at mornings right," Mush comments and Aisling nods.
"That part is pretty unforgettable, Mush," She says. The two watch as the Newsies banter and then they see the new Newsie price. Jack talks to Weasel about the new price and then they start planning the strike.
"We didn't need no fancy officers for our strike," Jack in the audience says as he watches the screen. The boys start singing another song and Jack riles up the Newsies, preparing them for the strike. Jack, Davey, and Les eventually go in to see Pulitzer.
"He's brave," Davey in the audience says, referring to the Davey on the screen. About a minute later, they get thrown out and Jack walks the Newsies through New York yelling about the change in wages is unfair. They eventually arrive at a restaurant.
"Jacobi's? That ain't Tibby's!" Race shouts after the song is done. The boys begin to talk about the strike and Davey on the screen uses a really big word that no one else knows.
"That sounds like Davey," Mush says with a chuckle. The boys keep talking and Jack brings up sending a boy to Brooklyn to bring them in on the strike. All of the boys go silent.
"They're more scared of Brooklyn than we are!" Boots exclaims and that causes some of the Newsies in the audience to laugh. Suddenly, Katherine appears on the scene wondering why everyone is so scared of Brooklyn. The boys watch as they talk to her about getting a spot in the paper and she agrees to give them a chance.
"At least they found a pretty reporter," Racetrack says with a smirk. The boys leave since the paying customers are coming and Jack and Katherine talk or rather Jack flirts with Katherine and Katherine treats him civilly. After their discussion, Katherine walks off and begins to write the story. She sings a song as she writes.
"Why didn't I get my own song?" Sarah asks annoyed, "I'm not even in this show."
"Yeah and where's Denton?" Davey asks. When her song is over, the boys applaud her.
"Wow, she can really sing," Mush says as they watch. She sits down and continues typing. The scene eventually changes to the next day where the boys are waiting outside the gates for people from other boroughs to show up. Once they figure out that no one is coming, Davey starts to sing and encourage the other boys to stand up for their rights. Some more of the boys come back and Crutchie walks in with his crutch carrying a strike banner. Race sarcastically compliments him and then turns to the rest of the boys and says that it is pitiful.
"Hey!! I would never say something like that to Crutchy!!" Race shouts and the boys gather around and continue singing. Weasel starts talking to intimidate the boys and some scabbers appear, ready to buy some papes.
Cries of "Get out of there!" and "What do you think you are doing?" ring out from the audience. Jack starts talking to some of the scabs, trying to persuade them to join their side. Les walks up at the end and says in the most innocent childlike manner that he does best,
"Please??" One of the scabs moves up close to Jack and the Newsies in the audience get excited.
"Fight fight fight!!" The Newsies in the audience begin to chant and Davey roll his eyes.
"The strike didn't teach them much of anything, did it?" He asks to no one in particular. The boy throws down his papes and the song continues. The boys start to dance a very cool dance.
"They're way too organized with their dancing," Mush says and Aisling sighs.
"They had to be in order to fit everyone onto the stage," She says. Mush shrugs and nods his head in agreement. Aisling suddenly looks as if she is trying to remember something. "Mush, you want to come back to New York with me? I think we forgot somebody," Aisling says and Mush raises an eyebrow.
"Who did we forget?" Mush asks and Aisling sighs.
"The King of Brooklyn and I am kind of scared to go talk to him myself so can you come with me?" She asks and Mush sighs. The scene keeps playing and the boys in the audience watch the dancing intently.
"You really think I am someone who is brave enough to talk to Spot Conlon?" Mush asks and Aisling shrugs.
"You have the muscle to scare him off if he gets too scary and don't worry, we can be scared together," She says and Mush shrugs.
"Alright, just listen to me. Brooklyn ain't the nicest part of New York," He says and Aisling takes out her rotary dial phone, which Mush has to help her set down somewhere because it is really heavy for her to lift, and dials in the year 1899. The two disappear and finds themselves in New York exactly where they had left off. Mush gently puts a hand on Aisling's shoulder and starts to guide her through the busy Manhattan streets and in the direction of Brooklyn. Aisling allows him to lead her to the bridge and she gasps when she sees it.
"That looks really nice!" She says and Mush chuckles a little at her admiration.
