chapter 136

DARYL WENT TO TUNE UP THE RV WHILE VIVIAN WENT HOME TO GRAB HER BAG,

Finn was staying behind to watch over the community while Rick and the others were gone. It made Vivian nervous considering the last time they separated like this, but Rick reassured her everything would be fine.

She hated when people said that. Nothing ever ended up being fine.

Vivian gave a kiss to Liam and Debbie before heading out. They stayed at the Grimes' house, standing on the porch and watching as the RV left with a large portion of their group in it.

Rick drove, and Vivian sat in the passenger seat with the map that Jesus wrote on, giving them clear directions to his community.

Jesus sat behind them, making sure they were going in the right way.

Vivian could hear conversing going on behind her, but didn't pay attention to anything other than the hand on her lap and the trees going by out the window.

She slyly took Rick's hand, keeping it in her lap despite the stares she felt on the back of her neck.

Marcie sat in the back, playing I Spy with Michonne. Daryl rolled his eyes at their childishness while Maggie and Glenn were grinning.

"I spy..." Marcie stared out the window before her eyes went wide,  "... that."

Bloody skid marks on the road led to a tipped over car, with guts and biters hanging out of the grill.

"Looks like it just happened." Rick commented as he pulled off to the side,

"It's one of ours." Jesus stated before rushing out of the RV before it fully came to a stop.

Vivian and Rick shared a glance before the woman grabbed her gun and followed the stranger out of the vehicle, in case Jesus tricked them and they were being ambushed.

Rick put the RV in park and everyone filed out with their weapons ready. Jesus was checking the car and their leader raised his gun at him, "If this is a trick, it won't end well for you."

"My people are in trouble." Jesus insisted, not phased by the gun in his face, "They don't..." He paused and sighed, "we don't have a lot of fighters. I know how it looks, but I'll play it out. Can I borrow a gun?"

"No." Daryl answered for Rick before pointing down at the dirt, "We got tracks right here."

The group followed the tracks to a nearby building, with the front door locked. Rick banged on the window loudly, still holding his gun up.

"They gotta be in there." Jesus stated,

Rick turned to him and Abraham spoke, "We movin' in or what?"

"How do we know this ain't firecrackers in a trash can?" Daryl questioned, stepping forward,

"You don't." Jesus answered,

"We'll get your people." Rick told him, "You're staying here with one of us."

The bearded man glanced back, looking for help against Rick, where Michonne shook her head at him, " That's the deal."

Glenn turned to his wife, "Will you stay?"

"Yeah." She nodded, "Y'all go. Just be careful."

"I'll stay, too." Marcie volunteered, stepping up next to her friend, and the two Rhee's gave her an appreciative nod.

Rick handcuffed Jesus' wrists behind his back, "We're gonna be careful."

"Just hurry." Jesus begged them.

Their leader turned to look at Marcie, "You hear me whistle, shoot him."

Marcie hesitated. She's killed people who deserved it, in the moment with her adrenaline high. But shooting Jesus point blank, who's have plenty of opportunities to hurt them but never did, felt wrong.

"I will." Maggie stated.

Daryl opened the door and the others entered the building, their weapons ready. Glenn stared at Maggie through the glass and Vivian patted his shoulder, "She'll be fine. Marcie will keep them safe."

Glenn gave her a nod before following the others.

They could hear the walkers the moment they entered. While it was dark, they could see the silhouettes of the undead approaching them, and Michonne and Rick quickly took them out.

The group separated into pairs, Rick and Michonne going one way while Glenn, Vivian, and Daryl went another, with Abraham wanting to go off on his own.

The trio stuck close together, watching each others backs. They didn't have to speak to communicate with each other. Walkers popped out of a room and the trio worked together to swiftly take them down.

Vivian heard clattering coming from another room and she shared a nod with the two boys. Daryl jumped in first, his knife raised, while the other two went in right after.

They spotted a man hiding behind a file cabinet, "Come on out." Vivian stated, "We're with Jesus."

At the sound of his name, the man stepped out with his hands up in surrender,

"I can't go with you. I'm looking for my friend." The man stated, "He's close, and he's hurt from the crash."

"Well, what are we waiting for?" Vivian sighed, "Let's go find him."

They filed back into the hallway, Daryl and Glenn leading while Vivian stayed behind the stranger in case he decided to attack.

They heard yelling coming from a short distance away, and Daryl shined his flashlight onto Abraham, who pinned another man against the wall. Vivian assumed he was apart of the group,

"C'mon, man, let's go!" Daryl urged him,

They all met up in the hallway, with Daryl and Glenn leading. Abraham helped the injured man while Rick and Michonne stayed in the back with the others from Jesus' group.

Both groups made it outside, and Rick uncuffed Jesus, who hugged his group. They brought them onto the RV and set the injured man onto the couch.

They were lucky, one of the men, Harlan, was a doctor. He wrapped up the injured man's wound before filing to the back of the RV, where Glenn and Maggie joined them.

Jesus turned to his friend, who still looked pale, "You okay, Freddie?"

Marcie turned, listening in on the conversation, "For a second back there, just when I thought he was gonna..." He glanced at Abraham, "I saw my wife. She died before all this." Freddie's voice broke as tears streamed down his cheeks, "Just when I thought it was over, there she was." he smiled, "Clear as day."

Marcie turned to stare out the window, trying to distract herself. She wondered if she would see her parents when her moment came.

Daryl reached for her arm, his fingers brushing over her skin to get her attention, "You okay?" He mumbled quietly,

She gave him a nod, "Yep. All good." She tried her best to give him a comforting smile.

The RV jerked and they came to a pause. All eyes turned to Rick as he stepped on the gas, but they could hear the tired spinning in the mud.

"Damn it." Rick sighed,

The motor continued to rev and Vivian raised her eye brows, "Don't think that's gonna help."

"A storm must've passed through." He grunted, glancing back at the others, "We're stuck."

Jesus stood, glancing out the window, "No worries." He patted Rick on the shoulder, "We're here."

"Yeah, but how are we gonna get home?" Vivian muttered as she stood and followed the man.

He was the first to step out into the mud, and when Vivian stepped out, she stared down at the tire that was deep in the mud and sighed,

"That's us." She turned as followed his gaze at the giant wall made of trees, that trailed over the hill for as far as she could see.

"That's the Hilltop."
