Stopping The Joke
It had been a few months into Robin Warner and Barbara Gordon's relationship, and things were looking up for Robin. He was the happiest Ink-Blot Dude to be with Barbara. It was a normal day for Robin. He was writing a letter to his mentor and friend Bugs Bunny. He wrote about how happy he was now that he was in a relationship with Barbara. Meanwhile, Barbara's father called her, expressing an interest in meeting her new boyfriend. "You really want to meet Robin?" Barbara asked. On the phone, James replied, "I sure do. He seems like a nice fellow from what I've heard. I'll even make hot cocoa for the both of you at my apartment." Barbara smiled and said, "that sounds great Daddy. What time do you want us to meet you?" James replied, "just come around 6:30. I love you princess." Barbara giggled and replied, "I love you too Daddy," and hung up. She then walked to Robin as he finished his letter to Bugs. "Hey Robin, guess what?" Barbara asked as she smiled lovingly at her boyfriend. "What's up?" Robin asked, putting the letter in an envelope. "My dad wants to meet you," said Barbara, "we're meeting at 6:30." Robin was surprised her father wanted to meet him, but it was a great opportunity for him. "Hey, that sounds great," said Robin, "I'll be back Babs, gotta mail this letter to Bugs." He then walked to the mailbox while whistling Bittersweet Symphony, as he put the letter in.
Suddenly, Zatanna Zatara, Mistress of Magic appeared. "Oh hey there Zatanna," said Robin, "it's good to see you. How's John doing?" While Robin was surprised to see the Mistress of Magic, it was always nice to see her since she was a friend of Barbara's, and anyone that's a friend of Barbara's was a friend of Robin Warner's. "Hello Robin," said Zatanna, "John is doing fine, thank you for asking. But I need to talk to you about something. I had a vision last night. It was about Barbara. And it wasn't a good one." Now Robin was concerned due to the change in her voice. "What happened in your vision?" Robin asked, a little scared. "In my vision, Joker escapes, and he shoots Barbara in order to drive her father mad, and he goes so far as to take pictures of her in pain," explained Zatanna, and when Robin heard all that, he was frightened horribly. "What happens afterwards? Barbara? She..." Robin stammered, afraid of what might happen to the woman he loved dearly. "I'm afraid the bullet will paralyze her permanently..." Zatanna sadly said, "She'll never walk again, and she'll never be Batgirl again because she'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life..." Robin started breathing intensely as he asked, "Is there a way that it can be stopped?" Zatanna knew that Robin was concerned, and even her voice showed uncertainty when she said, "I'm not sure if it can be stopped..." Then Robin thought for a moment until he asked, "What was she wearing in the vision?" Zatanna tried to remember the vision, until it popped back into her mind, and said, "She was wearing a buttoned yellow shirt, a tan grey skirt, and black flats with no socks." Robin gasped as he said, "My gosh, that's what she's wearing right now! You mean it's going to happen tonight?" Zatanna nodded sadly. That's when Robin said, "Well if I have to get killed in order to prevent that clown from hurting Barbara, I will! Nobody's going to make my Barbara miserable! I swear it!" Zatanna then said, "Oh, just a heads up, Jim might make the meeting an hour late since he'll be meeting with Batman." Robin was surprised that Zatanna knew, "Well, okay. Guess Babs should get a call soon... Still, if I don't make it, tell my family I love them." Zatanna nodded as she then used a spell to make herself disappear.
And sure enough, Jim called Barbara, letting her know that there would be a bit of a 1 hour delay due to something going on with Batman, which Barbara could understand, but Robin knew it probably had something to do with Joker... Indeed, a storm was coming... At 7:30, Barbara and Robin came into Jim Gordon's apartment, meeting him. Jim opened the door, smiling at his daughter as he said, "Hello princess." Barbara hugged him as she said, "Hello Daddy." Jim then looked at Robin as he said, "And you must be Robin Warner." Robin shook his hand as he said, "Yes sir, it's great to finally meet you." Jim smiled as he said, "same to you. Barbara's told me good things about you. Please, both of you, come on in." And so Barbara and Robin came into Jim's apartment, and despite all of them aware that Joker escaped, Jim wanted to focus more upon spending time with his daughter and getting to know Robin, and of course enjoy the hot cocoa. It was obvious that Barbara's father liked him, and Robin saw in Jim, something close to a father figure. Everything was going smooth, until there was a knock on the door. Jim, not expecting any visitors at this time, asked, "was that the door?" Robin had a bad feeling of who it was when Barbara said, "I don't know....hold on let me get it." She then opened the door, and saw, much to her surprise but horror, that Joker was outside with 2 of his goons. Joker was wearing his usual purple hat and gloves, but was also wearing sunglasses, and a tourist kind of outfit with a tacky tropical Hawaiian shirt and glasses. and he held a gun, ready to shoot Barbara.