"Come on, Aisling. Spot should be ready to break for lunch soon," He says and the two of them walk off towards a small restaurant in Brooklyn. As they get closer, Mush snakes his arm around Aisling's waist.
"What are you doing?" She hisses in his ear, trying to break free of his grasp which Mush only tightens.
"This will go a whole lot easier if the Brooklyn boys think that you're my girl," Mush whispers and Aisling looks at him in shock.
"You'd do that for me?" She asks and Mush smiles sweetly.
"We're friends, aren't we?" He asks and Aisling nods. The two walk into the restaurant and Mush moves his arm from her waist to her shoulders since he thought holding her around the waist might be a little too far at first and if the boys started asking questions, he could move his arm to her waist. A protective gesture that the Brooklyn boys will surely notice. Aisling and Mush walk over to Spot who is standing on a top of a table, surveying the wild activity of his Newsies.
"Hey, Spot!" Mush calls out cheerfully. Spot Conlon turns and shakes his head in disbelief at his ally's Newsie standing below him.
"Well, if it ain't Mush and another girl," Spot says with a chuckle, "You really can't keep em for long, can you?" Mush's face flushes red and Aisling gently slides her arm under his and rubs his strong shoulder comfortingly. She spots Spot eyeing her movements and Mush shoots him a glare.
"I wouldn't get in between us, Spot," Aisling says, "We're very serious." As she says this, Mush slides his hand down her back and around her waist, causing sparks of heat to roll down her back. Her cheeks flush a little bit and Spot notices. Jealous that Mush is making Aisling react the way she is and since Spot can never ignore a girl when he sees one, Spot jumps down and reaches for Aisling's hand which she pulls away and uses to get out her rotary dial telephone. She quickly dials the year 2019 into the phone and the scene changes back to the abandoned theatre. Spot yells something loudly that Aisling would never repeat.
"What is this? And what is going on there?" Spot yells and Aisling and Mush shush him. Jack wanders up at the commotion along with Race right next to him. Jack and Spot spitshake when they see each other and Spot follows Jack and Race down to their seats, talking with them quietly. Race steps back and notices something. Mush and Aisling still stand together and Mush still has his arm around Aisling's waist.
"Did something happen that I wasn't told about?" Race asks and Mush and Aisling notice how close they are to each other.
"Oh! No. Race, you have the wrong idea," Aisling starts and Mush starts to back her up.
"I was just doing that so Spot would keep his hands off of her," He says and Race nods with his eye brow raised and his arms crossed.
"Suuuuurrrreeee," He says before walking back down towards the seats. He comes back a second later, "So, when's the wedding?"
"Get out of here!" Aisling and Mush both scold and Race puts his hands up in surrender before running back down to the seats. At this point, the dancing is almost done in Seize the Day and a fight breaks out. Aisling hears the boys cheer and then whine because almost none of the guys are using their fists to fight. The boys scare the Delanceys and the other people they are fighting away and then they go back to dancing. The Newsies in the audience break out into cheers and Aisling begins to chuckle. Boys flip across the screen and they snap a picture. They cheer for their victory until some cops show up. Another fight breaks loose and the shouting in the audience swells.
"Use your fists! Use your fists!" The Newsies in the audience chant and Mush shakes his head.
"Why don't they use their fists?" He asks and Aisling shrugs.
"I don't know. It makes me sad," She says. The fight ends when Crutchie starts crying for help.
"CRUTCHIE!!!" All of the boys in the audience cry out and Crutchy gasps.
"Snyder got me?" He cries out, "He's worse than Oscar and Morris!" Crutchy covers his ears and shuts his eyes at the loud cries. Aisling notices this and hits the mute button. Jack on the screen watches in horror and once Crutchie has been taken to the Refuge, Aisling turns the sound back on. Crutchy opens his eyes and moves his hands away from his ears. Jack on the screen cries out loudly and Aisling gets a smile on her face.
"What are you smiling about?" Mush asks, "Crutchie's been taken by Snyder. That's horrible!"
