chapter 76

VIVIAN STOOD IN THE DOORWAY OF HER CELL, WATCHING LIAM AS HE SLEPT PEACEFULLY IN HIS TOP BUNK,

Rick walked up behind her, Judith in his arms, "You tried to help her." He stated quietly, not wanting to disrupt anyone around him, "You couldn't. No one could. Some people are too far gone."

Vivian glanced back at him, 'You're not." She told him, "You tried to help her, too."

He shook his head, bouncing the baby on his hip slightly, "How that woman wound up, I got close to that. If I lost Carl and Judith, if I lost this place..."

"Not then, Rick. Not even then." Judith reached out for Vivian and she took the baby from his arms, settling her on her hip, "You came back. Carl came back." She reached out with her free hand and squeezed his wrist, "You get to come back. You do."

He stared at her for a long moment, "What you did today... in her final moments..."

"She was a good woman... kind of. She did things for the man she loved and... she didn't deserve to die alone." Vivian gave him a small smile, "Go to sleep, you've got a long day tomorrow. I'll put her down."

Rick nodded, "Goodnight, Viv."

The brunette watched him walk away, "Night." She mumbled,

Her trance was broken as Judith tugged on her hair, "Ow, okay, okay." Vivian smiled down at the baby, "How about a bottle before bed, huh? That sound fun?"

Marcella sat up in her bed with a gasp, gripping at the bedsheets below her.

"Hey, hey." Daryl was kneeled beside her, brushing her hair from her face, "'M here. Ya ain't there no more."

"You're back." Marcie mumbled, her voice still full of sleep, "When-"

"Not long ago." Daryl sat on the mattress and lifted her into his lap, "Wanted to be back sooner. 'M sorry."

Marcie gripped his vest as she stared up at his face. The run didn't go according to plan, "What happened?"

Daryl shook his head slightly, "Walkers. A horde on the roof. It collapsed." He sighed, "Lost Zack."

"'M sorry." Marcie laid her head against Daryl's shoulder, "How's Beth taking it?"

"Acted like she didn't care. Tryin' to act tough and shit. Sayin' people die all the time now a days." He mumbled,

She placed a gentle kiss to his neck as she moved her hand up his leather vest to his jaw. She forced him to look down at her and she kissed him, "It's not your fault." Marcie whispered against his lips,

"Shoulda done a better job scopin' the place."

"You couldn't have known." Marcie adjusted herself to straddle his thighs, placing her hands on both sides of his neck so he could look at her, "That's not on you." She twirled some of the longer pieces of hair around her fingers, "You do so much for us." Marcie leaned forward and gave him a more aggressive kiss,

Daryl ran his hands up her back, underneath her sleep shirt and dragged the fabric over her head, breaking the kiss.

"It's okay to rest." Marcie whispered, placing a hand to his stomach and coaxing him back down onto the mattress,

She hovered above him, placing kisses against his pulse point, going up his neck before reaching his mouth, "Let me do all the work."

"Guilty."

Marcie sat up, turning to see the Governor standing in the doorway, a gun aimed at the two of them.

"No!"

The brunette screamed as she was shaken awake. Daryl was above her, coaxing her out of her night terror.

"Yer okay." Daryl stated gently and she began to cry into his neck, "No one can hurt ya."

Marcie laid in his arms the rest of the night, staring at the far wall. For her nightmares to end, she needed the Governor dead.

And she couldn't do that with Daryl breathing down her neck, forcing her to stay at the prison.

Marcie slipped out of his arms and changed into a pair of jeans and a fresh tank top, slipping on one of Daryl's long sleeved flannels before heading out into the common room, where Michonne was looking at a map,

"Going back out there?" Marcie asked, walking over to the table to stare down at the map of Georgia,

"Dooley county next, I think." Michonne sighed, putting a few proteins bars into her bag, "Shouldn't be gone too long."

"Just... make sure he suffers, first."

"Wouldn't do it any other way." She stared at her for a moment, "You'll be okay back here?"

"Would rather be out there looking for him." Marcie sat on the table, watching Michonne pack, "Stay safe?"

"Always."

Rick's alarm clock woke Vivian up with a start. She quickly got out of bed and slipped on a pair of jeans before going to grab Judith,

"Staying behind the fences today?" Vivian asked as she settled the baby on her hip,

"For a while, I think, yeah..." Rick held out his hand as Judith wrapped hers around one of his fingers, "See you at lunch?"

She nodded, "Yeah, we got a busy agenda today, don't we, Judy?" Vivian smiled at the redhead in her arms,

Rick went to wake Carl while Vivian went back to her cell to get Liam ready for the day. She was just feeding the two kids breakfast when she heard the gunshots.

