Broadway Me

This one was requested by BeckyMerari1808.

She was one who loved the stage. He was one who judged those on the stage. Her career had begun as something simple. Vaudeville performances, community theatre gigs, anything that she could get her hands on. Her brother, Racetrack Higgins encouraged her to try when she failed. He was hard and critical. Racetrack belonged with a group of theatre kids that had stuck together since high school. Now, they were breaking in to the big stage and trying to make their Broadway debuts. They had talent, each and every one of them. One judge who was infamous for his criticism made sure that they never saw the stage. He hated the boys who called themselves the Newsies. No one could soften his feelings toward them and most of the performers on Broadway knew that deep down, no one ever would. He would listen to auditions and give a ruthlessly cruel review. Then he would send the poor person auditioning packing. But, she was determined. She wanted to prove to him that anybody can be on the stage. So, she signed up to audition for Mary Poppins.  Katie told her brother what she was going to do.

"You do realize that Oscar Delancey is going to tear you to pieces," Racetrack told his sister and she shrugged.

"I have heard about the bad reputation he has and I know that there is a really sweet guy underneath all of those hard feelings," Katie replied and Race shook his head.

"You have no idea what you are getting yourself into, Katie. He could make it so you never see a chance at being on the Broadway stage ever again," Race explained and Katie shrugged.

"I will make it so he realizes that people have the potential to be on the stage. Even people like us." Race gave up, unsure of how to encourage his sister away from him further.

"Suit yourself. It's your funeral, Katie. I'll be sure to speak at it," Race teased and Katie socked him in the arm.

"I will make it. You'll see," She said quickly and lightly punched his shoulder again. Katie began to prepare for her audition which meant that she was playing the piano and singing her audition song all the time. One day, Race had been practicing acrobatics and dance with some of the other boys and was laying on the couch listening to Katie sing and play the piano. It was the night before her audition and she had been practicing for as long as Race could remember that day. Finally, he stood up and went into the adjacent room. Race turned his sister around in the middle of her song and she stared up at him with the most innocent eyes Race had ever seen.

"Take a break. If you wear yourself out, you won't do well tomorrow," Race advised and Katie nodded. After a dinner of takeout Chinese, the two siblings watched some T.V. and then went to bed. The next morning, Katie woke up and prepared herself for her audition. She dressed nicely for the part of her audition that was not dancing and she packed clothes to change into so that she could dance in a little bit easier. At exactly nine A.M., Katie sat in a chair outside of a rehearsal room, mentally preparing herself for her audition. She was humming a song when the door was flung open and a young girl scampered out, tears running down her face.

"Your singing was terrible and your choreography was something that a sleepy panda could have done better at than you!" The young girl stood crying for several moments and Katie could see the shadow of a tall, dark, brooding figure in the doorway. Katie clutched her purse nervously and became very nervous with the tense atmosphere. Maybe, he wasn't as sweet as she thought he could be. Katie shuddered at the thought and watched as the young girl walked out and flopped into a chair.

"Are you alright?" Katie asked softly and the girl shook her head. She looked Katie in the eye.

"What do you expect? He's a complete jerk! He's worse than Simon on America's Got Talent!! " The girl cried and Katie gasped.

"Worse than Simon?! He must be absolutely rotten!" Katie replied and the girl nodded.

"That man has no respect for anyone or anything. No one decent gets on Broadway, it's all of his friends who can't sing or dance to save their miserable lives!" The girl said and wiped at her red eyes. Katie put a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"I am going to make that change. My audition has been something that I have been working on for a long time. I will work hard to make a lasting impression on him," Katie said determined to change things for the better. The girl nodded and just as the two were about to continue their conversation, the door to the audition room opened and a voice called out,

"Katherine Marie Higgins!!!!" Katie nervously rose to her feet and the girl's eyes shot up to Katie.

"Don't die in there! Don't let him hurt you!!!" The girl encouraged and Katie smiled cheerily as she walked into the audition room with her head held high. Three men sat behind a folding table with clipboards and pens in front of each of them.

"Hello, Miss Higgins!" The man who sat in the middle greeted her and Katie could hear a sinister undertone in his voice. Katie smiled and just took it all in stride even though she was terrified on the inside.

"Hello." Katie responded nervously and she shook hands with the three men. They introduced themselves as Morris Delancey, Oscar Delancey, and Thomas Wiesel. Katie went back to her place behind her music stand where she placed her music.

"Floor's yours, Miss Higgins. If you dare," Oscar instructed with a sinister chuckle under his breath. Katie shuddered slightly and the three men noticed.  "Don't be scared, Katherine. We aren't mean." Katie shuddered even more, but shook it off and continued with her audition.