"I'm not smiling about that," Aisling says and nods to the screen, "Jack's just got a great voice and a heck of a lot of passion going here." As Jack on the screen sings about Santa Fe, Jack in the audience's jaw drops. Aisling chuckles when she notices this. When the song is over and the screen goes black for the end of Act 1, Jack says,
"I didn't know I had that much passion about Santa Fe nor that I could sing that good." The song that opens Act 2 starts to play and a bunch of beat up Newsies sit at Jacobi's.
"They still got it wrong!" Racetrack cries out when he notices the sign. The boys are all very sad and they agree with Race's question about old people talking. Katherine comes in and shows that the boys are front page news. The boys begin to fight over the newspaper.
"Since when did we get so greedy?" Kid Blink asks and Race says,
"Since ya were born, that's when." The boys glare at each other and Aisling clears her throat. Both boys nod at each other and straighten their vests before turning back to the screen. Race on the screen soon starts singing about being the King of New York. The rest of the boys and Katherine soon join in. They start tap dancing and Race mutters,
"I'se still a better tap dancer than the rest of them." Mush taps his foot to the beat. They get to the end of the song and Les says,
"They didn't sing very much and I never broke my arm." He refers to the broken arm that his character on the screen had. The boys start talking about doing a rally and they agree to do one. Katherine starts asking about Jack and the Newsies say that they haven't seen him. Shortly after that, the scene changes to Crutchie in the Refuge. He is writing a letter to Jack and he sings what he is thinking and writing as he writes it. When he gets to the end, a lot of the boys look really sad and at the same time, proud of Crutchie for staying positive even in the Refuge.
"You never were one to give up," Jack says and Crutchie beams.
"I try," Crutchie says with a beam and then the boys start to talk about Jack since he hasn't shown up in awhile on the screen.
"At least you didn't become a scab," Davey says to Jack and Jack shrugs. The scene changes to Jack and Medda talking in Medda's basement. Jack is painting something. Eventually, Katherine, Davey, and Les find him.
"You can run, but you can't hide," Les says to Jack in the audience creepily.
"Jack, you never got this torn up about me. You came and visited, but you weren't that sad," Crutchy says.
"I have more control over my emotions," Jack says fiddling with his bandana. Davey starts talking to Jack and Jack moodily tries to ignore them and then tries to tell them to go away. Of course, neither thing works. Les starts to talk about the rally and how he has a date.
"I have a girl in this? Wow!" He says excitedly with a huge smile on his face. The older Newsies begin to congratulate the younger boy and they tease each other about how a younger boy can get a girl and they can't.
Jack is still upset and after some talking, turns around a mural showing Pulitzer's shoe crushing a bunch of boys and says that it is Newsies Square. Jack blames himself for Crutchie being thrown in jail.
"Wow, you never took it that personally," Crutchy in the audience says and Davey chuckles. Davey on the screen starts to encourage Jack and the small group convinces Jack to be back with them. Jack decides to speak with Pulitzer about the rally that is coming up. The scene changes and Katherine walks into Pulitzer's office.
"What is Pulitzer doing with a nice girl like her? Is she a traitor?" Kid Blink asks. Sarah frowns,
"I knew there was something troubling about her. All that time she spent around the Newsies and the feelings that she had for them didn't seem to be genuine. She danced scandalously too!" Jack raises an eyebrow.
"What do you mean?" He asks.
"Her skirt went above her ankles!!" Sarah whispers. Aisling chuckles at Sarah's reaction. Everyone watches the screen carefully, especially when Katherine is confronted with the article. She sits down in a chair moodily.
"I don't think she's a traitor," Jack in the audience says. The group watches as Pulitzer discusses the Newsies with the Mayor and his other workers. After some discussion, Pulitzer calls to Snyder to ask which one is Jack. Snyder points him out and then the secretary says that Jack is present. Pulitzer makes Katherine sit and turns her chair around so that she cannot see Jack.
"Oh no!" Les gasps, "What's going to happen to Jack?" Jack walks in with lots of confidence and swagger. Pulitzer immediately insults him and things go downhill from there. Jack tries to invite Pulitzer to the rally and Pulitzer shuts it down. He eventually reveals that Katherine is there and Jack gets upset thinking that this a betrayal. Katherine tries to explain and Pulitzer reveals that Katherine is his daughter. Eventually, Pulitzer also reveals Snyder. If Jack goes through with the rally, all of the Newsies will be thrown in the Refuge.
