chapter 79

MARCIE WAS SILENT AS DARYL DROVE THE 50 MILES TOWARDS THE VET COLLEGE.

She was in the passenger seat, with Michonne, Tyreese, and Bob in the back. Poor Michonne was cramped back there, but Marcie had the 'boyfriend' advantage.

It seemed like no one wanted to speak. The tension in the air was thick.

Daryl glanced back at Michonne, "Hey, I know you weren't runnin' off. The thing is, that trail went cold. You know that, right? If it was any different, I'd be right out there with ya."

Marcie clenched her fists and stared out the window. Of course, Daryl would be out there looking for the Governor. But her? No, she wasn't allowed.

Michonne and Daryl have emotional ties with him. He killed Daryl's brother, and he killed Andrea.

But he didn't tie them up and kill their loved ones right in front of them. No... he did that to Marcie.

Marcie deserved to be out there. She deserved to put a bullet in his head.

No, that would be too easy. She'd cut his chest open, and rip out his heart. After all, that's what he did to her.

Daryl glanced over to Marcie and reached over, attempting to unclench her fist. She ripped her hand away, crossing her arms over her chest.

He stared at her for a moment before moving his hand over to the radio and turned it on, "Would ya hand me one of them CDs right there?"

Marcie sighed and reached into the glove box, grabbing the CD holder. As Daryl was changing radio stations, they heard a faint voice,

"...find sanctuary."

Marcie reached forward and stopped Daryl's hand, "Wait..."

"...determined to survive... ...keep alive."

"Was that a voice?" Bob asked,

Daryl shushed him and continued to change the station, trying to find the right one so the voice would come in clear.

"Terminus."

Marcie and Daryl shared a look before she glanced towards the road, "Daryl!"

The car swerved, Daryl trying to avoid hitting the walkers that were roaming on the road. Ahead, there was a horde, and Marcie's heart rate skyrocketed.

He hit the brakes, one arm braced against Marcie's chest. The car came to a stop and the walkers quickly surrounded them.

There had to be hundreds.

And she had no clue how they were going to get out of there.

Was this it? Was everyone at the prison going to die because they couldn't get to the medicine?

"Grab somethin'!" Daryl demanded before turning around, placing a hand on the back of Marcie's headrest and hitting the reverse.

But of course it wasn't that easy. Walkers ended up underneath the tires, causing them to slip and the car got stuck.

He tried going forward, but it didn't work.

"We're jammed up." Daryl pointed out the window tot the right of the car, "Make a run for the gaps right there. Ya make a run for the woods and ya don't stop for nothin', you hear me?"

Daryl placed a hand on the back of Marcie's neck, forcing her to look at him, "Ya keep goin', alright?"

She nodded before unbuckling her seatbelt and reaching for her hunting knife. Daryl went through the sunroof while Marcie, Bob, and Michonne jumped out of the right side of the car.

Michonne and Marcie swung at the biters near them, the samurai slicing off their heads while Marcie would duck and stab from behind.

Bob was behind them, firing off bullets.

And Tyreese was still in the car.

Michonne continued to clear the path in front of them and Marcie paused, turning to face the car, "Ty! Watchu waitin' for?!"

"Marcie, c'mon!" Daryl grabbed her arm and began to pull her towards the trees,

They came to a stop next to Michonne and they watched as walkers surrounded Tyreese, "No!" Marcie went to go help, but Daryl held her back,

"C'mon." Walkers were heading towards them, "It's too late."

It didn't matter where they ran, there were biters waiting for them. The four of them continued taking them out until they came to a small clearing in the woods, where Daryl paused, "Hold up."

The trees towards the edge of the clearing began to shake, and Daryl was waiting to see if Tyreese would appear. When two walkers came out of the trees, he raised his crossbow.

One of the walkers went down, and Tyreese stepped out into the clearing, covered in brains and black blood.

Marcie let out a sigh of relief. She couldn't lose another person right now.