"As you know, I am Katie Higgins and I am going to be singing "In My Dreams" from Anastasia," Katie said and she began to sing softly. Her confidence grew and as her confidence grew, her singing improved. When the song began, she saw Oscar Delancey smirking and already writing something seething down on his clipboard. Eventually, Katie got caught up in singing the song and forgot that she was performing in an audition. When the song ended, all three men were silent for a moment. Katie smiled, but her smile instantly vanished when all she saw was Oscar Delancey give a casual shrug.

"Not the best, but not the worst. There is always room for improvement," Oscar said and picked up his script. "Why don't we run some lines?"

"Okay," Katie answered shyly, obviously uncomfortable with the situation. She shifted uneasily under the judging gaze of the three men. "If it is okay if I ask, are you three the men who are going to be directing this performance?" Oscar shook his head.

"Nah. Joseph Pulitzer himself is directing this show with the assistance of director Snyder. Trust me, sweetheart. This is only round one. Pulitzer doesn't take kindly to girls who sing like small children," Oscar replied and pointed to the script. "Back to what we were planning to do..."

"Of course," Katie replied with a nod and opened her own copy of the script. Oscar ran various lines with her and criticized her all the more.

"You sound scared now, imagine being in front of a thousand times this many people every night of your life for awhile. You can't do it now, then you won't do it then."

"Ugh! Who did you learn to project like that from? Your drama teacher that was really studying to be a veterinarian?"

"And I thought your singing was weak. You cannot project worth anything."

"Did you leave your emotional reading abilities at home, Higgins? Because that's what it sounds like."

"Your singing kind of sounded like that of a dying whale." Eventually, Katie had had enough.

"ENOUGH!!!!" She yelled and Oscar laughed.

"You think you, the tiny girl that is auditioning, can tell me what to do? I don't think that that is how this works, sweetheart. You do that again, we're done here. Understand?" He snarled and Katie shook her head.

"Fine. Then I'm done. If there is one thing I hate, it is a big bully who picks on other people because they try out for something. People try and you turn them down. Why do you do this? Shouldn't you be happy that people at least try?" Katie snapped and Oscar simply stared back at her. Katie quickly grabbed her bags and started walking out but, Oscar called out to her,

"Wait. I want to hear more of you." Katie stopped and turned around.

"Why? You said I was terrible," Katie responded and Oscar stood up.

"I haven't actually decided yet," Oscar replied and Katie stared at him.

"Oh. Okay," She replied and walked back over to her place. Oscar and Katie ran some more lines and then, Katie slipped into the restroom to change into some dancing clothes. She reentered the audition room and noticed Oscar staring at her. Only until his brother began playing music on the piano so Katie could dance, did Oscar take his eyes off of her. Katie began to dance and performed the choreography with ease. Once she was done, Oscar stood up to his feet and walked over to her.

"That was some of the best dancing I have ever seen. Please do another song," Oscar requested and Katie turned to Morris. Morris started to play another song and Katie began to dance. She danced and Oscar marveled at her. He had never heard a woman speak up to him as Katie did and he had never seen anyone dance or sing or act as she had. Katie would be the perfect Mary Poppins. Once the song was over, Oscar burst out in applause and stood to his feet. Katie gave a mini bow and smiled.

"Thank you for allowing me to audition. I'm sorry if I acted out of place here, it really was my fault," Katie apologized as she exited. The other two nodded off her apology, and Oscar merely stared at her. Katie walked out and began to leave the theatre. Oscar ran out after her and stopped her.

"Katie. Katie, wait. I..Thank you," Oscar stuttered and Katie cocked her blonde head. "You are the only person who has been bold enough to tell me what I was doing was wrong. I could be nicer sometimes and I really though you did a great job. You have a lot of great potential to be Mary Poppins. And I, well, you look absolutely beautiful. I would love to take you out sometime." Katie smiled up at him.

"I would love to go out with you sometime."

TIME SKIP- TWO LOVELY MONTHS LATER

Katie bowed again in the middle of the Broadway stage. The last two months playing Mary Poppins had been absolutely wonderful and Katie loved every second of it. After the cast took their final bows, Katie walked off the stage to find her boyfriend standing off to the side. He didn't say a word and kissed her gently instead. As they kissed, Katie thought of everything they had been through in the past couple of months. He had once been a cruel man who judged people much too harshly on their auditions, but Katie had found the sweet man that was hiding underneath. They separated for a moment and Oscar said,

"Well done, Mary Poppins. You are the best Mary Poppins they have ever been."

"Thank you. Thank you for making it happen."

"Only for you, love." Oscar said and the two kissed again behind the stage, thinking of all of the successes they had achieved. She had gone from being a shy timid girl to a Broadway star and he had gone from a cruel man to someone who loved people dearly.
