chapter 33

"LET'S HEAD BACK."
Marcie stared down at Tony's body, nodding vigourously. She didn't want to leave the farm ever again.
Rick grabbed Tony's shot gun and searched his pockets for some extra shells before turning to Marcie, "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Just... shocked."
He nodded, squeezing her shoulder before the group headed towards the door. Headlights filled the room, "Car. Car. Get down." Rick hissed,
The kneeled down by the door and windows, hoping their shadows didn't alert the people outside. It had to have been Dave and Tony's group,
The engines stopped and they heard car doors open and slam close, "Dave? Tony?" They heard a man call out, "They said over here?"
"Yeah. " Another man replied,
"I'm telling you, man, I heard shots."
"I saw roamers two streets over. Might be more around here."
There was at least three of them. They could take on three men, right?
Marcie held her breath as their shadows appeared in the windows. Rick, Glenn, and Marcie held their guns tightly. Maybe they could sneak away when the men turned their backs.
Vivian began to worry. The men and Marcie had been gone for hours, and so had Lori after she asked her to keep an eye on Carl.
Had she gone after Rick herself?
She was helping set up the dinner table, Liam playing with a toy car in the high chair they found on the highway. Carl was next to her, putting out silverware,
"They should've been back by now." Andrea commented as she walked into the dining room,
"Yeah." Shane agreed, sitting at the head of the table, "They just got holed up somewhere. We'll... we'll head out first thing in the morning." He looked up at Patricia, "Thank you."
Everyone began to pass around the platters of food, piling onto their plates. Vivian made sure to put vegetables and chicken onto Liam's plate before giving him a spoon.
"Carl, I want you to keep your head up, okay? Your old man, he's the toughest son of a-"
"No cussing in the house." Patricia interrupted him,
Shane looked up at the blonde and cleared his throat, "Sorry."
"Lori, dinner." Carol called out and headed towards the living room,
"She's not in there." Vivian responded, taking a bite of bread,
"Where is she?" Dale asked, all eyes on Vivian,
Vivian shrugged, "Dunno. She was worried about Rick, asked me to look in on Carl."
"She went after them?"
"She didn't say that... but... maybe?" Vivian began to feel bad. Of course, she should've stopped Lori if she would've known at the time,
Shane stood, "Nobody panic. Gotta be around here somewhere." The group began to scatter, wanting to look for Lori.
Vivian sighed, "Patricia, can you make sure Liam eats?" The blonde nodded, "Thank you." She replied before leaving the house to search for the mother,
Marcella let out a nervous breath as they were waiting to hear the sound of the car's engines start up, but it didn't seem like they would leave any time soon.
"Why won't they leave?" Glenn whispered, everyone's back still against the wall,
"Would you?" Hershel responded,
He was right. Marcie wouldn't leave her group behind either.
"We can't sit here any longer. Let's head out the back and make a run to the car." Rick ordered them,
They all stood to make a run for it when they heard gunshots. The four of them went back to their spot against the wall, in case they were spotted,
"What happened?" They heard one of the men outside ask,
"Roamers, I nailed 'em." One of them answered,
"They disappeared but their car's still there. I cleared those buildings. You guys get this one?"
Marcie's heartbeat was loud in her ears. If they cleared some of the buildings, when are they gonna clear this one?
"We're looking for Dave and Tony and no one checks the damn bar?" Their foot steps grew louder and she shut her eyes.
Rick aimed his gun upwards and the door opened. Glenn jumped to the side and slammed the door shut on the men,
"What?"
"Someone pushed it shut. There's someone in there." One of them responded, "Yo, is someone in there?" None of them replied, "Yo, if someone's in there, we don't want no trouble. We're just looking for our friends."
"What do we do?"
"Bum rush the door?"
"No, we don't know how many are there. Just relax." Their 'leader' replied, "We don't want any trouble. We're just looking for our friends." He told them, "If something happened, tell us. This place is crawling with corpses. If you can help us not get killed, I'd appreciate it."
"Dude, you're bugging. I'm telling you nobody's in there."
"Someone guard the door. If they're in there, they might know where Dave and Tony are." Footsteps began to fade and Marcie was worried they were going to go through the back.
"They drew on us!" Rick called out and Marcie swore internally,
"Dave and Tony in there? They alive?"
"No." Rick answered truthfully,
"They killed Dave and Tony."
"Come on, man, let's go."
No, I'm not leaving, I'm not telling Jane. I'm not gonna go back and tell them that Dave and Tony got shot by some assholes in a bar."
They weren't going to let them go peacefully, that much Marcie knew. They killed their group members, she wouldn't let that slide either.
