chapter 95
VIVIAN SAT ON THE PEW, LIAM SLEEPING NEXT TO HER.
She ran her fingers absentmindedly through his blonde locks that belonged to his mother as she stared at the candles that were still burning.
Washington DC. That was their next goal.
And it her, it seemed almost impossible.
It was over 600 miles away, not to mention the road blocks between here and there. They would have to find gas, find a route with the least amount of blockages, go around cities.
All in a short bus... if the vehicle even lasts that long.
"Has anyone seen Bob?" Sasha asked, interrupting the silence,
Vivian stood and glanced around, noticing that Bob's face wasn't the only one absent, "What about Carol, Marcie, and Daryl?"
"I thought Marcie was on watch." Carl commented,
Sasha went and opened the church doors, expecting to see the four of them on the steps, only to be greeted by trees.
"Shit." Rick hissed.
Vivian stayed with the kids while some of the others went searching the woods for their four missing members.
It wasn't long before the doors opened, and Sasha stalked down the aisle, towards the priest, with Rick and Tyreese behind her,
"What are you doing?" Sasha hissed at the man, who stared back in confusion, "What are you doing? This is all connected. You show up, we're being watched, and now four of us are gone.
Gabriel glanced around, staring at everyone's accusatory glares, "I... I don't... I don't have anything to do with this."
Sasha took out her knife and Vivian stood, getting ready to step in if needed. Gabriel backed away in fear while Tyreese reached for his sister,
"Sasha, put it away."
"Who's out there?" She asked,
"I...I don't have anything... to do with this." Gabriel continued to stutter nervously,
"Where are our people?" Sasha growled in his face,
"I don't have anything to-"
"Where are our people?!" She screamed, waking Liam and Judith,
Vivian watched her carefully as she went over to comfort the toddler.
"Please," Gabriel held his hands up in surrender, "I don't have anything to do with this. I-"
Rick pulled her away before approaching the priest himself, "Why'd you bring us here?"
"Please, I-"
"You working with someone?" Rick questioned him,
"I'm alone." Gabriel pleaded, "I'm alone. I was always alone."
"What about the woman in the food bank, Gabriel? What did you do to her?" Rick continued to interrogate the priest, "'You'll burn for this'." He quoted the words that were carved into the church out back, "That was for you. Why? What are you gonna burn for, Gabriel?" Rick lunged forward and grabbed Gabriel by the lapels, "What? What did you do? What did you do?!"
Gabriel broke away from Rick's grip, glancing around at all the people in the room, "I lock the doors at night. I always lock the doors at night. I always lock the doors at night." He rambled and Vivian knew he was ready to confess, "I always... They started coming, my congregation. Atlanta was bombed the night before and they were scared. They were- they were looking for a safe place, a place where they felt safe. And it was so early. It was so early. And the doors were still locked." Gabriel finally made eye contact with Rick, "You see... it was my choice. There were so many of them and they were trying to pry the shutters and banging on the sidings, screaming at me. And so the dead came for them. Women... children." His lips trembled as his eyes moved over to Vivian and Liam, "Entire families calling my name as they were torn apart, begging me for mercy." Gabriel let out a sob, "Begging me for mercy. Damning me to hell."
Gabriel wasn't a bad person, at least, not to the extent they were used to. He was just weak. A weak and scared man who hid away from the world as it fell apart.
"I buried their bones. I buried it all. The Lord sent you here to finally punish me." Gabriel fell to his knees before Rick,
"I'm damned. I was damned before. I always lock the doors. I always lock the doors." He sobbed agains the railing.
He had nothing to do with the disappearance of their group members, but he still wasn't a trustworthy man.
He'd throw them to the wolves if he could.
"There's something... there's someone outside lying in the grass." Glenn commented, staring out the window.
Vivian stood, balancing Liam on her hip as the group went outside. She could hear Sasha cry out for Bob.
Gunshots went off as Tara and Sasha carried Bob inside. Vivian froze as she noticed Bob's missing limb, a stump covered in body gauze, "Oh, my god."
Carl grabbed Judith and moved to sit next to Vivian, not wanting to be in the way as they took care of the man.
They laid him down at the front of the pews, giving him water and whatever else he needed. Sasha stayed close to his side, holding his hand tightly as he recalled what happened,
"I was in the graveyard. Somebody knocked me out. I woke up outside this place. It looked like a school." Bob panted, "It was that guy, Gareth. And five other ones."
The people from Terminus. They were still alive and they had followed them.
"They were eating my leg right in front of me. Like it was nothing. All proud like they had it all figured out."
"Did they have Marcie, Daryl, and Carol?" Rick asked him,
"Gareth said they drove off." Bob answered before groaning in pain,
"He's in pain. Do we have anything?" Sasha questioned,
"I think there are pill packets in the first aid kit." Rosita answered before moving to grab her bag,
"Save 'em." Bob stated.
