chapter 42

VIVIAN HAD A TIGHT GRIP ON LIAM AS THEY STEPPED OUT ONTO THE PORCH,

Lori and Carol came out with her after making sure Carl wasn't inside,

"I checked the shed. I can't find him anywhere." Lori panicked,

"Not in the cellar or the attic." Carol continued,

"Why can't he listen for once?" Lori groaned in frustration before they walked towards the edge of the porch, "Ok okay, if he followed his daddy, he went that way." She pointed towards the barn,

"No, you'll lead 'em right to him." Vivian told her, "We can't stay here, Lori!"

"That's my boy!" She sobbed,

The younger woman grabbed Lori's arm, "Hey, listen to me. Carl's a smart boy. If he went to find his dad, he's with him. You're gonna have to trust. And if we find him, he's gonna need his mother. We've gotta go." She turned to Carol, "Get the others."

Beth and Patricia joined them on the porch, Beth gripping Liam's diaper bag. Lori held her gun, firing at any walkers that were getting close.

Liam began crying and Vivian tried to comfort him, "You gotta be quiet, baby." She whispered to him before grabbing her knife with her free hand,

"Hershel, it's time to go!" Lori yelled out to the farmer,

Vivian wasn't sure if Hershel couldn't hear them or was just ignoring them. But it didn't matter. They needed to leave.

She needed to keep Liam safe,

"We gotta go. We gotta get out of here." Vivian stated.

Carol took the lead while Vivian was in between her and Lori. Beth and Patricia took up the end. Vivian heard screaming and turned to see walkers all over Patricia, blood flying. The dying woman had a grip on Beth, and she couldn't escape it.

Vivian handed Liam off to Lori before grabbing Beth and pulling her away.

As sad as it was, loosing Patricia, it also gave them a fighting chance. The walkers were distracted by feeding on her.

The blue pick up truck pulled up in front of them and Andrea jumped out, "Get in!"

Vivian gently pushed the three of them into the cab of the truck, "Where's Carol?"

"She went that way!" Lori pointed towards the chicken coop.

Andrea began firing at the walkers and Vivian jumped into the truck bed, taking her gun out. Walkers quickly approached them and Vivian shot at them,

They watched as a walker fell on top of Andrea, who was trying to protect Carol, "They got her!"

"We've gotta go!"

T-Dog drove off and Vivian gripped the metal, trying to keep steady. She watched as the farm got smaller.

A red light filled the air, it was a flare coming from the woods. Was it Rick, Shane, and Marcie? Possibly Carl?

The walkers turned and began heading towards the light. Whoever it was, it was possible they just saved some of them.

But either way, the one place they thought was safe, was untouched, was destroyed by the walking dead.

Daryl sat on his bike, watching the barn as it burned. He heard a scream coming from the house and he revved up his motorcycle before speeding down there,

He spotted Carol in the middle of the dirt road, and stopped the bike, "Come on! Ain't got all day!"

She moved to get on behind him and a red light lit up the night sky. He knew what it was.

Marcie was in the woods over there, and she needed him.

He drove forward but quickly came to a stop when walkers blocked the road, "What are you doing?! We need to get out of here!" Carol yelled in his ear,

"But, Marcie-"

"Daryl, you won't get through! We need to leave!"

He stared towards the woods, his jaw clenched. In the back of his mind, he knew Carol was right. He wouldn't be able to get to her.

Daryl just needed to pray that she'd make her way out. That she would survive.

It was daybreak once they reached the highway, Vivian jumped out of the back of the truck. In the red truck a few feet away, there was Hershel, Rick, and Carl. Lori handed Liam off to Vivian, who was finally sleeping.

She watched as Lori wrapped her arms around her boys.

Where was Marcie and Shane?

Vivian greeted the others, Maggie, Glenn, Carol, and Daryl, before turning to Rick, "Thank you." He whispered, wrapping an arm around her, "For getting Lori out of there."

"What happened out there?" Vivian asked,

"I'll explain later." Rick told her before looking over to Daryl, "Where'd you find everyone?"

"Well, those guys' tail lights zigzagging all over the road... figured he had to be Asian, driving like that." Daryl joked, still looking around for Marcie.

"Good one."

"Where's the rest of us?" Daryl asked,

"We're the only ones who made it so far." Rick faced him, waiting for the redneck to ask about a certain girl.

Daryl stared at him, "... Marcie?"

Carl tightened his grip on his mother, the name bringing tears to his eyes.

Rick shook his head, trying to keep tears away, "She... she saved me. But she didn't make it."

Daryl's jaw clenched. He should've gone back. He should've gone to the source of the flare.

Vivian tightened her grip on Liam. Marcie played a big role in their group. Everyone liked her, and she helped them all out. She helped Vivian with Liam all the time.

Loosing Marcie affected them. And she knew it was going to affect Daryl and Rick the most.

Lori stared at her husband, "Shane?"

All Rick could do was shake his head. He lost a lot that night. And Vivian knew something bad had happened if Rick couldn't outright say that Shane was dead.

"Andrea?" Glenn asked,

"She saved me, then I lost her." Carol explained,

"We saw her go down." T-Dog added,

"Patricia?" Hershel questioned,

Beth gripped Maggie's hand tightly, "They got her, too. Took her right in front of me. I was... I was holdin' onto her, daddy. She just..." The blonde sniffled and Hershel placed a comforting hand on his youngest's head, "What about Jimmy? Did you see Jimmy?"

"He was in the RV. It got overrun." Rick answered and Beth sobbed into her father's shirt,

"You definitely saw Andrea?" Carol asked,

"There were walkers everywhere." Lori responded,

"Did you see her?" Carol asked again,

No one answered and Daryl stepped forward, "And Marcie? Did ya see her go down?"

Rick hesitated, "Not exactly but-"

"But what? I saw the damn flare and I know y'all did, too. She could still be out there!" He walked towards his bike, "'M gonna go back."

"No." Rick responded

"We can't just leave her." He argued, "'M not gonna leave her."

"We don't even know if she's there." Lori responded,

Rick pictured the way Marcie looked before she sacrificed herself. The amount of blood she lost. How pale she was. There was no way she made it out of there, "She isn't there." He shook his head, "She isn't."

"So we're not even gonna look for her? Or Andrea?" Glenn questioned,

"We gotta keep moving. There have been walkers crawling all over here." Rick stated,

"I say head east." T-Dog commented,

"Stay off the main roads." Daryl growled, spotting a walker behind the group,  "The bigger the road, the more walkers, more assholes like this one. I got him." He grabbed his knife and stabbed the walker angrily in the skull.

He believed Rick when he said Marcie didn't make it. Rick and Marcie had been partners since nearly the beginning, since before they joined the group. He wouldn't lie and say she was dead if he thought she was alive.

But Daryl didn't have to be happy about it.
