chapter 80
THE GROUP CAME ACROSS A MECHANIC SHOP, WITH TREES AND DEBRIS LITTERED AROUND THE BUILDING.
It was obvious that nothing living had raided it yet, so for them, it could be a jackpot. A car inside, with the tools needed to get it running.
Marcie looked around for the front door when she heard Bob ask, "You see something?"
She turned to see Daryl squinting at a large patch of fallen branches, "I don't know. Maybe."
He put his crossbow on his back before pulling at the branches. It didn't take long for Marcie to see what he found. A van.
They began to help clear the debris, revealing more and more of the vehicle underneath. Daryl handed Marcie his crossbow before getting into the passenger seat and attempted to hot wire the car,
He got out a few minutes later with a sigh, "We gotta find us a new battery."
There was a window next to him and he went to spit on it to gaze through the dirty glass, only to be spooked by the walkers inside that tried to reach for him, "Got some friends inside. Come on."
Marcie handed him his weapon back before they went around to the front door. Or, at least, where the front door should have been, but was blocked by a wall of this bushes.
"Let's clear a path, see how many we got." Daryl ordered, making sure Marcie was in the spot next to him before they began to pull at the leaves,
Except for Tyreese. He was hacking away with his machete angrily. He was using unnecessary energy, energy he should be saving for a real fight.
"Hey, man, go easy." Daryl called out after noticing everyone watching the larger man, "We don't know what we're dealing with."
Tyreese's blade got stuck somewhere in the hedge, and he struggled to get free. Once he did, they all noticed the wires and lock on the edge of his blade.
"You good?" Marcie asked, staring at the man,
Suddenly, she let out a gasp as a rotting arm reached for her through the bushes. Daryl quickly pulled her back and Michonne cut the arm off with her katana.
Rotters began poking out of the bushes, reaching for them. Marcie quickly jumped out of Daryl's arm and stabbed the walker in the head before turning to Bob and Tyreese, who were dealing with their own biters,
Michonne helped Bob while Marcie noticed that Tyresse had gotten ahold of the walker in front of him, not the other way around.
"Ty!" Daryl called out, noticing the same thing,
"Ty, let him go." Michonne ordered.
Tyreese pulled the walker from the bushes, falling backwards onto his back. The walker followed suit, landing on top of the man and trying to take a chunk from him,
Daryl was quick to pull the biter off of him and Marcie stabbed it in the head. She let out a sigh and turned to Tyreese, who was still on the ground, "Why the hell didn't you let go?"
Michonne and Marcie stayed outside with Tyreese while Bob went into the shop with Daryl. The three of them continued to hack away at the bushes around the van, wanting to get to the vet school as soon as possible,
"You should have let him go." Michonne commented, watching Tyreese aggressively pull at the branches,
He stopped and turned to approach her, "The hell you know about it, huh?" Marcie grew nervous and tightened her grip on her knife, "You the damn expert?"
"No." Michonne answered, "I just don't want to see you die. Is that what you're trying to do? Do you even know what you're trying to do?" Tyreese turned his gaze to the vines on the ground, "I know you're pissed. And you have every reason to be. But anger makes you stupid. Stupid gets you killed."
"Aren't you still angry about the Governor?" Tyreese flickered his eyes between the two girls, "What he did?"
"If he was here right now, I'd cut him in two. 'Cause that's how it needs to be. But I'm not angry." Michonne's eyes met Marcie's, "I was."
"Then why are you still going out looking for him?" Marcie asked quietly,
Michonne thought about it for a moment before sighing, "I don't know."
Once the boys came back out, Marcie went inside to find some supplies. Medicine, food, water, anything really. There was some ibuprofen, even tampons that she knew would be useful back at the prison and stuffed them into a plastic shopping bag.
She heard the car start and a whistle before she stepped out. Bob was sitting in the driver's seat and Daryl closed the lid, "Let's go."
With the help of a working car, they managed to make it to the vet college before sundown. Tyreese held the map in his hand that Hershel drew, "Looks like we're gettin' closer."
"The building we want is just up ahead." Tyreese commented,
Daryl led the group into the college building, while Bob held up the rear. Marcie paused in the doorway of the classroom as the others filed in.
It reminded her of the day it all started. The day she was left to fight this world alone. The day she lost her best friend, her family.
"You okay?" Michonne looked back at Marcie,
Daryl turned to look at her. She never really told him about her time before the Atlanta group. Hell, she never really even thought about it until now.
"Yeah." She nodded, "Yeah, I'm good." Marcie cleared her throat and stepped forward, "Let's hurry this up."
They walked into a back closet, which had a cabinet filled with pills. A few of them moved forward to sort through the bottles while Tyreese and Daryl went to grab other supplies that they needed,
"Anything ending with -cillin or -cin, C-I-N, grab it." Bob ordered, "We'll dissolve the pills in the IVs, put 'em right into the bloodstream. Dosage will be tricky but considering the time we lost..."
The other two meant walked in with full bags, "How'd you do?" Bob asked,
"Bags, tubes, clamps, connectors." Tyreese listed off, "Everything on the list."
"What about y'all?" Daryl asked,
"Yeah, we got it all." Bob answered,
Michonne and Marcie double checked before nodding, "Yeah. We're good."
"All right, let's roll."
