chapter 41
MARCIE FOCUSED ON THE GRASS BENEATH HER PALMS OF HER HANDS.
It made her itchy, but that was a better feeling than being in pain.
Her heartbeat was loud in her ears. She didn't hear the other gunshots. The sobbing, the begging.
"Hey, hey," Rick kneeled down beside her, his hands hovering over her gun shot wound, "It's gonna be okay."
"Shane-" Marcie gasped out,
"He's gone. It's over. We're safe." Rick told her, "We gotta get you back to the farm."
"It hurts... is that bad? That's bad, isn't it? Is it bad?" She asked, "I'm too scared to look."
Rick glanced down at the blood that was seeping out of the hole in her abdomen, "You'll have a cool scar."
She gave him a nervous smile, "Like Carl's?"
"Yeah, like Carl's." Rick nodded, "We need to stop the bleeding."
"My flannel." Marcie whimpered in pain as Rick helped her up. They worked together to gently take off her flannel and tied it around her waist to put pressure on her wound,
"Looks like it went right through. Just need to stop the bleeding and get it stitched." Rick stated, "Can you walk?" He asked and Marcie nodded,
He kept an arm around her, giving her stability as they slowly made their way back towards the farm.
Marcie glanced at Shane's body and she shivered. Not that he didn't deserve it, but she knew it was traumatising for Rick. Shane was his best friend. They had been through a lot together.
"I'm sorry." Marcie mumbled, "That you had to do that. It shouldn't have ended that way."
"There was no other way."
They barely made it to the edge of the field when they saw a small figure, "Dad?"
Carl. It was Carl.
Had he seen everything? Seen Rick kill a man he looked up to?
The young boy lifted a gun and aimed it in their direction. Where did he get a gun from?
Rick let go of Marcie and approached his son, "Just... just put the gun down. It's not what it seems. Please."
Carl pulled the trigger and Marcie flinched, fully expecting to have another bullet enter her body. But she heard a thud behind her and turned her head to see Shane's body on the ground, in a different place where Rick left him,
He had turned. How did he turn? He wasn't bit... was he?
Rick and Carl stood on each side of Marcie, helping her keep steady as she limped along. She tried not to focus on the pain, keeping one foot in front of the other. All she had to do was get back to the farm, then she would be okay.
They'd all be okay.
"You bit, too?" Carl sniffled,
Rick and Marcie shared a look, "No."
Carl looked up at Marcie, "But you're bleeding."
"It's only a bullet wound, kid. Don't worry about it." Marcie winced as she took another step,
"Who shot you?"
"We'll explain it to everyone when we get back to the house." Rick responded for her.
"Shane was bit." Carl stated,
"That wasn't Shane. You know that." Rick replied,
Marcie wasn't sure if he was speaking to his son or himself when he said that. Before the end of the world, she was sure that Shane was a good guy. But this world changed him for the worse.
"Used to be." Carl looked up at his father, "What happened? You guys attacked? I mean, I... I heard a gunshot, but I didn't see any walkers nearby." He paused for a moment, "How did Shane die?"
They came to a stop and Rick turned to his son, "Look, Carl..."
Rick paused, and they heard growling in the distance. They all turned their heads to see a large heard of walkers heading their way,
"Oh my God!" Rick pushed his son forward, "Go, go, go!"
Marcie whimpered and hobbled along. Rick paused to lift her up and they ran from the herd. They came to a stop by the barn, Rick setting Marcie down to catch his breath,
"We... we gotta get to the house, tell the others." Carl stated,
"We'll never get through that." Rick replied, "Can't go around." He glanced around, lifting Marcie up again, "Alright. Carl, stay close. Go!"
Marcie gripped Rick's shoulder, trying to ignore the pain in her side, as he and Carl rushed towards the barn, dodging the walkers.
Vivian paced in the living room, rocking Liam and trying to get him to sleep. It was dark now, and the group had been gone for a while.
Not to mention, they heard gunshots.
"I'm going after them." Andrea stood, walking towards the door,
"Don't," Lori responded, "They could be anywhere. And if Randall com back, we're gonna need you here."
"She's right." Vivian sighed, laying Liam down on the couch.
The door opened and everyone stood, turning to see Glenn and Daryl walking into the living room,
Daryl looked around at each of their faces, "They ain't back yet?"
Vivian shook her head, "No."
"We heard shots." He stated,
"Maybe they found Randall." Lori suggested,
Daryl shook his head, "We found him."
If Daryl was the one to find him, why did the other group fire their guns?
"Is he back in the shed?" Andrea asked,
The redneck shook his head, "He's a walker."
"Did you find the walker that bit him?" Hershel asked them,
"No," Glenn and Daryl shared a look, "the weird thing is he wasn't bit."
"His neck was broke." Daryl explained,
"So he fought back." Lori suggested,
"The thing is, Shane and Randall's tracks were right on top of each other. And Shane ain't no tracker, so he didn't come up behind him. They were together." Daryl explained,
Lori approached him, "Would you please get back out there, find Rick, Marcie, and Shane and find out what on earth is going on?"
He nodded, "You got it." He didn't trust Marcie being out there with Shane. And since they heard gunshots, he had a bad feeling in his gut.
"Thank you."
Vivian and Andrea followed Glenn and Daryl onto the porch, and they paused when they heard growls. They walked to the edge of the porch to see a huge heard of walkers heading towards the house,
"Oh my god." Vivian mumbled to herself.
