Chapter 8:Cole & Kai vs evil copies

Written by:TannaElizabeth

Cole and Kai had decided the mountains would be a good spot to head towards. Cole would be more in his element and Kai said the height of the peaks would give them a vantage point. The pair hiked on up the mountain, putting distance between themselves and the other ninja.
"So," Cole began, "what's up with you and Skylor?"
Kai sighed, "I wish I knew. It's been so hard to see her lately, and since we've defeated the Overlord she's avoided any questions about us becoming a thing."
"Sorry to hear that. I'll have to ask Celine what she knows about Skylor's thoughts on everything..."
The two continued their trek up the mountain for a while before either of them spoke for a while.
"I'm gonna go off the trail for a minute, "Kai spoke.
"Don't take too long," Cole called after him, "remember what Orano said about the copies."
Cole brought up a boulder to sit on while he waited for Kai, fiddling with his scythe.
"Alright. Let's keep going."
Cole looked up at the sound of Kai's voice, noticing the fire ninja walking towards him. Something seemed off about him though. Celine had once explained how Kai walked with the slightest limp, probably from a childhood injury. Under her guidance, Cole had been able to watch and see Kai's limp as he walked. Now, that limp was gone.
"Hey Kai, quick question. Do you remember when Celine first learned Spinjitzu?" Cole asked, hiding the suspicions in his voice.
"Oh sure," Kai answered, "I think it was a few days after she joined the team."
"Do you remember where?" Cole pressed.
"In the Monastery, of course," Kai continued, "But why does that matter?"
"Because you're not the real Kai," Cole answered, standing up and drawing his weapon. "Celine learned Spinjitzu on the Island of the Keepers. The real Kai would know that."
"Whoops, you could me," the Kai copy smirked.
"COLE! COLE!" Kai ran through the woods, screaming. "COLE THERE'S AN EVIL VERSION OF YOU AFTER ME!"
"Yeah, and I just found your evil twin," Cole answered.
As Kai positioned himself next to Cole, a copy of Cole stepped out of the trees, "You," it seethed, "will die today."
"Who are you?" Kai demanded.
"I am the Fire Emperor," his copy answered, "and you have a choice, unlike your friend. You can join my master, and regain your rightful title as the Fire Emperor, or you can die with him."
"How about option number three? We kick your butts and go home safe?" A scuffle ensued between the ninja and their copies.
"This reminds me of when we fought Garmadon's copies of us!" Cole called to Kai as he punched at his copy.
"Yeah, but we had Lloyd's help to defeat them! Now they're using his power! In fact, they have our powers!" Kai shot back as he dodged a fireball.
Turning, Cole Earth-punched the ground towards the Fire Emperor. As the boulders reached him, the copy turned to stone.
Cole returned his attention to his copy, but it was too late.
As he swiveled back, the copy faded into the shadows, "I'll be back," it hissed as it disappeared.
"That was weird," Kai answered. Cole stood stupefied at where his copy had been only seconds before.
"I'd feel a lot better if Celine were here right now," he breathed.
"Yeah, just rub it in that you have a girlfriend and I don't," Kai huffed.
"No," Cole shook his head. "She would have been able to tell us sooner when they were approaching."
"What do you suggest we do now?" Kai asked.
"Head back to the city. I'm gonna call Celine once we have service again. I wanna know if she's seen her copy yet."
