chapter 86

THE SUN ROSE, AND THE GROUP OF NOW SEVEN CONTINUED THEIR WAY INTO THE WOODS, WITH NO PARTICULAR DESTINATION IN MIND.

"Look," Mika's excited voice grabbed the adults' attention, "grapes. Can we eat them?"

The three adults glanced at each other, worried the grapes might be poisonous. But Marcie gave the girl a nod, "Yeah, they're good." She remembered finding them in the woods with Daryl and he gave her some to snack on,

Mika began to hand out the grapes, and Vivian made sure to cut a few in half with her knife before letting Liam eat his portion.

Judith began to squirm in Marcie's arms before letting out a cry. The older girl wrinkled her nose, "I think someone needs a new diaper."

Vivian took the lead, having the most experience with diapers. She laid Judith down onto her blanket and began to unbutton the baby's outfit, "It's okay. All right." She cooed as Judith continued to fuss, "Bear with me, Judith."

"They're gonna hear her." Mika complained,

"She can't help it." Vivian told the girl, "She's just a baby, she doesn't have another way to communicate yet."

Lizzie took the dirty diaper and threw it into the trees away from them. Vivian was quick to button Judith's clothes before holding her close to her torso, but the baby continued to cry,

"You're all right. Come on. It's all right. I know. I know." She bounced her slightly and sighed as Judith still cried, "All right, what do you want?"

There was some rustling coming from the woods and Mika gasped, grabbing onto Tyreese, "They're coming!"

"I heard it, Mica!" Tyreese snapped at her,

Marcie was quick to grab Liam's hand, wanting to be able to feel him to ensure he stuck close to the group,

"Don't yell at her. She doesn't understand walkers." Lizzie scolded the man,

"You're the one who doesn't understand them." The younger sister replied,

Tyreese grabbed his hammer and began walking towards the source of the noise. Vivian continued to bounce Judith, trying to quiet her down while Marcie shuffled Liam over to Lizzie and Mika before grabbing the gun from her waistband.

Crows flew from a bush and Mika ran away, startled. Lizzie called out for her sister, and the group ran after the young girl.

"Mika!" Vivian called out to the girl, not hearing a response,

"She's gone." Lizzie panted, "You yelled at her and now she's gone."

Vivian rolled her eyes before she continued, "Mika!" She came to a stop as she spotted the blonde standing beside a tree. She handed Judith off to Tyreese before kneeling down in front of  the girl, "Are you okay?"

Mika stared down at the ground with guilt, "I got scared."

Vivian gave her a small, comforting smile, "That's okay. We all get scared. You did the right thing running."

Lizzie gave her a wide eyed look, "What?"

"Mhmm." Vivian nodded, glancing between the two sisters, "She did. You hear or see a walker, you run. But when you're in a group, you got to try to stay close to them, okay?"

Mika gave her a short nod, "I'm sorry. I know I'm not like Lizzie."

"Don't be sorry. You each do things your own way." Vivian comforted her,

"But you both get it done." Tyreese added, handing Judith back over to the brunette,

"Like you and Sasha?" Mika asked, looking over at the large man,

"You're not like Sasha." Lizzie stated,

"Why not?"

"Because you're still here. Sasha isn't." The older sister answered.

Tyreese's face fell and Marcie went to comfort him. Just because Sasha wasn't with them, doesn't mean she didn't make it out of the prison.

But before she could place her hand on Tyreese's arm, a scream echoed through the trees. The three adults shared a look, coming up with a plan silently.

Marcie set Liam down and Vivian was quick to shuffle the girls close together. She kept the kids huddled together, handing Judith off to Lizzie, "What are you doing?" Lizzie asked, looking around at all of them,

"I'm making sure you can see in both directions." Vivian stated before looking over at the others, "Go."

"You're leaving us?" Mika questioned in a panic,

"I'm staying right here." Vivian told her, taking out her knife, "But I need you guys to keep a look out. They may be from the prison. And Tyreese and Marcie can help them."

Marcie and Tyreese sprinted through the trees, following the sound of the screams. The trees soon cleared to reveal a set of train tracks, and a group fighting off a bunch of walkers.

On the ground laid a woman who was being torn apart, which Marcie assumed was the one screaming. The other two men were the last ones standing, each one taking on three walkers.

Marcie used the butt of her gun to knock down one of the rotter before using her boot to smash its' skull completely.

"Ah! Dad!" She turned to see the younger man get bit multiple times, crying out for his father as he collapsed.