They grabbed their bags and headed out into the dark hallways. Daryl followed the exit signs, the group following closely while being as quiet as possible.
A lone walker spotted them, but not having the time nor wanting to waste any energy on it, they rushed to the end of the hallway.
The next room they went into was completely pitch black. Bob tried to shut the door behind them, but was struggling, "Hey," He whispered, "Door's busted."
Tyreese and Daryl went to deal with the door as more walkers piled up while Michonne looked around, "There." She motioned to the sign pointing towards the stairwell,
Before they reached the door, a walker jumped out from the darkness and attacked Tyreese. He bashed its' head in before catching up with the others.
The door was chained shut and as Michonne reached for it, hands reached through the gap towards them,
"How many?" Daryl asked,
"I can't tell."
The door they just came through busted open, and more walkers began to pile in,
"Shit." Marcie hissed,
They were surrounded, with no way out. The only way would be to fight.
Tyreese went to approach the walkers, "We can take 'em."
"No!" Bob stopped him, aiming his gun towards the door, "They're infected. Same as at the prison. We fire at 'em, get their blood on us, breathe it in. We didn't come all this way to get sick."
He had a point. If they got sick and didn't make it back to the prison... then it was a wasted trip and more people would die.
"How do we know the ones in there aren't any different?" Tyreese questioned him,
"We don't." Michonne stated, trying to get a look at the walkers behind the chained doors.
"Well, it's gotta change sometime." Daryl broke the leg off a chair and jammed it into the chains. Marcie turned back towards the approaching walkers, her flashlight shining on the blood that streamed down their rotting faces.
She gulped nervously as Daryl spoke, "Ready?"
"Do it!"
Daryl broke the door opened and Bob fired the first shot. Michonne then used her katana to slide the heads of multiple walkers, clearing the path for them,
"Come on." The redneck lead them into the next room, away from the infected walkers.
They weren't near any emergency exits, and when they came across a stair well, the only direction to go was up.
Once on the second floor, they took a sharp right and ran down to the end of the hallway, with Bob pushing chairs and cabinets over to make it harder for the biters to follow.
Michonne tried to open a door that was labelled 'stairwell', but it was locked, "Don't have an exit."
Daryl tried to kick the door open, but it must've been blocked on the other side, "Then we make one."
Marcie climbed onto a small ledge, noticing a flat surface outside the window that they could climb out onto, and used the butt of her knife to try and break the glass, "C'mon!"
"Get down!" She turned to see Tyreese holding a fire extinguisher. Daryl quickly pulled her down in time for the larger man to throw it into the window, smashing the glass.
"Come on, move it!" Daryl grabbed her hips and helped her out onto the roof, "Jump down to the walkway below."
Michonne was quick to follow and Marcie stared down at the horde of walkers below, "C'mon." Michonne tugged the younger woman's arm,
They began to move, the men following behind. Bob's jump was a little too eager and he fell onto his stomach, his bag falling off the roof.
He gripped onto the strap, but the walkers on the ground below were pulling on it,
Tyreese ran back to help pull Bob up, "Bob, let it go." Michonne insisted,
"Let it go, man."
Marcie watched as Bob swung the bag up, having it land on the roof with a clang. Everyone stared at the bag as it didn't sound like it was full of medicine.
Daryl slowly walked over, reaching into the bag and pulling out a bottle of whiskey. He stood and faced the man, "You got no meds in your bag? Just this?"
Marcie didn't even notice him not stuffing his bag. How? She was in the same room as him.
Why did he come on this trip and not grab anything they needed?
"You should have kept walking that day."
Daryl went to throw the bottle off the roof but Bob reached for his gun, "Don't."
The hunter noticed and approached the man, getting up into his face, silently threatening him. Daryl took the gun from Bob's holster before pushing him back slightly and grabbing his shirt.
Marcie took a step forward, "Daryl-"
"Just let it go, Daryl." Tyreese interrupted, "The man's made his choice. Nothing you can do about it. Just gotta let it go."
Bob avoided eye contact. "I didn't want to hurt nobody. It was just for when it gets quiet."
Daryl shoved the bottle into Bob's chest, "Take one sip before those meds get in our people, I will beat your ass into the ground. You hear me?"
He tucked Bob's gun into his waistband before grabbing his bag and they moved to jump off the roof, no one bothering to see if Bob was following.
Once they got back to the car and they were in the clear, Tyreese and Michonne got out the map, placing it on the hood of the car to find a different route back to the prison.
Bob was standing away from the car, smoking a cigarette.
Daryl was in the passenger seat, staring at the jasper rock he grabbed for Miss Richards. Marcie sat in the seat in the row behind, just watching him.
He was so incredibly selfless, Marcie had noted over the months they spent together. Of course she noticed when she first spent time with him on the farm, when he was searching for Sophia, but after getting to the prison, she was able to learn even more about him.
He was always risking himself. Never put himself first. Even when she was mad at him, he took care of her.
And he took care of the people at the prison too. People he didn't even know, they ask him for something, and he tries his best to get it for them.
It made her love him more.
He deserved the world but she wasn't sure she could give it to him.
She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn't notice the others get into the car.
Michonne sat in the driver's seat, staying silent for a moment, "You were right, what you said before. About the trail going cold. I don't need to go out anymore."
"Good."