"NO!! That little good for nothing," Spot starts to say and Davey covers Les' ears just in case, "I haven't seen myself in here yet. What kind of show is this?"
"Pulitzer was smart," Davey says and every one of the Newsies glares at him, "Calm down, boys. It was just an observation." However, if Jack on the screen stops the rally and dismantles the strike, Pulitzer will send Jack off with enough money to go to Santa Fe and will let the Newsies go free.
"That rat!" Race yells, "I oughta give him a piece of mind."
"That's not fair," Mush says to Aisling and she nods,
"Don't worry. The boys are basically verbalizing my emotions every time I watch this." Jack gets angry and Pulitzer has the Delanceys put him in the cellar so he can think. The Brooklyn Newsies begin to sing their song and Spot smiles.
"I'm on, fellas! I finally made an appearance. Would you look at that?" Spot cheers. He moves Skittery's head who is talking to Pie Eater toward the screen.
"Look at me. I look even stronger and better!! Not quite as handsome, but look at my muscles!" Spot says and Skittery rolls his eyes.
"You're never gonna have muscles like that, Spot," He says and Spot glares at him.
"I will too," Spot snaps and then the rally begins distracting both boys. The rally seems to be going well and the boys on the screen start chanting for Jack. The Newsies in the audience quickly catch on. Soon, the whole place is roaring with
"JACK! JACK! JACK! JACK!" Somehow, everyone quiets down at once. Jack on the screen comes in and the rally goes downhill from there.
"Medda's not gonna sing," Race says heartbroken.
"She didn't. That's not right," Kid Blink says, "Medda has to sing."
"What about the fight?" Jack in the audience asks, "We weren't just going to go quietly." Jack runs up, clearly frustrated and runs right into Katherine. The two talk and fight over Katherine's relation to Pulitzer. Jack blames Katherine for lying about her name. Katherine claims that she never lied.
"Jacky just got denied," Mush says making Aisling chuckle. They watch as the two continue to fight and then they kiss.
"ooooooooo,"All of the boys say and when they break apart and Jack on the screen leans in for more, the boys laugh. Sarah fidgets uncomfortably in her seat. Jack notices and gently squeezes her hand. Katherine and Jack begin to talk about an idea that Katherine has. Jack sort of dismisses it and Katherine starts to question his logic and Jack gets flustered.
"Now would be a good time to shut up!" Katherine says and all of the boys oooo. Jack says he's listening and Katherine says,
"Oh! Good for you!"
"OOOOO," The newsies say.
"Cowboy just got himself another burn," Race shouts and Jack rolls his eyes.
"Grow up, Race," He says. Aisling chuckles at their bantering and the two on the screen continue talking. They come up with a plan to break into Pulitzer's cellar and use the printing press to print out the Children's Crusade. Eventually, they begin to sing a love ballad and then they kiss again, making the boys cheer and Sarah fidget yet again. They sing a little more and the two end the song with a hug. A few minutes later, the Newsies are guarding the outside of the cellar and singing Seize the Day. The group on the inside is hurrying and getting things ready. Darcy and Bill show up and Katherine says something that makes all of the boys happy that she is on the Newsies' side.
"While my father sleeps blissfully in his bed, we will be using his very own printing press to bring him down," She says and all of the Newsies cheer. The group begins printing papers and Davey acts more like the leader.
"Whoa whoa whoa," Jack says, "I thought I was in charge here."
"I let you be in charge!" Davey protest and Jack points to the screen,
"What's that look like?" Davey rolls his eyes and the two watch the boys start tossing the papers up. Eventually they just sing and hold the papers.
"Delivering banners to kids just by standing in one spot," Skittery says, "That's a new tactic."
"Where are all the kids that they're gonna hand these out to?" Boots asks innocently.
"No offense, Aisling. But, what exactly do they think they're gonna do with those?" Mush asks Aisling.
"They're going to "deliver" them offscreen," She replies. The scene changes to Pulitzer and his office people yelling at people on the phone.
"Pussycat Pulitzer is finally realizing his mistake," Race says. Jack, Davey, and Spot walk in with a paper for Pulitzer with one of Pulitzer's workers chasing them.