But before he could do anything, Robin ran up and put Barbara inside his Acme Brand cap like a magician would put a rabbit inside his hat. This surprised Jim as he said, "Barbara! What happened to her?" Robin, not paying attention to Joker and his goons, looked at Jim as he said, "don't worry Jim, she's safe... She's-" suddenly, Robin was shot right near the hip by the Joker, and he landed smack on the floor. Joker and the 2 thugs went in as the Clown got a glass of vodka. Jim, looking at the injured Robin Warner, said with concern, "Robin?" Suddenly, the 2 thugs beat Jim up until he was knocked out. "How nice of you to let us in, though I must admit, the magic trick was a little too overdone. God, this discussion seems so dry, don't you think? When you've finished with the old boy, you know where to take him. And please.... Do be careful! After all, he is topping the bill." As the 2 thugs took Jim away, Joker glared at Robin as he said, "so, thought you'd sabotage my plan, eh?" Robin moaned in pain, "not.... going to let you.... hurt my Barbara...." Joker then started chuckling as he mockingly said, "you and the Commissioner's daughter?" He then laughed even more sadistically as he said in disbelief, "out of all the jokes I've heard, that one takes the cake! No matter..." Joker then took pictures of Robin in pain as he said with sadistic glee, "you can still play a role. I can just ask Scarecrow to lend me his fear gas, and I'll have more fun with the Commish! Don't be sad, kiddo! Smile!" Joker then got out his laughing gas, and the toxins were released. Joker inhaled the air as he said, "Come on old boy, breathe it up! You'll find it's good for you!" Robin soon started going into uncontrollable fits of laughter. Joker then laughed with glee as he said, "that's a good boy! Laugh! Laugh it up!" He took pictures of Robin laughing uncontrollably, and when Joker finished taking pictures, he raised his glass of vodka and said, "Here's to crime." Joker then laughed as he left the room, leaving Robin for dead.
As the gas cleared out, Robin mustered enough of whatever strength he had left to pull Barbara out of his Space Jam cap, before giving in and succumbing to the fits of laughter. He then uttered out, "he-he-he-he-he-help... ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha..... me-he-he-he-he-he-he-he...." Barbara looked in horror at poor Robin as she cried out, "Robin, stay with me! Don't leave me!" Tears started coming into her eyes as she cradled him. Suddenly Barbara's phone started ringing, and it was Bruce. Barbara picked it up, and Bruce said on the phone, "Barbara, Zatanna told me something was going to happen to you. Are you alright? Is Jim alright?" Barbara responded, "No we got attacked by Joker and his goons! They took my dad and Robin got shot! And what's worse, Robin got exposed to Joker's laughing gas, and the effects are happening right now!" She looked at Robin, who was fighting for his life. "Barbara, calm down. There's still time," assured Bruce, "take Atticus to the Batcave. I'll have antidote ready to cure him, and Alfred will fix him up." Barbara sighed in relief as she said, "Thank you Bruce..." She then hung up as she picked up Robin and carried him all the way to the Batcave. She then put Robin on the medical table. Bruce had his Batsuit on, minus the cowl. "Stand back," said Bruce, "I'm going to put the antidote in him right now." He then got out a syringe with Joker antitoxins, and put the serum into Robin, and in less than half a minute, Robin stopped laughing, but was out like a lump. "Robin!" Barbara yelled out in fear, but Bruce held her back, and said, "Barbara, look at me! Calm down! He's going to be okay. Atticus just needs rest. Alfred, start operating on Atticus, take the bullet out of him and stabilize him." Alfred nodded and got to work. Barbara then started crying as she said, "Oh god, what's he doing to him? What's he doing to my father?" Bruce then put on the cowl as he said, "I don't know Barbara, but I'll find him, I swear." Barbara then said, "I'm going with you!" Batman then stopped her as he said, "No, I can't let you, not like this. You're letting your emotions cloud your judgment. You'll be sloppy and predictable, and Joker will use that against you in this fight, and he'll win. You have to stay with Atticus." Barbara then listened to reason and said, "okay please Bruce...please find my dad....make sure he is safe." Batman got into the Batmobile as he said, "I'll do my best," and drove away.