Vivian was all for preserving their medical supplies, but if anybody needed some aspirin, it would be Bob right now.
The man sat up and moved the neckline of his shirt over to reveal a large bite on his shoulder, "It happened at the food bank."
Boy, he's had a rough twelve hours.
Sasha tried not to cry as she helped him lay down again, "It's okay."
Vivian reached for Carl's hand and he squeezed it, burying his face into the arm of her jacket.
"There's a sofa in my office." Gabriel spoke up for the first time since his confession, "I know it's not much, but..."
"Thank you." Sasha whispered to him,
The others stood to help Bob into the office while Rick approached the priest, "Do you know the place Bob was talking about?"
He nodded, "It's an elementary school. It's close."
"How close?"
"It's just a 10-minute walk through the woods from here, due south of the graveyard." He answered,
Judith began to cry and Vivian let go of Liam and Carl to comfort her. She lifted the baby out of the basket and rocked her gently, "Shhh, Judy, you're okay."
Carl reached into the diaper bag to grab her bottle and filled it with formula they found at the food bank before handing it over. Vivian held the baby close to her as she began to feed her,
Abraham moved to stand in the aisle, gripping his rifle, "Time for a reality check. We all need to leave for DC right now."
"Daryl, Marcie and Carol are gonna be back. We're not going anywhere without them." Rick stated,
"I respect that, but there's a clear threat here to Eugene. I need to extract his ass before things get any uglier. So if y'all won't come, good luck to you. We'll go our separate ways." The redheaded man and his girl turned towards the front door when Rick spoke up again,
"You leaving on foot?"
Abraham turned to face the group once again, "We fixed that damn bus ourselves."
Rick began to approach him, "There are a lot more of us."
"You want to keep it that way? You should come." Abraham replied,
"Marcie and Carol saved your life." Rick responded, "We saved your life."
"Well, I am trying to save yours." Abraham raised his voice and Liam whimpered, "Save everyone's!"
Liam cuddled into Vivian's side, clutching her jacket. She let Judith hold her own bottle while using her now free arm to comfort her kid.
"We're not going anywhere without our people." Rick stated calmly,
"Your people took off." Abraham replied,
"They're coming back." Their leader insisted,
"To what, picked-over bones?!" He yelled,
"You're not taking-" Rick reached for his gun and Abraham pushed him off,
"Do not lay hands!"
Vivian handed Judith off to her brother before standing, leaving Liam with the Grimes boy. She stalked towards the two men, "Hey!" She pushed them away from each other before turning to the redhead beef brain, "Do you really think that you're gonna be any safer leaving right now in the middle of the night?"
"Yeah." Abraham grunted,
"Yeah, you may think that now, but you may not think that in a few days when those people are still following you, waiting to strike. Six against two? I think they can handle those odds."
"Three." Eugene corrected and Vivian glanced back over at the man with the outdated haircut,
She's only spent a few days with the man, but she knew he couldn't fight. He wouldn't be able to take out a crawler, let alone a group of cannibals who are out for revenge,
"Like I said... six against two." She turned back to Abraham, "You need us. You wouldn't have stayed this long if you didn't."
Glenn approached them, "What about tomorrow? We need each other for this. We need each other to get to DC. We can get through all of it together."
Tara stepped forward, in between Glenn and Abraham, "I have an idea. If you stay just one more day and help, I'll go with you to DC no matter what." She turned to look at Rick and the others, "Okay?"
Abraham nodded, "Glenn and Maggie, too."
"No." Rick stated,
"Good luck, then." Abraham kept his gaze on Rick, "I'm not interested in breaking up what you have here. Rosita, grab your gear."
"Abraham-"
"Now." He ordered, "Eugene, let's go." The other man didn't move, "Eugene. Move it."
"I don't want to." Eugene stated, avoiding eye contact,
"Now."
"Okay." Vivian rolled her eyes as the man stood from the pew and made his way towards Rosita. They began to walk to the door once more before Rick spoke,
"You're not taking the bus."
"Try to stop me."
Rick began to approach him again and Abraham handed his gun off to Rosita, prepared for a fist fight. Glenn went to stop Abraham while Vivian grabbed Rick's arm,
"Hey, hey, hey!" Glenn turned to Abraham, "You stay... you stay and help us, and we will go with you." He motioned to Maggie and himself,
"No." Rick tried to stop them,
"It's not your call." Glenn told him, "You stay, help us."
Abraham thought about it for a moment before nodding, "Half a day. Come high noon, we're taillights. I'm not waiting for the other damn shoe to drop."
"And we will leave with you." Maggie stated,
"12 hours. Then we go."
Vivian sighed, running her hands through her hair as she gave Rick,
"We just found each other... how many groups are we gonna separate into?" She asked him before going back over to the kids,
What are the chances they can all come back together?
