chapter 142

MARCIE STOOD NEXT TO MAGGIE AND CAROL, ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE OUTPOST.

It began to sprinkle, and Marcie thought it was fitting. The sky was crying, mourning the lives being lost in that building.

Mourning the lost of humanity.

They stayed with then RV, keeping an eye out in case anything went wrong. They could still see the outpost, the giant satellite on top, but was still out of the way to stay safe.

"You didn't have to stay out here with me." Maggie commented, breaking the silence,

"Not that you're not capable of taking care of yourself." Marcie replied, "I'm doing this for Glenn and Daryl and Rick and for everyone who cares about you and this baby." She leaned back against the RV, "Anything can happen out here, you know that." She stared at her friend for a long moment, "Why are you out here? Surely, Glenn didn't want you a part of this."

Maggie glanced over at her before returning her gaze to the outpost, "I'm the one that got Gregory to agree to this deal. I couldn't just stay back and let them do the dirty work."

Marcie understood. To Hilltop, she was Alexandria's speaker. Their representative. But she also knew what was going on with Maggie's personal life.

"They would understand, Maggie."

"Still. It would look bad."

Before Marcie could respond, an alarm went off at the outpost. Without hesitation, Marcie darted towards the building, "They're in trouble. Stay here." Carol told the younger woman,

Maggie followed behind, "I'm going with you."

They got to the fence and Marcie reached for her friend's arm, "Maggie, I said stay here."

"No."

"Damn it, Maggie." Carol snapped,

"I have to." The brunette urged,

"No, you don't. You don't have to." Marcie tried to convince her,

"Yes, I do."

Carol sighed, "What the hell are you doing here?"

"What am I supposed to do?" Maggie asked,

"You're supposed to be someone else." Both of the younger women stared at Carol, wondering what she meant by that statement.

But they didn't have time to think.

"They need our help." Marcie stated before the sound of a walker filled their ears.

She turned in time to see it stumbling towards them, and she used her knife to take it out. They heard gunshots coming from inside the building and Marcie sighed, "You should stay here Maggie, for all of our sakes."

Carol spotted something in the tree line behind them and raised her gun. Marcie turned in time to see a man with a gun and Carol shot him.

Both Marcie and Carol began walking towards the outpost, but noticed Maggie wasn't following, "Damn it, Maggie, let's go!" They turned to see the woman standing over the man, her gun in her hand,

"Not until it's done."

Marcie opened her mouth, but paused when she felt something cold and metallic against her head, "Stop! Or she's dead."

Another woman popped out of the woods, aiming her weapon at Maggie, while an older woman went to Carol, "Guns, knives on the ground right now."

With a sigh, Marcie tossed her gun on the ground, "Knives, too." The woman pressed the gun closer against her head. With a glare, Marcie grabbed her knife from her belt loop and tossed it next to the gun,

"Nice jacket." An older woman told Maggie,

"For a murderous bitch." The other woman growled,

"Well, we'll take it off her before we shoot her." The woman aiming her gun at Marcie commented,

When Carol tossed her bag onto the forest floor, they moved forward to handcuff each other them. They dragged them through the trees, and waited at the tree line. Just watching... waiting.

It began to get lighter out, and the rain didn't let up. Marcie kept herself between the brunette woman, who was aiming a gun at them, and Maggie, in case she decided to fire at them.

The older woman attended to the man, patching up his gun shot wound while the redhead held a pair of binoculars, watching the scene unfold in front of them.

"Hell was that?" The older woman asked at the sound of a motorcycle engine.

Marcie's heart skyrocketed, it sounded like Daryl's. But it was lost a couple weeks ago, when Daryl was ambushed.

"It's Primo." The redhead answered, "Damn it, they've got him. Give me the walkie."

"Lower your gun, prick." She stated into the radio, "You, with the Colt Python. All of you, lower your weapons right now."

Damn, she really liked demanding people to drop their guns.

"Come on out. Let's talk." Marcie felt a sense of relief hearing Rick's voice, even if it is through a radio,

"How many we got?" The older woman asked,

"Nine in sight. Too many." The redhead answered,

"No, we can take 'em. We took more." The man responded,

The redhead gave him a look before speaking into the walkie again, "We're not coming out, but we will talk." She turned to them, "Names." They didn't respond at first, "Names!"

'I'm Maggie, she's Carol and she's Marcie.'

"We've got a Carol, a Marcie, and a Maggie." The woman spoke into the radio, "I'm thinking that's something you want to chat about. Now, we're gonna work this out right now, and it's going to go our way."

Marcie could see in the distance as they picked a man out of the grass and held a gun to his head, "You can see we have one of yours. We'll trade."

"I'm listening." The redhead responded,

"First I want to talk to them, make sure they're all right." Rick demanded,

The woman approached them, "I'm gonna put you on. You say you're fine. I'll know if you try anything else."