"Your friends drew on us! They gave us no choice!" Rick told them and Marcie gripped her gun tighter, "I'm sure we've all lost enough people, done things we wish we didn't have to, but it's like that now. You know that! So let's just chalk this up to what it was..." Rick looked over at her, "Wrong place, wrong-"
Gun shots pierced the air, and the glass on the door and windows shattered. Marcie went to cover her face as glass scratched at her skin.
Rick stood and fired his gun through the hole the other men cause, "Get outta here! Go!" Rick ordered them,
Hershel and Glenn went running while Marcie stayed behind, shooting blindly through the window.
"Get out of here, Marcie!" Rick demanded as they ducked back down,
"I'm not leaving you behind!" She growled as more bullets fired into the bar,
Vivian checked all the tents and the RV, coming up with nothing. No sign of Lori anywhere.
The group met up at the RV, "She's not at the barn. I checked the yards." Shane announced,
"Well, where is she?" Carl asked and Vivian squeezed his shoulders to try and comfort him,
Carol walked over, "She asked Daryl to go into town. Must've gone herself."
Carl pressed a hand to his mouth, tears filling his eyes as he pressed himself against Vivian,
Shane turned to Dale and began to approach him, "Did you know about this?"
The older man shook his head, "No."
"Look, just... Did she take a gun?"
He shrugged, "I don't know." Shane turned and began to walk towards the car, "I wouldn't let her go out there alone."
Vivian shook her head, "If I would've known, I would've stopped her. I thought she was going to ask Daryl and come right back." She looked over at Carol, "Does he know Marcie is out there?"
"If he did, he didn't seem to care."
"Asshole."
Marcie watched as Rick reloaded his Python, maybe he needs a better gun that holds more bullets.
"Hey!" Rick yelled, "We all know this is not gonna end well! There's nothing in it for any of us! You guys just... Just back off, no one else gets hurt!"
Glenn stood from where he was hiding behind a table and walked towards the back room. Rick motioned for Marcie to follow him and she stayed hunched over as she rushed after Glenn, trying to stay out of sight.
The two stayed silent as they scanned the storage room. Marcie winced as Glenn stepped on the stairs and the creaked loudly. The two of them quickly went down them, trying to keep from making too much noise, before walking around the shelves. They needed to make sure no one was going to sneak up behind them.
A shadow appeared in the back door window and Marcie froze. Glenn aimed his gun towards the door and as the doorknob began to turn, he pulled the trigger.
Glass shattered and Marcie raised her gun in case the man was still there.
"Glenn! Marcie!" Rick called out,
"We're all right!" Glenn replied, turning his back away from the door.
"Sh!" Marcie hushed him before the two hid behind a wall on opposite sides of the door, keeping it guarded.
Minutes later, Hershel came through the door and approached them, "Rick wants you to try for the car."
Glenn raised his eyebrows, "Try?"
"You'll try and succeed."
Marcie and Glenn shared a look, silently asking each other who was going to do it. She held out a fist and the two competed in rock, paper, scissors. Glenn held out two fingers and Marcie had a fist, "Shit." Glenn hissed as rock beat scissors,
"I'll cover you." She smiled.
Glenn rolled his eyes, "That's a great plan."
The three approached the doors and Glenn opened them, checking for members of the other group. They checked the alley before Glenn stepped out and walked towards the street.
Marcie glanced to the left and spotted a man stepping out of the trees, gun raised, "Glenn!" She aimed her gun and pulled the trigger, not before the man was able to shoot his own gun.
A bullet lodged into his chest, and the man laid on the ground, groaning in pain.
She just shot a man. A living, breathing man.
As she stared at the stranger laying in the grass, Hershel glanced over to where Glenn was hiding behind a dumpster, his shoes poking out,
Footsteps approached them and Marcie turned, gun raised, as Rick ran towards them. She quickly lowered her gun, her heart still thumping loudly,
"What happened?" Rick asked, staring at her,
"He... he fired." She answered,
"He must've hit Glenn. He's behind the dumpster." Marcie's attention turned to the right, down the alley, "Doesn't look like he's moving."
Was she too late? Did she shoot the man and it wasn't even worth it in the end?
Rick squeezed past Marcie and stepped into the alley, his Python and Tony's shot gun in each hand as he moved towards Glenn, "You hit? Are you hit?" Rick went to sit by Glenn and she heard his voice,
"No."
She let out a sigh of relief. Glenn was okay.
After a moment, Rick and Glenn moved to go towards the car and more gunshots rang out. The duo hid behind the dumpster once again.
The sound of a car engine filled the air, " Let's get out of here! Roamers all over the place!" An unfamiliar voice called out,
"What about Sean?!"
"They shot him! We gotta go. Roamers are everywhere."
Sean. That was the name of the man she shot.