"Christopher!" The father called out,

"Watch out!" Tyreese warned him as a rotter latched onto the father's neck,

Marcie watched as Tyreese took out the last walker and the man stumbled over to her son's body, which had faded due to the blood loss.

The man let out a sob, "Stay on the tracks. That was my mistake."

"But the woods have more cover." Marcie stated, grabbing her gun,

"No, you don't understand. There's a place up the tracks. It's safe." He told them, "Trust me. Please. Follow the tracks." He pointed in the direction the 'safe place' was in,

Marcie nodded and walked over to him, holding the gun up to his head, "Thank you." He sobbed one last time before she pulled the trigger.

She reached down and grabbed the large hunting knife the man had and used it to stab his son through the head, preventing him from turning, before doing the same on the woman.

At least they were at peace. Together.

"Mommy." Liam whined, gripping Mika's hand, "Monsters!"

Vivian turned to see walkers approaching them. She was quick to raise her knife and put them down.

"Vivian!"

More walkers came through the trees. Vivian stood in front of the kids, shielding them. She gripped the knife tightly in her hands, ready for a fight.

But it never came.

The walkers collapsed, revealing a woman standing there.

"Carol." Vivian whispered.

"Carol!" Mika and Lizzie sprinted forward and wrapped their arms around the older woman. She took Judith from Lizzie's arms before hugging the sister's, "We thought you were gone forever!" Mika grinned up at her,

"Thank you." Vivian stated, "For your help."

Carol nodded, "Is it just you and the kids?"

The brunette shook her head, "Marcie and Tyreese are with us, too. We heard some screams, they went to help."

"I heard them, too. Is it someone from the prison?" Carol asked,

"I'm not sure." Vivian put her knife away and lifted Liam into her arms.

A gunshot echoed through the woods and the women looked at each other before they began to rush towards the source of the noise.

They got to the train tracks, spotting the pile of bodies that laid in the dirt. Marcie put her gun away before turning to them,

"Carol..."

Tyreese was the first to walk up to her, and Vivian grew nervous. She didn't know if Karen's murderer was revealed to the man, but as he wrapped his arms around her, she knew Rick never got to tell him,

"How... how... How'd you find us?" Tyreese pulled away, "Where were you? How'd you-"

"She heard the screams, too." Vivian answered for her,

Marcie motioned to the train tracks, "He said there was a community down the tracks. That it was safe."

"How can we trust his word?" Carol asked,

"He was dying. He had no reason to lie." Marcie replied,

Vivian nodded, adjusting Liam on her hip, "Our people could be there." She suggested,

"Then let's go." Carol placed her hand on Lizzie's back, herding the girls towards the tracks.

Marcie stared down at the man's bloody corpse before following the others. They only got about a mile down the tracks before Carol paused, "Hey, there's some water in there. And some food." She kept an arm around Judith while shouldering her pack off and holding it towards Tyreese.

The large man dug through the pack before handing the kids some granola bars. Vivian set Liam down onto his feet before opening the wrapper for him and handing it over,

"I didn't see you get out." Tyreese spoke to Carol, "I thought you..."

Carol and Vivian shared a look before the older woman spoke, "I wasn't there. I hadn't gotten back yet. Rick and I found a car. He took what we had back to the prison while I... kept looking."

"Did you see it?"

"I saw the end." She answered, "And then... I saw you running into the woods. You were far away. I lost you, but..."

"You found us." Mika grinned,

"I knew you would." Lizzie told her,

Marcie took a few steps forward and filled one of Judith's bottles full of water, scooping some of her formula inside before shaking it, "I got her." She mumbled to Carol, who handed the fussing baby over.

"C'mon, guys, let's keep going. Let's hope we'll find shelter before dark." Vivian ushered the kids forward, and Tyreese picked Liam up,

"Hey, maybe we can circle back and find your car." Tyreese suggested to Carol,

"The walkers and the fire.... you can't go back to a graveyard." Carol reasoned,

Marcie's heart dropped at the word. Graveyard. That's what the prison was to them now. It wasn't home, it was now a place of death and destruction.

They had just gotten to a bridge when Lizzie turned back to them, "Look."

There was a map taped to a sign, with the words 'TERMINUS' written on it with a star that marked it. Above was another sign,

"Sanctuary for all. Community for all. Those who arrive survive." Mika read,

Marcie could only hope that her family was there, waiting for them.
