chapter 91

VIVIAN WATCHED AS TYREESE LAID A BLANKET INSIDE A COOLER BEFORE LAYING THE BABY INSIDE.

She instructed Liam to stay on the far side of the cabin, away from the man. She gave him a toy to keep him distracted for the situation at hand,

"She got a name?" The man asked them, but Vivian chose to ignore him, "Hey, she got a name?"

"Judith." Tyreese answered and Vivian narrowed her eyes at the larger man,

"I'm Liam!" The toddler spoke up and Vivian hushed him,

The man glanced at Vivian, "They your kids or something?"

"She's a friend." Tyreese answered,

"Huh." The man sighed, "I don't have any friends. I mean, I know people. They're just assholes I stay alive with. The other ones your friends? The women?"

Once again, Vivian refused to answer, only standing by the door with her arms crossed while Tyreese entertained the man's words,

"I used to have them. Used to watch football on Sundays. Went to church." He scoffed out a laugh, "I know I did. But I can't picture it anymore. It's funny how you don't even notice the time go by. Horrible shit just stacks up day after day. You get used to it."

"I haven't gotten used to it." Tyreese stated,

"Of course you haven't. You're the kind of guy who saves babies. It's kind of like saving an anchor when you're stuck without a boat in the middle of the ocean." The guy commented and Vivian narrowed her eyes at him,

Judith wasn't a burden. Liam wasn't a burden.

They were a reason to live, in her eyes. Without them, she would've been dead by now. She wouldn't have fought so hard to live.

"Been behind some kind of walls, right? You're still around, but you haven't had to get your hands dirty. I can tell."

"We've gotten our hands plenty dirty." Vivian spat.

His eyes moved to hers, "You, I know you have. But him? See, you're a good guy."

"You have no idea about the things I've done." Tyreese stated,

"You're a good guy. That's why you're gonna die today. It's why she's gonna die today. It's why the kids are going to die."

Tyreese stood, a hard look in his eyes. Like Vivian, he would do anything to keep the kids alive.

"Or... you can get in that car, get out of here, keep on being lucky."

"You think you're gonna kill me?" Tyreese approached him,

"Why haven't you killed me?" The man smirked, "How does having me alive help you? Why the hell are you even talking to me? Take the kids, take the car, and go." He leaned back agains the wall, "I don't want to do this today."

He had a point. Why were they there? Why was this man alive?

If things go south, they could use him as some sort of exchange. To get their people back.

He could give them information about Terminus.

But was he really that important?

A loud explosion distracted Vivian from her thoughts. Both her and Tyreese went over to the front windows to see black smoke filling the air only a few miles away,

"Is that Terminus?" The man asked, trying to see through the window,

"Yeah." Tyreese answered, "Probably."

The man leaned back and sighed, "Maybe you're gonna win this. Maybe your friends...  I mean, maybe those women just got capped. Maybe I'm gonna be the one who gets capped when she comes back."

"Nobody's got to die today." Tyreese stated, still staring out the window,

He scoffed, "Man, if you believe that... then it's definitely gonna be you and the kids. Even if that place is burning to the ground."

Vivian turned at the sound of growling. Walkers had begun to approach the cabin, "Tyreese..." The man approached her before there was the sound of scuffling and Judith crying.

The man crouched over the cooler, his hands on Judith's head, and Vivian reached for her gun. "Back off!"

Then she realised... Marcie had her gun.

The sound of crying attracted more walkers and Vivian swallowed nervously. That man wouldn't kill a baby... would he?

"Put your weapons on the ground. Kick them over right now." He demanded as the walkers continued to pound on the windows, "Right now!"

"Mama..." Liam whimpered, grabbing onto Vivian's leg,

She placed her knife on the ground and kicked them over with Tyreese's gun,

"Please, don't hurt her." Vivian begged,

Liam began to cry and she grabbed his hand, trying to comfort him the best she could at that moment,

"Go outside." The man demanded and the two shared a look, "Go outside! Just one twist, man."

"Don't!" Tyreese called out,

"Don't make me!"

Judith continued to cry and Vivian lifted Liam into her arms.

"Go outside. All three of you."

The toddler cried into her shoulder and Tyreese reached for the doorknob, "Run for the car." He told the woman,

The door opened and a walker lunged for them. Tyreese screamed as he pushed the walker away. Vivian kicked the nearest rotter and Tyreese pushed her off the porch.

She landed on her back with Liam on top of her, still crying. She shuffled backwards as walkers approached her. Vivian stood and ran over to the car, placing Liam inside, "Stay here!" She shut the door quickly before turning back to the walkers,

She grabbed one and slammed its' head against the trunk of the car until the brains were scattered across the chipped paint.

Tyreese was at the bottom of the steps, also smashing in as many heads as he could. She ran over to help, stopping a rotter from grabbing him from behind. She used her boot to cave its' skull in.

Once the last rotter was dead, Tyreese broke the cabin door in. He grabbed the man and lifted him before slamming him onto the floorboards.

Tyreese grabbed his knife and placed it against his throat, "Yeah. That's how it works."

"I won't." He glanced back at Vivian, "Get Judith out of here."

Vivian was quick to grab the baby from the cooler, comforting her and bouncing her on her hip before going back to the car, where Liam was still crying.

She climbed into the back and Liam was quick to jump into her arms. She held the two children in her arms, telling them that they were going to be okay,

"The monsters are gone." She whispered into Liam's hair, "They're gone, baby. You're okay."

Once the kids had settled down, Vivian opened the car door. She slid out before helping Liam out of the car. She placed Judith on her hip and grabbed Liam's hand before walking over to the porch, "Tyreese...?"

"Don't come in." He stated, "I'll be out in a minute."

Vivian nodded, knowing he couldn't see her. She didn't want know if he had beaten the man to death or not.

Though she hoped he did. She wanted it to be over.

She spotted something out of the corner of her eye and turned to see a group of people walking towards them as Tyreese stepped out with their bags.

Marcie and Carol was leading them, but was quickly overtaken by a familiar face.

Vivian smiled as Rick and Carl ran towards them. She bounced the young child on her hip, "Look who it is, Judy."

She let go of Liam's hand for a moment to hand Judith off to Rick as they reached her. Rick clutched the baby to his chest, kissing the top of her head while Carl held her tiny hand.

Sasha ran to greet her brother, crying as she hugged the larger man.

Vivian smiled at all of them, happy to be together again. Carl wrapped his arms around her, "Thank you." He sobbed,

She cupped his face, "Oh, are you crying?" She wiped away his tears.

Carl stepped away with a sniffle and Rick handed Judith off to her older brother before turning to Vivian. She opened her mouth to speak but Rick cut her off by cupping her jaw and placing his lips on hers,

"Didn't see that one coming." Marcie commented, her eyebrows raised.

Glenn smacked her arm gently, "Leave them be."

"Ew." Carl smiled, leading Liam and Judith away from the two adults, who seemed caught up in their own world.

Vivian pulled back, a blush spreading across her cheeks, "Hello to you, too." She whispered, staring up into Rick's bright eyes.

They had all found each other once again.
