chapter 150

VIVIAN'S HEART RATE BEGAN TO SKYROCKET.

There were only so many routes to get to Hilltop. If the Saviours had the numbers, they could block them off completely.

How would they get Maggie to the doctor they so desperately needed?

Abraham started up the RV again and backed away from the scene before finding another road to turn down. Once they thought they were a good distance away, he pulled over and Eugene pulled out a map and began looking for a new route.

Vivian sat next to Maggie, holding her hand while she slept, stroking the back of it to bring her more comfort. For Maggie or herself, Vivian didn't know.

Carl and Aaron stayed in the back with them, waiting for Eugene to find a road to take,

"Why didn't you stay back and help guard the place?" Carl asked the older man as he gazed out the window,

"I owe her." Aaron answered confidently, "Why did you come?"

"I owe them."

"Logrun Road's a straight shot." Eugene announced,

"We want visibility." Sasha told him, knowing Logrun Road was through the woods, where they wouldn't be able to see any Saviours coming,

He pointed to the map, "There, you got it on Shelton. Golf course, country clubs, sloping terrain. No bum rush from the bogeyman. We'd see them from a good piece. It is a longer trip by a third, but we'd get the scenic safety of clear-cut dingles and glens."

Sasha narrowed her eyes at him, "You're being serious, right?"

"As coronary thrombosis."

Rick walked over, "You got a route?"

"Yeah."

Abraham came up behind them and Rick gave him a nod, "Let's go."

Sasha sat in the passenger seat to give him directions as the ex-military man drove. Vivian let go of Maggie's hand and moved to sit up front with the adults. She sat next to Rick on the couch and he placed an arm behind her, inviting her closer,

"How's she doin'?"

"She's sleeping." Vivian sighed, leaning into him more, "Do you think we could do it?"

He glanced down at her, "Do what?"

"What they did, Glenn and Maggie? I know we talked about it this morning but-"

"Aw, bitch nuts."

They all turned their attention towards the windshield once more to see more Saviours that were waiting for them to come along,

There were more this time around, with a lot more weapons than they saw with the other group,

"We making our stand?" Sasha asked him,

"Yeah, we end it." Carl stated,

Rick shook his head slightly, "No, not now. They've been waiting. They're ready. With one of us behind the wheel, that's six on sixteen. We're gonna play it our way, how we want it." He glanced back at his son, who was still glaring out the windshield, "Right?"

"Right."

"All right, go slow." He ordered Abraham, who began to back up.

On the road, a Saviour walked forward, aiming his rifle towards the sky and fired a couple rounds.

Vivian had a feeling they might not make it to Hilltop.

Not in one piece.

Rick kneeled between Sasha and Abraham's seats, "How are we on gas?"

"Half a tank. I pulled some more cans before we left."

"Those weren't the same men who blocked the road the first time." Sasha spoke up,

"Same outfit, different soldiers. They got numbers." Abraham added,

"Yeah, we keep driving, we get her there." Rick stated,

"We will." Sasha assured him,

"If we have to shove each and every one of them up their own asses." Abraham said before he hit the brakes,

Vivian turned to look out the window to see a lineup of walkers, all attached by chains to block the road,

"Dammit." She hissed,

"We can't go through it. Can't risk the RV." Rick patted Abraham's shoulder, "You stay behind the wheel, just in case. We'll clear it."

Vivian reached for her gun and quickly followed behind Rick, her eyes scanning the trees around them. The others followed suit, keeping their guns raised,

"Putting together a red rover like that takes people." Eugene stated, "A lot of them."

Her eyes spotted something in the middle of the road slightly the line of walkers. She squinted, trying to see it better, stepping closer to the rotters,

"Come on, let's do this." Rick put his rifle on his back and reached for his knife,

"Dad." Carl stopped them,

Aaron nodded towards one walker, who had a dread stabbed into the side of its' head, "That's Michonne's."

Another one had three bolts impaled into its' chest, "That's Daryl's."

Vivian got close enough to see the small green object to realise what it was. An army man toy. Why would that be there?

Unless it was to send a message.

"Emmett." She whispered, her mind replaying the time she bought the figurines for him one year for Christmas. He used to shove them up their dad's nose when he was passed out on the couch.

She kneeled down and reached for it as bullets were fired from above. Rick grabbed her arm and pulled her back, "Get back to the RV! Go!"

Abraham stepped out and began shooting towards the Saviours who were hiding,

Rick used his hatchet to whack the walker's wrist off, clearing a way for them to get past. Sasha dealt with one half of the walkers while Rick took out the others. Vivian darted forward, reaching for the little figurine and stuffing it in her pocket before making her way to Carl, protecting him while he got onto the RV, trying to take out the men that were shooting at them.

Rick ran over and ushered them all back into the RV and Eugene quickly drove through the cleared road.

They were only a mile down the road when the RV steed making some squealing sound, and Abraham took over the wheel once more so Eugene could find them another route,

"What is that?" Sasha asked,

"Undercarriage could've caught a bullet. Or could be transmission. It could be nothing." The science teacher answered,

"They were firing at our feet." Rick stated, "They blocked the road, but they weren't trying to stop us. They want us in this direction."

Sasha, who was sitting next Eugene and also looking at the map, spoke up, "Barton Road takes us north, but they gotta know we wanna go north."

"Meadows. Could take us east a piece, but we can get back on track on Mayhew." Eugene added,

"We're down to a third of a tank. We could top off at the next stop, but no refills after that." Sasha finished,

Vivian moved back into the bedroom to see Aaron sitting next to an awake Maggie, "What's goin' on?" The Greene woman mumbled,

She shared a look with Aaron, wondering if she should tell the already stressed woman the truth, before answering, "Nothing, we just have to take a little detour, that's all."

"I heard gunshots." Maggie insisted,

"Hence the detour." Vivian smiled nervously,

"What's going on out there, Vivian?"

She reached for Maggie's hand, trying to comfort her before breaking the news, "The Saviours... they're blocking the roads to Hilltop. They're waiting for us, no matter where we go."

Maggie tried to sit up, "You all shouldn't have come."

"Don't." Vivian adjusted the pillows to make sure she was comfortable, "Maggie, we all volunteered. We're gonna get you to Hilltop and you and your baby are gonna be okay." She place her hand gently on her forehead, brushing her now short hair back, "I'm gonna go talk to Rick, I'll be back."

Vivian stood, leaving Maggie with Aaron, and popped her head up front, "Rick... she's burning up."

He nodded but before he could speak up, Abraham called out his name.

There was even more Saviors in the road, blocking them from going any further,

"Go back." Rick ordered Abraham as they came to a stop,

"Where?"

There was no answer. Because there was no where else to go.