Barbara patiently waited as Alfred operated on Robin, taking the bullet out of him, and stabilizing him. Robin and Barbara's pet husky puppy, Skittles, walked in, whining. Barbara picked the puppy up, cradling him. Skittles snuggled up to her and licked her cheek, which calmed Barbara down a bit. Much later, Alfred walked in relieved as he said, "good news Miss Gordon, Mr. Warner is stable. He's wearing an oxygen mask. Do you think we should contact one of his friends? There's one known as a Bugs Bunny..." Barbara thought for a moment and said, "Sure, I'll call Bugs. Robin has said some pretty good things about him." She then picked up Robin's phone and called Bugs. Bugs Bunny then picked up the phone and said, "Eh, what's up Doc?" Barbara snorted a little since this was Bugs Bunny, but she regained her composure as she asked, "Hello is this Bugs Bunny?" Bugs replied, "You're talking to him now." Barbara then sighed as she said, "I believe you're a mentor and friend to Robin Warner. I'm his girlfriend, Barbara Gordon. Robin recently got shot, and... it would be nice if you visited him. You mean a lot to him..." Bugs, concerned for his pupil and friend, said, "Of course, I'll be right over as soon as possible. Luckily, I got a few of Robin's other letters from your city, so I think I can find ya." Bugs then hung up and drove to Gotham City. Alfred then picked up Robin and said, "I'll put the young lad in his bedroom." He then carried Robin all the way to his bedroom, tucked him into his bed, putting an oxygen mask on him. Barbara then sat on a chair, holding Robin's hand, never leaving his sight. Although she did take off her shoes because her feet hurt in the flats, and they were wet from the rain outside.
Soon, Bugs Bunny came into Robin's room, and asked, "is Robin okay?" Barbara looked at Bugs and said, "He is fine, Alfred said he just needs some rest..." Bugs looked sadly at Robin, and said, "Poor kid... So, you must be Robin's girlfriend Barbara, eh?" Barbara nodded, and Bugs smiled and shook her hand saying, "Nice to meet you. Yep, Robin definitely chose the right girl." Barbara smiled a bit, because Bugs was so nice. "So, what's it like working with Tweety Bird?" Barbara curiously asked. She was a big fan of him, and she couldn't resist asking the old grey hare. "He's pretty easy to work with," said Bugs, "in fact he's a good friend of mine." Bugs and Barbara never left Robin's sight, and then Robin woke up, groaning and taking off the oxygen mask. "Bugs? Barbara?" he asked while groaning. "Heya doc." Bugs said, happy to see him. Barbara's heart leaped with joy as she said, "oh Robin!" She then hugged him and kissed him on the lips, tears in her eyes. "Barbara, are you okay?" Robin asked. "Yes," said Barbara, "but why did you do that? You could've gotten killed!" Bugs put his hand on Barbara's shoulder as he said, "Now Barbara, Robin had his reasons. I'm sure he didn't want anything horrible to happen to you. If the same thing happened to Lola and I were in Robin's place, I'd do the same thing." Robin nodded, agreeing as he said, "Bugs is right Babs. I didn't want Joker doing something horrible to you... I was afraid he was going to make you miserable..." Barbara hugged him tightly as she said, "oh Robin, that was so sweet of you..." Robin stroked her luscious red hair and said, "I love you so much Barbara..." He then kissed her on the lips. "I'm just glad you're okay..." said Barbara as she smiled at him, even though there were tears, but they were tears of happiness. "Me too," replied Robin as he smiled. Alfred then walked in and said, "I have good news Miss Gordon. Master Bruce has taken The Joker into custody, and has saved your father." Barbara sighed and said, "That's a relief; I was worried that something bad happened to my father....I feared the worst." Bugs looked at her and said, "Go to him Babs. I'll keep a good eye on Robin." Barbara stood up, put her shoes back on and said, "thank you Bugs Bunny. I won't be gone long." She then left to see her father while Bugs and Robin began to catch up on old times.
After reuniting with her father and assuring him that Robin would be okay, Barbara then went back to Wayne Manor, and into Robin's room. Robin dozed off while snuggled up to Skittles. "It was nice meeting ya Babs," said Bugs. "It was nice meeting you too Bugs," said Barbara. "I hope that the next time we meet, it's under better circumstances," said Bugs as he then left. Barbara then changed into some pajamas and then got into bed with Robin. She then kissed Robin on the cheek saying, "good night my Ink-Blot Dude." She then held him in her arms, and fell asleep.
The End.