Tyreese fell to his knees and the boys went to grab him while Marcie and Michonne took care of the other walkers. More came towards them and they took off in a run once again,

Vivian was going crazy. Locked in the room for days on end, only getting food when Carl left it outside the door... it was enough to make anyone go insane.

Judith was getting fussy and Vivian paced back and forth with the young girl in her arms. She bounced her slightly, trying to comfort her.

"I know, honey, I know." Vivian shushed her as Judith whined, "We'll be out of here soon."

There was a knock at the door and the three inhabitants of the room turned to see the outline of a man at the door, "Rick?" Vivian approached it slowly, "Is something wrong?"

Rick hesitated, "I... I'm going on a run. We need medicine, something to hold us over until Daryl and the others get back." He explained,

"Alone? Rick, you can't-"

"No, not alone. I'm going with Carol." He told her,

Carol? Not that she couldn't handle it or anything, but she wouldn't be the first on her list to take on a run.

"No, let me go with you. Beth hasn't been exposed, I'm sure she can look after the kids-" Vivian began before Rick interrupted her,

"Carol killed Karen and David."

Vivian's mouth dropped open slightly. Never in her wildest dreams would she expect Carol to murder innocent people, "... you're sure?"

Rick nodded, even if Vivian couldn't see him, "Yeah... yeah I'm pretty sure. I need to take care of it before Tyreese comes back."

Vivian got nervous. Rick hadn't taken a leadership role since the battle with Woodbury. And with what's been happening with him lately, she didn't want him to go off the deep end again, "No, Rick, what are you going to do? We can get the council together, separate the two. You don't have to do this."

"I need... I need to do this myself. I need to make this decision." He cleared his throat, "I'll be back. I promise." Rick whispered before walking away,

Marcie stared at Tyreese's form as he cleaned himself off in the river. He was crouched on the side, rinsing his shirt off, trying to clear the blood and guts.

He wasn't okay. Everyone knew that. And this run might be a distraction for him, but it might also get himself or others killed.

The others stood on the bridge, staring down at a map to figure out where they are and what direction they need to go in.

"This is Turner Creek, so Barnesville must be a few miles downstream." Michonne pointed out,

"Sounds like our best chance at finding a new ride." Bob commented,

"Yo, Ty!" Daryl called out to the other man, and he glanced up at them, "Come on, let's go. Vámonos."

Daryl handed Marcie her bag and they began to walk towards where they think Barnesville is.

"Ya okay?" Daryl asked, looking over at the woman,

Marcie hummed, staring down at her boots for a moment, "How many do you think have died since we've left the prison?"

He continued to stare at her, "Ya shouldn't be thinkin' about that. Not now. We're gonna save the ones we can. That's all we can do."

But what if it was too late? Marcie tried to shake the thoughts out of her head, but they always came back.

Like her nightmares.

Daryl reached over and interlocked their fingers, their star tattoos brushing together. He squeezed her hand before letting go.

He paused and kneeled down, picking up a rock before licking his fingers and trying to polish it,

"Is that jasper?" Michonne asked, coming to a stop between the couple,

"Mm-hmm." Daryl grunted, revealing the red stone,

"It's a good color. Brings out your eyes." The samurai joked,

"When Miss Richards went into A block, we were leaving. Asked me to keep a lookout. I'm gonna use it for her old man's marker." Daryl placed the stone in his pocket,

"You know all them back there?" Michonne asked him,

"You stay in one place more than a couple hours, you'd be surprised what you pick up." He commented coldly before he kept walking,

"Don't listen to him." Marcie told her friend as they continued, "He wants to be out there, too."

Michonne glanced at her, "I'm sorry he kept it from you."

She shrugged, "He did it cause he cares about me. Can't hate him for that." Marcie glanced down at her boots, kicking rocks slightly, "I wish you would stay... let others get to know you like I do. Like Andrea did."

Michonne began to walk slower, watching as Marcie caught up the Daryl, the younger girl interlacing her fingers with his.

She was glad Marcie got her happy ending, but it wasn't time for Michonne to have hers.

Not yet.