She put the radio to Carol's mouth, "Rick, it's Carol. I'm-- I'm fine, but-" She quickly moved onto Maggie, "Now you."

The brunette glared at her, "Rick, it's Maggie. We're both okay. We'll figure thi-"

The redhead went up to Marcie, holding the radio up to her mouth, "Go on." Marcie kept her mouth shut and the woman grabbed her hair before pulling on it tightly, "I said, speak."

"Screw you." Marcie hissed.

Daryl heard her voice through the radio and it didn't help the tension going through his body.

He was going to kill them, no hesitation.

"You have your proof. Let's talk." The redhead stated,

"This is the deal right here. Let 'em go, you can have your guy back and live." Rick replied,

"Three for one, that's not much of a trade."

"You don't have another choice or you would've done something about it already." Marcie knew he was right. They all knew.

"We have to get him back." The man groaned, gripping his injury,

"Primo can take care of himself." The redhead told him,

"He can patch me up. I need him, thanks to that bitch." He glanced over at Carol, "You lost your balls, Paula. You should've shot her in the head so they could hear her die."

Marcie gulped nervously at the thought he was placing in the woman's head. There was a chance she could still do that, shoot Carol in front of everyone.

Like the Governor did to Hershel.

"If you could just shut up, I'll solve this." Paula snapped without looking back at him,

"Then make the deal or we go in."

"She said shut up, so shut it. You should be glad she doesn't have a sack of gonads to trip over." The older woman but in,

Paula raised the binoculars to her eyes as Rick spoke over the walkie again, "Look, I know you're talking it over. It's a fair trade. Just come out, we do this, we all walk away."

Marcie knew it wasn't going to happen. No way Rick or Daryl would let them walk away without a bullet to their chest.

"Smug prick." The woman holding the gun to their heads commented, "He must think we're stupid."

"That's a good thing." Paula replied,

"Do we have a deal?" Rick asked,

Paula and the brunette gave each other a nod before the redhead answered, "I'll get back to you."

The last thing Marcie saw was a walker approaching before her jacket was flipped over her head. They were led through the woods, ordered when to turn or when to stop. It took everything in Marcie's willpower to not pull away and fight.

Eventually they made it to a car, where their hands were duct taped and gags were placed around their heads, keeping them quiet. Marcie listened carefully, Paula speaking in code on the radio to the other Saviors.

It felt like forever before they were brought into a building, the sound of walkers filling their ears.

"I hate this damn place. Safe house." The older woman grumbled, "There ain't nothing safe about it."

"This place is gonna save our asses." Paula stated,

They removed their jackets and Marcie internally panicked when she spotted a walker heading towards Maggie. She tried to jump forward, but the brunette woman held her back.

Paula stabbed the walker before speaking, "Get on the ground."

They separated the three of them, still in the same room, but sitting in opposite corners. Paula taped their ankles together while the other woman removed anything from the grungy room that they could use to escape, even the rotting corpse.

"If you're wondering if there's a way out of this. There isn't. Not unless I say so." Paula stated,

Gunshots sounded from the other room and Paula stood, waving the gun around, "I want to kill all three of you right now. It's taking all I have not to, so go ahead, I dare you, try something. Just see what happens." She told them before leaving.

Once the door shut, Marcie looked around for something sharp enough to cut through the tape. She scooted over to a rusty pipe, a piece of it sticking out and she knew she found the bullseye.

But Marcie paused when she heard heavy breathing coming from Carol. She turned to see the woman hyperventilating, which wasn't like her. She was always so calm and level headed.

Marcie and Maggie shared a confused look before Marcie moved back to her original spot.

The door opened and the Saviors filed in, "When's the last time anyone checked this place?"

"It was fine a month ago."

"Sweetie, that was a month ago. Shit hards quick. The guns have gone bye-bye, the food's gone bye-bye, and we got growlers up and down the halls." The older woman complained,

"Means people can get through, too. Maybe we should get gone." The man groaned,

Carol was still breathing heavily and Maggie began to call out the woman's name, muffled by the gag, while the Saviors kept talking about their next plan.

"Yeah? Where the hell to?"

"Nowhere." Paula answered as she checked the man's wound, "Got dead in the halls? Free security. Those assholes get here before our people, the cold bloods will buy us some time." She glanced at Carol, "Shut up."

"Jesus, it's bleeding. It's not supposed to keep bleeding."

The group kept bickering back and forth while Carol sat there. Maggie continued to try to get their attention to the point where Paula approached her angrily, "What?" She pulled the gag down,

"She's hyperventilating. Somebody needs to take her gag off." Maggie pointed at the older woman,

"She's a nervous little bird, ain't she?"

That's when it clicked for Marcie. She had seen this act from Carol before. She plays the weak woman act. Get people to lower their guard before she guts them.