"You can't just barge in!" The worker says and Spot smirks,
"I'm Spot Conlon. I can do whatever I want." Jack presents the paper to Joseph and he refuses. After awhile of arguing with Pulitzer, the Governor arrives. He is very funny and charismatic. At one point, he asks the boys,
"He doesn't do happiness, does he?" All of the Newsies in the audience shake their heads. When Governor Roosevelt brings up the children and the Newsies wave, all of the Newsies in the audience are confused.
"There were hundreds of other kids that weren't even Newsies, where are they?" Davey asks.
" These are just the same kids that have always been here, how are they getting anywhere this strike?" Skittery asks.
"I like that guy," Mush says, referring to Roosevelt.
"Me too," Aisling replies. The Governor manages to convince Jack and Pulitzer to talk privately. He asks They do and they come to a resolution. The prices will be reduced by half and Pulitzer buys back what the boys don't sell.
"That's a good negotiator, but I was there too!" Davey says and Jack pouts,
"Oh, is little Davey getting sad about his lack of screen time?" Davey rolls his eyes and elbows Jack. Jack walks out and shouts that they won. All of the boys on the screen and off cheer loudly. Shortly after that, Snyder gets locked up because Jack had some drawings from the Refuge that he kept up in his penthouse that were of the terrible things that were happening there. Crutchie is released and Jack hugs him. Pulitzer offers Jack an artist job at the World, but Jack declines it at first because he still wants to go to Santa Fe.
"What did you ever see in that place?" Sarah asks and Jack shrugs.
"It sounded nice. Is there a problem with that?" He asks and Sarah shakes her head. Davey, Crutchie, and Katherine start to convince Jack to stay and he eventually does. He kisses Katherine again as he sings to her about how he would miss New York.
"That's a good man," Sarah says, "I still don't like Katherine though." The boys on and off the screen cheer yet again and Davey asks if Jack is in or out. Jack gets teased by all of the Newsies and he slams his pay on the table. The boys cheer and a finale song goes on. Everyone on the screen is cheering and dancing. Jack and Katherine kiss again and then the musical is over. Aisling stops it before the credits roll. She shuts off the projector and Mush follows her back down to the boys.
"What did you guys think?" She asks them and Davey shrugs.
"That was interesting," He says, "Not really what happened, but it was interesting."
"Can we go back now?" Spot snaps, "Some of us have papes to sell."
"I think that that Jack was way too emotional," Jack says making Sarah laugh.
"I am happy with you just the way you are," She says, kissing his cheek.
"We don't look anything like our characters," Race says.
"Some of us weren't even there!" Skittery cries out.
"Some of us it was like we didn't exist," Kid Blink says.
"The dancing was kind of cool," Mush says and the boys all raise their eyebrows.
"I thought it was interesting. There was some similarities," Crutchie says optimistically.
"Good. Thanks for sharing," Aisling says, "You guys want to go sell your papes now?"
"Yeah, it would be nice to eat tonight," Skittery says moodily. Aisling pulls out her rotary dial telephone and dials in the year 1899. The world changes around them and then they are in 1899. Some of the boys grab their papers while others get in line to buy theirs. Aisling fiddles with the phone getting ready to go back when some of the Newsies notice.
"Aisling, where are you going? You don't have to leave so soon," Race says.
"I should probably get back. I don't belong here," Aisling says and Davey shrugs.
"You showed us something interesting and we could kind of like to get to know you better," Davey says.
"Maybe. I'll hang around until you guys leave to sell your papers," Aisling says and the boys nod. Mush walks up behind her and he looks especially sad after hearing the conversation.
"You want to sell papes with me? I'll teach you how," Mush offers.
"Are you just trying to get me to stay?" Aisling asks.
"Maybe. I'm your friend and that's a thing that friends do," Mush reasons.
"That's true. I'm still not sure that's a wise idea," Aisling says.
"We'll stay out of trouble. I'll protect you and teach you how to sell papes. It'll be fun," Mush says, "Come on, I've been to your part of the world. Why can't I show you some of mine?" Aisling smiles. She really can't resist his offer.
"Alright," She says, "I'm in."