Vivian's heart dropped to her stomach.

"Walkers in D!"

She grabbed Judith and Liam, holding his hand while Judith was attached to her side, and went into the cell block, into her own cell. Vivian shut the door, making sure it was secured before closing the sheet.

As much as she wanted to help, she knew her job was to keep the kids safe first.

Marcie grabbed her gun and followed Sasha, Daryl, and Tyreese out into the courtyard after securing C Block,

"Walkers in D!" Glenn announced,

"What about C?!" Rick called out,

"Clear. We locked the gates to the tombs." Sasha answered, "Hershel's on guard."

"It ain't a breach." Daryl stated,

"We followed the plan."

Marcie came to a stop in front of Rick, "Vivian took Judith and Liam into her cell. Locked the door behind her. They're safe."

He nodded before they followed the others into D Block.

It was chaos.

How could so much happen in such a short amount of time?

People were running everywhere, evading the re-animated corpses of their loved ones. Some bodies had yet to start up again, laying on the floor as blood pooled around them.

Gunshots and screams filled the air. It made it hard for Marcie to think.

She took her knife out of its' sheath in time for the first walker to attack her. She quickly put them down, lowering their body gently before helping people run out of the cell block, "Into the courtyard! Now!" Marcie yelled at them,

While the others took the bottom level, Marcie took the stairs two the second level. A walker was waiting for her at the title, and she stabbed her in the head before pushing her over the railing, wincing as her body hit the concrete,

"Sorry."

Just as quickly as its started, it was finished.

Daryl came upstairs, "Ya okay?" He asked, lowering his crossbow for a moment and squeezing her upper arm,

"'M fine." She mumbled, looking around at all the bodies,

She moved over to the cells, checking them for any lingering walkers. Marcie let out a gasp as a walker lunged for her from behind a sheet.

She grabbed its' arms, keeping its' mouth away from her flesh.

"Get down!" She heard Daryl yell,

Marcie dropped in time for an arrow to pierce the walker's head. The corpse collapsed and Marcie pushed it to the side, causing it to land in the cell once again. Daryl was quick to rush over and check her over, helping her to her feet,

"Thanks." Marcie grunted,

Rick and Glenn joined them, and the sheriff moved the sheet aside to reveal the walker,

Marcie stared down at the young man, who was alive and mostly healthy yesterday. Now his skin was pale, and his face was covered in blood,

"Oh... it's Patrick." Daryl commented,

The four of them went around, taking out those who had passed but had yet to turn. She had stepped out and turned to see Rick standing in a doorway, staring down at his small knife that was now covered in blood.

It had been a long time since he had to do something as gruesome as putting a walker down. Let alone someone you brought into the prison, somewhere you thought was safe.

How had this happened? Someone had died on the inside, turned, and caused all this chaos. But how did they die?

A few of the walkers had blood running down their faces, like Patrick. And Charlie.

He was locked in his cell when he died suddenly and had turned. And that would mean he wasn't bitten, and he wasn't wounded.

He could be their Patient Zero.

Dr. S, Bob, and Hershel were brought into the cellblock to Charlie's cell. They opened the door to let the three medical professionals inside.

"No bites. No wounds." Rick told Dr. S, "I think he just died."

"Horribly, too. Pleurisy aspiration." Dr. S stated,

"Choked to death on his own blood." Hershel translated for them, "Caused those trails down his face."

"I've seen them before on a walker outside the fences." Rick commented,

"Saw them on Patrick, too." Marcie added,

"They're from the internal lung pressure building up... like if you shake a soda can and pop the top. Only imagine your eyes, ears, nose, and throat are the top." Dr. S explained,

"It's a sickness from the walkers?" Bob asked,

"No, these things happened before they were around." Hershel replied,

"Could be pneumococcal." Dr. S stated, "Most likely an aggressive flu strain."

"Someone locked him in just in time." Hershel commented,

"Nah, man. Charlie used to sleepwalk." Daryl corrected him, "Locked himself in. Hell, he was just eating barbecue yesterdayHow could somebody die in a day just from a cold?"

"I had a sick pig, it died quick. Viv and I saw a sick boar in the woods." Rick added,

Hershel nodded, "Pigs and birds. That's how these things spread in the past. We need to do something about those hogs."

"Maybe we got lucky." Dr. S sounded hopeful... and a little scared, "Maybe these two cases are it."

"Haven't seen anybody be lucky in a long time." Bob commented, "Bugs like to run through close quarters. Doesn't get any closer than this."

"He's right." Marcie replied, "If we don't contain this, it'll spread like wildfire. Who knows how many will die."

"All of us in here, we've all been exposed."