She had only seen that many walkers when she was on runs in the city. Even the herd on the highway wasn't that large.
Glenn rushed inside to get Hershel and most of the group followed them out,
"Patricia, kill the lights." Hershel ordered,
"I'll get the guns." Andrea stated,
"Maybe they're just passing, like the herd on the highway." Glenn looked to Daryl, who had taken up a leadership role, "Should we just go inside?"
"Not unless there's a tunnel downstairs I don't know about." The redneck responded, trying to keep his cool despite knowing Marcie was out there, "A herd that size would rip the house down."
Lori met them out on the porch, "Carl's gone."
Everyone turned towards her, "What?"
Vivian could see the panic on her face, "He... he was upstairs. I can't find him anymore."
"Maybe he's hiding." Glenn suggested,
She shook her head, "He's supposed to be upstairs. I'm not leaving without my boy."
Vivian grabbed her arm in comfort, "We're not. We're gonna look again. We're gonna find him."
A few of them entered the house again and began searching for Carl, calling out his name. But Vivian knew it was no use. He wasn't dumb, he would've came out by now.
He wasn't in the house. He snuck out.
Vivian went back out onto the porch, "He's not here." She panted before glancing down at the gun bag, "Is that gonna be enough?"
Daryl shook his head, "I got the number... It's no use."
"You can go if you want." Hershel told them,
"You gonna take 'em all on?" The redneck asked,
Hershel cocked his shotgun, "We have guns. We have cars."
"Kill as many as we can, and we'll use the cars to lead the rest of them off the farm." Andrea planned out,
Daryl stared out into the field, silently praying that Marcie wasn't apart of the hoard, "Are you serious?"
"This is my farm." Hershel informed him, "I'll die here."
Daryl nodded, jumping over the porch railing, "It's as good a night as any."
He needed to find her.
Marcie grunted as Rick set her down after they entered the barn and shut the door behind them. She helped Carl keep the door closed as Rick grabbed a metal rod, putting it through the handles to keep the walkers out.
"What now?" Marcie panted, watching as the doors shook,
Rick looked around before finding a can of gasoline, "Go up onto the loft." He ordered before grabbing it and pouring the gas onto the hay,
Carl climbed up the ladder and Marcie stood at the bottom, watching as Rick grabbed a lighter and walked up to her, "Drop the lighter when I say. We'll stop some of them from reaching the house and distract the others, so at least we'll have a chance."
She nodded, "Alright."
With a painful grunt, she began to climb the ladder, reaching Carl who was waiting for her. Rick began yelling, smacking the barn doors, "Hey! Hey!"
Marcie made it to the top and Carl wrapped his arms around her, and she tried to ignore the pain in her side. Rick opened the doors and walkers began to pile in, "Holy shit." Marcie gasped,
Rick ran over to the ladder and began to climb, "Marcie, now!"
She quickly lit it and dropped the lighter, setting the barn up in flames.
"Woah." Carl whispered as the walkers began to burn, creating a disgusting smell.
Marcie walked over to the loft window and stared down at the ground, which was several feet away. She gripped her side, blood seeping through her make-shift tourniquet, "Rick, I won't make that."
"You need to." Rick stated, "We need to."
The three of them got out their guns and began firing at the walkers that spotted them. They spotted the RV making their way towards them and Rick waved to catch the driver's attention, "Hey! Here!" Rick pointed a the space in front of them, Put it right there! Come on!"
She spotted Jimmy in the driver's seat as he parked next to the burning barn. Rick jumped onto the roof before helping Carl. Marcie grunted as Rick caught her and helped her over to the edge,
They stood on the room of the RV and Rick went down first as they all continued to shoot the walkers away. Carl went down next and the two waited for Marcie, who began to feel lightheaded.
She was loosing too much blood.
Rick wrapped an arm around her waist and they rushed towards the woods.
Marcie knew what had to happen. It's not what she wanted, but it's what needs to happen. For them to survive.
She wasn't going to drag them down with her.
Marcie gripped onto Rick's shoulder as she limped along, her other hand pressing on her wound, "Rick... you gotta go."
They paused and turned to her, her hand leaving Rick's form, "That's not gonna happen, Marcie."
Carl grabbed her now free hand, "Yeah, we're not leaving you behind."
She shook her head, "I'm only slowing you down. You need to get back to Lori and the others and get them out of here."
"What about you?" Rick asked, "What about finding your parents?"
Tears filled her eyes, "What if they're already waiting for me?"
Just like how Lexi was waiting for her on the other side, what if her parents were waiting, too? What if they were already gone?
Marcie took out the flare gun, "I'll create a distraction, buy you guys some time."
Carl wrapped his arms around her, "Please, don't go."
She cupped his face, "It's your turn now, Carl. Bring your dad back to your mom and little sibling, okay? Take care of them." She untied her friendship bracelet that matched the one she took from Lexi months ago and tied it around Carl's wrist, "I'll always be with you." Marcie pulled away from him and went to hug Rick, "Thank you. And tell Daryl I'm sorry." She pushed Rick away, "Go! Go find your family, Rick!"
At least she would die saving her family.
Marcie limped further into the woods, shooting walkers with her gun. She stopped when her gun ran out of bullets, "Shit."
She grabbed the flare gun before raising it towards the sky, and pulled the trigger, "Come and get me assholes!"
A red light filled the air and Carl glanced back. She had gotten far in just a few minutes. He let out a small sob and Rick grabbed him, watching as walkers turned towards the light, "Come on."
