chapter 148

THE CALM WAS OVER.

Now, the storm is in full force.

Marcie sat in the back of the van, picking at the fraying hole that was left behind by the bullet she was shot with recently. Her leg wasn't at one hundred percent yet, but she wasn't going to let that stop her from getting Daryl back.

When they got to the railroad tracks, Marcie immediately went to the spot where Denise's body went down. Rosita and Glenn followed behind her while Michonne took out the walkers that were gnawing on the corpse's of the Saviours.

"That's where she died." Rosita explained to the Korean,

"All right, so he had to start from here." Glenn reasoned,

Michonne moved over to the foliage on the side of the tracks, where she lifted some branches to reveal Daryl's bike, "He did."

Glenn turned to Marcie and Rosita, "Which way did Dwight run?" Marcie turned to look at her friend, who continued to stare at the blood stain,

"Rosita?"

"We should let him do this." She stated,

Marcie shook her head, "Daryl... he's been like this before. Revenge makes him blind and he doesn't know what he's doing until it's too late. Maybe him trying this makes you feel better about it right now. Maybe they keep knowing more about us than we know about them. Or maybe Daryl's gonna get himself killed. I'm not gonna let that happen." She turned to Glenn, "They went that way." She pointed towards the woods where she remembered firing her gun at Dwight,

Marcie was able to pick up the trail, and she limped along, bringing the others with her. They made it to a field, and she spotted the archer in the middle.

They stayed on the outskirts, going around the tall grass just in case. They didn't know where the Saviours ended up, or if they were still out there.

The group made it to the far side of the field and waited for Daryl to finish crossing. Just before they were going to step out to reveal themselves, Daryl fired an arrow.

It stuck into the trunk of a tree next to Rosita's head,

"Watch the hell out, asshole." She hissed at him, ripping the bolt out of the bark and approaching him,

"I did. You shouldn't have come." He growled out, taking the bolt from her hand and stomping away,

"You shouldn't have left." Michonne told him,

Daryl stopped and turned to the group,

"When I split off from Sasha and Abraham, he was out there in the woods, in that burned-out forest with them girls, put a gun to my head, tied me up. I even tried to help him."

"So, you think it's your fault?" Glenn called out after him,

"Yeah, I know it is." Daryl stated, "I'm gonna go do what I should've done before."

"What, for her?" Glenn followed the archer, "She's gone, man. You're doing this for you."

"Man, I don't give a shit." He spat at him before continued on his way,

Marcie's heart cracked, she wanted revenge too, but not like this. But she knew it would be hard to stop him.

She limped forward, getting in front of him, "Dare, please." She didn't want to beg, but she had a feeling she was gonna have to,

Glenn stepped up next to her,  "Daryl... we need to get back there and figure this out from home. Our home. We need you, and everyone back there needs us right now. It's.. it's gonna go wrong out here."

"He's right." Marcie stated, "Let's go home and we'll make a plan. We'll get justice." She stepped forward and grabbed his free hand, their matching tattoos pressing together, "I promise. We'll come back."

Daryl stared down at her and for a moment, Marcie thought she got through to him. But when he shook his head and pulled his hand away, she knew she didn't have him,

"I can't."

Tears filled her eyes, anxiety rushing through her veins, "Daryl..."

Michonne reached for her and Glenn called out his name,

"Man, I can't!" He exclaimed, not even bothering to look back at them.

Daryl knew if he did, if he looked back at Marcie's heartbroken face, he would go back with them. But he couldn't, he needed revenge for Denise.

Because if he couldn't save her, this was the least he could do.

Rosita walked past them, "I can't either."

Marcie watched them walk away while Glenn went in the opposite direction. She didn't know what to do. Support her man and help him get revenge, or go back to her family and protect them.

Michonne squeezed her shoulder, "We need to go."

She hesitated, and turned to look at Glenn, "If it was Maggie, what would you do?"

Glenn shook his head at her, "Thing is, those men could be back in Alexandria right now."

"And if they are, they're dead." Michonne added.

Marcie's eyes caught something amongst the trees. There it was, another carving just like the one she had seen months ago outside Alexandria.

'ED'.

This one looked fresher than the other one. Who was this person, and why were they leaving marks in the trees? Leaving a trail for someone to follow?

"We just got stuck with each other." Glenn spoke up, "We were lucky. We figured it all out together. It felt like we did. After everything, we did. The world's not what we thought it was. Hilltop, the Saviors, it's bigger."

Suddenly, whistles echoed through the trees. Marcie and Glenn raised their guns, aiming at the men who were stepping out from behind trees.

Marcie glanced over at Michonne, who was gripping the handle of her sword. The two women shared a look, Marcie a worried one while Michonne tried to comfort her.

Daryl and Rosita would rescue them... right?

A familiar face stepped out from behind a tree, it was the man that Marcie shot, Dwight, "Hi, Marcie, was it?"

She had missed last time, but she wasn't gonna make that mistake again.

If she fired her gun, maybe Daryl and Rosita would hear the gunshot and come running. But maybe Dwight would kill her and her friends while they were at it.

"Drop the guns now and we won't kill you." Dwight ordered them.

Marcie seriously considered it. There was no way all of them were gonna make it out of this situation alive. And if it meant her friends would live, she would sacrifice herself in a heartbeat.

But she didn't know which way this was gonna go. And Glenn had a wife and a baby to get home to.

Glenn dropped his gun first and that finalised Marcie's decision. Michonne was next and Marcie dropped her weapon last. The men came forward with restraints, tying their hands behind their backs and putting gags around their mouths.

"Your boyfriend out here?" Dwight asked as he tightened Marcie's ropes, "Maybe I should finish our little war. Kill him and his bitch."

Before she could argue, he tied the rag around her mouth, silencing her. She struggled and Dwight grabbed her hair tightly,

"This can go either painful and slow, or quick and easy. Your choice, Marcie." He taunted in her ear, "You shouldn't have come back here."

Tears filled her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. The three of them were sat next to each other, with a couple of guards around them while Dwight and a few others went to search for Daryl.

The Saviours built a fire and Marcie made eye contact with Glenn, trying to silently tell him that they'll get out of this.

All of them.

They were gonna get back to Alexandria, back to Maggie, and they were gonna figure out how to finish this once and for all.

A dark figure in the distance caught her eye, and Marcie spotted Daryl and Rosita over a hundred yards away, hidden in the brush.

Marcie made sure the Saviours weren't looking before shaking her head slightly, trying to warn them to stay away.

But of course Daryl didn't listen.

He put a finger to his lips, signalling her to be quiet.

She spotted Dwight coming up behind him with a gun and Marcie let out a shout, getting Michonne's and Glenn's attention.

"Hi, Daryl."

Dwight pulled the trigger and Marcie screamed behind the gag, watching Daryl fall to the ground.