Marcie just had to put her faith in her group.

The brunette walked over, pointing the gun to Carol's head, "Look at you. Bitch, how did you make it this far?"

The older woman stood over Carol, "Honey, you need to take some yoga breaths and calm your ass down.

"I can't-"

She noticed Carol's hands, which were reaching for her side pocket in her pants. She reached in and grabbed a rosary.

Carol began to calm down, bringing the beads up to her gaped mouth.

"Oh." The older woman commented, "You're one of those."

Paula switched spots with the older woman, "What are you so afraid of? Are you actually afraid to die? All this and you're scared of getting your ticket punched."

"It doesn't matter what happens to me." Carol whispered, "Just don't hurt Maggie. Don't hurt the baby."

Marcie's eyes widened at Carol's confession. Did she think these people would have mercy on them just because Maggie was pregnant?

They turned to Maggie, now the gun on her. Marcie tensed up and it didn't go unnoticed by Paula and her sidekicks.

"Yeah, right."

"She got a bun in the oven, she doesn't look it." The man, Donnie, commented,

"I'm only two months, I think." Maggie explained,

"You're some kind of stupid, getting knocked up at a time like this." Paula stated and Marcie glared at her, tugging at her restraints. Maggie let out a small huff and Paula narrowed her eyes at her, "You think that's funny?"

"When was it ever smart to get knocked up?" Maggie retorted, "Women used to just die in childbirth. And they always thought the world was gonna end. Living through it, why would you just give up?"

"But are you gonna live through it?" The redhead asked before smiling, "Anyway, that's cute. Babies are the point. Children are our future. Making bite-size snacks for the dead. The point is to stay standing."

"No." Maggie shook her head, "Walkers do that. I'm choosing something."

"That's right. You are. You did." Paula stated before leaving the room.

The brunette kept her gun aimed at Maggie while Donnie groaned in pain. The other woman went into the corner, pulling out a cigarette and a lighter,

"Really?" Marcie mumbled under the gag. The older woman rolled her eyes and tugged on the cloth, "She's pregnant and you're smoking?"

"What? Honey, in case you haven't noticed, you've got bigger problems than a little secondhand smoke." She coughed,

"Molls." The brunette stated coldly,

She scoffed before dropping the cigarette and putting it out with her boot, "Y'all are worse than a bunch of evangelical second graders." She continued to cough into a cloth,

"Those things'll kill you." Carol commented,

"They already have." Molly showed them the blood soaked fabric, "I'm a dead woman walking. Which puts us in exactly the same boat." She let out a chuckle before coughing some more.

That's it. Marcie is getting Daryl to quit smoking the moment they get back to Alexandria.

Paula opened the door again and Donnie let out a cry, "My arm feels like it's on fire." He complained, tugging on the rope they used as a tourniquet.

"You pull that off, you gonna be nothing but a spigot." Molly told him,

Paula began to adjust the rope, "Okay, hold on. Scout crew is coming. They're 30 minutes out, maybe less."

"He doesn't have 30 minutes." Maggie stated, "His nerves are dying. If he doesn't get medical help, he's gonna lose his arm, maybe his life. I'm not a doctor, but my dad lost his leg, and I know that much. Your man, Primo, you think he can help you? It's time to end this. Talk to Rick."

"30 minutes." Paula reminded Donnie,

He glared at Carol, "You know my problem?" He stood and approached her, "She did this to me. She did it and she's just sitting there right as rain, fully intact." He reached for his gun with his good hand, "No, you're not gonna make the trade. And we just do 'em all now."

"No, we wait for the others." Paula stated, "We have to be smart. We need insurance."

"Then shoot her in the arm, too."

"No."

"You really gonna stick up for some gutless bitch over me?" Donnie asked before curling over in pain, "God damn it!"

"Shut up." Paula demanded, not wanting to draw the walkers to the room,

Marcie watched closely. They weren't strong as a group, they were crumbling. And she knew that Carol had caught on too, way before she did, and she's exploiting it.

"Don't push me, Paula." He groaned,

"Shut up!"

Marcie held in a gasp as Donnie backhanded Paula before turning to Carol. Marcie scooted forward, "Leave her alone!" She swung her legs, knocking Donnie to the floor.

Donnie grabbed Marcie and lifted her by the hair. Maggie and Carol cried out her name as Donnie breathed on her face, "You dumb, uppity bitch!"

Marcie smiled before head butting him. He backed away enough for Carol to grab onto his leg. He kicked her off and before Marcie could do anything, Paula recovered and used the butt of her gun to knock him out.

"You all are really some kind of stupid." Paula stated, turning to Marcie and rubbing her injured cheekbone, "Take her out. See if she knows anything. Should've done that before."

The brunette came over and grabbed Marcie's arm, "Move."