The sound of screaming interrupted Marcie's thoughts. One of the guys jumped from the roof of the pharmacy across the street, but he didn't quite make it.
The truck's tires squealed as they raced out of there, the man calling out for his group, "No no, don't leave! Help me! No! No!"
Rick and Glenn stood from their hiding spots and Glenn turned towards them as Rick split away, towards the street. Glenn turned towards them, "Cmon!"
Hershel stepped out and Marcie went to follow. She heard screams behind her and turned to see the man, Sean, crying out as multiple walkers bagged to tear him apart.
"I'm sorry." Marcie whispered.
"Marcie! Let's go!" Glenn hissed,
"The gunfire must've attracted the walkers." Hershel stated when she caught up with the two men, "Where's Rick?"
"He... he ran across." Glenn answered as they got to Hershel's truck.
"Well, hell, we can't go without him." Hershel began to jog across the street, "Rick!"
Vivian had finally gotten Liam to fall asleep in their tent when she saw headlights approaching the farmhouse. Everyone began to gather around, Carl holding onto Vivian's hand as they approached,
"Oh my god, are you all right?" Andrea questioned as she walked over to the Grimes woman, "What happened?"
In the moonlight, Vivian could spot the blood on Lori's head and lower lip. Her hair was disheveled, something clearly happened out there.
"I was in an accident." Lori explained and Shane reached for her arm, "I'm fine, I'm fine. Where's Rick?" Shane began to walk away slowly and Lori glanced around at everyone's confused faces, "They're not back?" She turned to Shane, "Where are they?"
"Look, I had to get you back here." Shane defended,
She began to stomp towards him, her eyes holding fury, "You asshole." She pushed at his chest, "He's my husband."
"Lori, I will go after him. I will find him." Shane pushed her off him, "Hey! Now, first thing's first... I gotta look after you. I gotta make sure the baby's alright."
Vivian paused mentally. Lori was pregnant?
Carl let go of her hand and stepped forward, "You're having a baby?" Everyone's eyes turned to the older child of the group, "Why didn't you tell me?"
Lori blinked, not having a clear answer.
Did Rick even know? Vivian remembered how Shane and Lori used to go at it like bunnies back at the quarry. Was it Rick's? Or Shane's? She had so many questions, yet she knew it was none of her business.
Vivian cleared her throat, "C'mon." She reached for Lori slowly, "Let's make sure you're alright."
Maggie went back to Beth, while Vivian grabbed a damp washcloth and brought it to Lori to clean the blood from her face,
Carl sat next to his mother, staring at the floor. Lori took a sip of the water Andrea brought her before turning to her son, "Hey, I am so sorry that I left without telling you."
"It's okay." Carl mumbled, "I wasn't scared. When's dad coming back?"
"Let's hope soon." She answered,
"I wanna be there when you tell him about the baby." Carl demanded softly,
Lori sighed and rubbed his back, "Oh, love, he already knows. We were just trying to find the right time to tell you."
So if Rick knows, does that mean it's his?
"Is it a boy or girl?" Carl questioned,
"Well, we won't know that until it's born." Lori answered,
He placed his hand on her stomach, and Vivian smiled, "Will I be able to feel it?"
The brunette stood and quietly made her way towards the door. It seemed like an intimate moment, and she didn't want to protrude.
Shane was on the porch, pacing. Vivian stepped out and cleared her throat, "If they're not back by sunrise, I'm gonna head out and go find them."
Shane scoffed, "Just you?"
She raised an eyebrow at his tone, "I was gonna ask Daryl to come, too. I know you're gonna come. You gotta make it up to her somehow. Unless, you don't want Rick to come back."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
She narrowed her eyes at him, "I think you know." She stated before going down the steps and heading towards her tent to check on Liam.
Once she made sure he was still sleeping peacefully, Vivian began walking across the field, where Carol told her Daryl had set up tent,
"Jesus, can' you people leave me alone?" He grumbled, cooking some squirrel over his fire,
"Lori's fine, we got her back... but Marcie's still out there with Rick and Glenn." She stated, crossing her arms over her chest,
"She can take care of herself." Daryl grunted,
"It's been hours. It was supposed to be a grab and go. Clearly, something happened. Shane and I are going tomorrow to look for them... you with us?" Vivian asked,
Daryl scoffed, "Like I told the other one, 'm done lookin' for people."
Vivian narrowed her eyes, "Did you not hear me? Marcie is out there!"
He stood, "Does it look like I give a shit?!"
"Marcie helped look for your bother, she helped look for Sophia, the least you could do is go out there and help get her back! I know you care about her, Daryl, doesn't matter how many times you deny it." Vivian turned to leave, "We're leaving at sun up."
