Chapter 16: What's With the Store Owner?
Casey and April pulled up to this small grocery store. They walked in and started looking around. April gasped in surprise when she ran into the strangest man she's ever seen.
"Hey, there! Name's Bernie. I just bought this place," he greeted.
"On purpose?" Casey asked.
"Finding everything you need?" Bernie checked.
"You got any spicy gummy worms?" April asked.
"Is that bait? You mean bait?" he guessed.
"It's candy," she smiled awkwardly.
"Ho-ho! I got candy!" he replied, grabbing a jar.
"What kind?" April wondered.
"Brown. But it used to be yellow," Bernie answered.
Casey walked behind the register and saw a book.
"Ob obturaculum som Somniorum?" he sounded out, reaching for it.
Bernie grabbed his arm and warned, "Nobody touches that book. Understand?"
Casey backed away cautiously. April came over with a box full of food, unaware of what just happened.
"Hey, I got what we need. Should last a few days," she said.
"So, I thought nobody lived around here," Bernie admitted.
"Why would you buy a store where you thought nobody lives?" April asked, confused.
"Eh I like my alone time," Bernie answered then added suspiciously, "The amount of stuff you're buying must be for six or seven people."
"Uh, just two. Us two. The two of us," Casey disagreed unconvincingly.
"Uh-huh. Tell me.You been tired lately? Real tired?" Bernie asked, eyeing them.
"Nope. We're fine," April replied uncomfortably and both her and Casey quickly left the store.
"Maybe it won't happen this time," Bernie shrugged, not really thinking of the worst.
