chapter 72

VIVIAN LEANED AGAINST THE TRUCK, HER GAZE GOING TO CARL EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.

They were about to go to Woodbury, to end it.

And Carl was sulking by the benches, wanting to go with. Hershel and Vivian tried her best to convince Rick not to let the kid go.

It had gone too far, too quick.

Daryl was ready to go, wanting to get to Marcie. She wasn't apart of the Woodbury group that had showed up to the prison, so that must mean she was still there, behind those walls.

Rick went over to talk to his son, handing her his rifle. She watched as he kneeled down to see his son's face as he spoke to him.

Vivian felt bad about yelling at Carl, but she knew he needed to hear it.

Now she was afraid he wouldn't forgive him.

Rick walked back over and Glenn and Maggie turned to him, "Rick, we're staying. We don't know where the Governor is. If he comes back, we'll hold him off."

"Just the three of us?" Daryl asked as he strapped the rifle to his back, "All right."

Rick turned to the newly engaged couple, "I appreciate you staying."

Vivian got into the passenger seat and Michonne got into the back. Carol opened up the gate and Daryl lead them out of the prison, and Rick drove behind.

"Do you think she's alive?" Vivian asked Rick,

"For Daryl and Carl's sake... I hope so." He responded, not looking over at her, "I don't think I can forgive myself if she doesn't make it."

"Neither can I." Michonne commented from the back seat.

They didn't get far down the road before they came across familiar vehicles that belonged to the Governor, abandoned on the side of the road. Both vehicles came to a stop and the four of them approached the scene slowly,

Bodies littered the field. A few had turned into walkers and had began feasting on the corpses. Michonne and Daryl went around, taking out any of the Woodbury people who had turned.

A thud caught their attention. In the large military vehicle, a woman had pressed her hands against the window. They all aimed their weapons at her and guided her out,

"He killed them." The woman stated, "He shot them all in cold blood."

The four of them exchanged looks. The Governor had officially snapped. He killed his own people.

They put the woman in the bed of the truck and headed towards Woodbury. The people there... they were innocent. They weren't apart of the Governor's schemes, and Karen defended them.

It was dark when they got to Woodbury. They left the cars a mile out, and approached on foot. If the Governor was there, they didn't want to alert them with the noise of the motorcycle and truck.

A bullet was fired and they all pulled the trigger. They hid behind a car that laid by the walls as gunshots sounded in the air.

It went silent for a moment, and Karen called out Tyreese's name.

The people that Carl had found days ago. Tyreese and Sasha. The other two men who were with them, were killed with the others.

'Karen, are you okay?" Tyreese asked out into the darkness,

"I'm fine!" Karen stood with her hands up,

"Where's the Governor?"

"He fired on everyone. He killed them all." She answered,

"Why are you with them?" Tyreese questioned her,

"They saved me."

Rick looked back at the other three before speaking up, "We're coming out!" He put his gun behind his back and stood, "We're coming out."

Michonne and Vivian glanced at each other like he was crazy before following suit. Tyreese opened the gate and the five of them walked forward, their hands up,

"What are you doing here?" Tyreese asked them as they were only feet away,

"We were coming to finish this until we saw what the Governor did." Rick answered,

"He ... he killed them?" Tyreese asked in shock, looking between Rick and Karen,

"Yeah." Rick nodded, "Karen told us Andrea hopped the wall going for the prison. She never made it. She might be here."

Daryl stepped forward, "And Marcie?"

"We haven't seen her or her parents in a few days. We assumed they jumped the wall after Andrea left." Sasha replied,

They all shared a look before Tyreese let them in. This could end very badly.

Rick led them towards the building that haunted Vivian's dreams. They entered and she led them all down the hallway, "This is where he had Glenn, Maggie, and Vivian." Rick informed the two newcomers,

"The Governor held people here?" Tyreese questioned,

"He did more than hold them." Vivian grumbled, raising her gun as they turned a corner,

They came to a door and paused. A large pool of blood sat in the doorway, coming from the other side. They didn't know who was in the room. Andrea, or Marcie. Either way, it didn't look good.

Michonne unsheathed her sword, "Will you open it?" She asked Rick,

They all raised their weapons and Rick reached for the lock on the door, "One, two..." He opened it quickly, and there laid a body on the floor.

It was one of the Governor's men.

They spotted a pair of legs laying next to the door and they rushed in to see Andrea sitting there. Michonne was the first to run to her, "Andrea!"

The woman was covered in blood, Vivian noticed as Michonne helped her sit up,

"I tried to stop them." Andrea groaned,

"You're burning up." Michonne commented,

With that, Andrea moved her vest to reveal a large bite mark on her shoulder. Vivian raised her hand to her mouth in horror,

"Judith, Carl, Liam, the rest of them..." Andrea moved her gaze to Rick,

"Us." Rick corrected, "The rest of us."

"Are they alive?" Andrea finished her question,

Rick glanced back at Daryl before nodded, "Yeah, they're alive."

Andrea turned to Michonne, "It's good you found them." Michonne's face crumpled in grief, "No one can make it alone now."

"I never could." Daryl spoke up,

"Marcie's lucky to have you." Andrea smiled at him, and no one had the heart to tell her that they didn't know where Marcie was.

"I just didn't want anyone to die." She sighed, "I can do it myself."

Michonne shook her head, "No."

"I have to." She told the samurai, "While I still can."

Tears streamed down Michonne's face as she nodded. Andrea looked up at the sheriff, "Please? I know how the safety works." She joked, referring back to the moment Rick had met the group,

Rick handed her his gun, gently placing it in her hand.

'Well, I'm not going anywhere." Michonne told her,

Andrea looked around at everyone, "I tried."

"Yeah." Rick tried to keep himself composed, "You did. You did."

Andrea had tried so hard to make things work between them and Woodbury. She had grown so much since the start, it was a shame things ended the way they did.

Vivian kneeled down and gave Andrea's hand a squeeze, "Amy's waiting."

She stood and headed towards the door, grabbing Daryl's wrist. He followed after her, knowing what they needed to do without saying a word.

They needed to find Marcie.

Rick followed after them, and they waited in the hallway. He stood next to Vivian, holding her hand as they waited for the shot.

And when it came, Vivian tried hard not to break down.

It was hard loosing someone that had been with you when shit went down.

Rick wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into his chest. And when Michonne stepped out of the room, holding Rick's gun, they knew had to move quickly.

"Guys!" Sasha called out from a corridor over, "Down here!"

Daryl was the first to make it into the room, and instead of waiting for the others, he kicked it open.

Vivian gasped at the sight.

Marcie was in the middle of the room, both hands chained up in the air, leading to pillars. She was on her knees, two bodies laying around her, their skulls bashed in.

It was her parents' corpses.

She was covered in blood. God, there was so much blood.

Marcie looked up at them, her eyes rimmed with red. She had been beaten, tortured. She barely looked alive.

"You're alive." Her raspy voice broke as Daryl dropped to his knees before her, not caring about the blood soaking into his jeans.

Tears ran down his cheeks as he brushed her hair back, some of it sticking to the dried blood on her face. He cupped her cheeks gently, telling her it was all going to be okay.

Vivian burst forward, tugging at the chains that were nailed into the concrete. Rick grabbed pliers that he found in the hallways and clipped at her restraints.

Marcie fell forward and Daryl wrapped his arms around her. She cried out in pain coming from her shoulder, which look distorted and was obviously out of place.

Darryl kissed her forehead gently and with one touch, Marcie burst into tears again. She didn't think she had any more tears to cry, but seeing Daryl and her group gave her a sense of relief.

The Governor didn't win.
