chapter 13

RICK SET THE BAG OF GUNS ON THE DESK, GOING THROUGH THEM WHILE THEY CAME UP WITH A PLAN,

"Them guns are worth more than gold. Gold won't protect yer family or put food on the table. You're gonna give that up for tha' kid?" Daryl asked,

Marcie glared at the back of his head. Glenn has done nothing but protect and provide for the group. If it weren't for him, she and Rick would be dead right now. Glenn was worth more than guns. They could always get more, but Glenn couldn't be replaced.

Vivian scoffed and pushed off from the wall she was leaning against, "Glenn has been risking his life for weeks, making runs into the city to get supplies for our group. Now when he needs us, you wanna just leave him?"

"I never asked him to do any of tha' shit." Daryl glared at her,

"Yes, Daryl, we know you're just fine living off your dumb squirrels." Vivian rolled her eyes,

Daryl went to approach her but Marcie was quick to step between them, "Back off." She told Vivian before turning to look at the younger Dixon brother, "Both of you." He scoffed at her before backing away,

"If I knew we'd get Glenn back, I might agree. But you think that Vato across the way is just gonna hand him over?" T-Dog asked,

"You calling G a liar?" Miguel accused,

"Are you a part of this?" Daryl slapped him upside the head, "You want to hold onto your teeth?"

"Question is, do you trust that man's word?" T-Dog continued,

Vivian nodded, "He has a point."

If they gave the Vatos Miguel and the guns, what's stopping them from killing them right where they stood? Not that she wanted to leave Glenn behind, but they needed to come up with a plan to get him back without shedding any blood,

"Nah, question is what are you willing to bet on it? Could be more than them guns. Could be yer life. Glenn worth that to ya?" Daryl questioned, meeting Rick's eye,

He put his Python into his holster, "What life I have I owe to him. I was nobody to Glenn, just some idiot stuck in a tank. He could have walked away, but he didn't. Neither will I." Rick explained,

"We." Marcie corrected and they all looked over at her, "We were both some idiots stuck in a tank. And he saved us. So now, we save him."

"So you're gonna hand the guns over?"

Rick shook his head, "I didn't say that." He glanced around at all of them, "There's nothing keeping you three here. You should get out, head back to camp."

Vivian raised her eyebrows, "And tell your family what?"

Rick made eye contact with them all, none of them backing down. They weren't going to leave anyone behind.

Daryl reached for a shot gun and the others did the same. Marcella took out her hand gun and Rick checked it for her,

"I'll have to show you how to properly shoot once we get back." Rick commented,

"I'm sure if I point randomly I'm bound to hit someone." Marcie grinned up at him, "Maybe I shouldn't be in the middle in case I hit any of you."

At least she didn't have to aim for the head like she does for the walkers.

"Come on, this is nuts." Miguel stood up and Daryl forced him back down, "Just do like G says."

"Shut up." Vivian rolled her eyes,

With the guns locked and loaded in their hands, the five of them approached the hideout once more. Daryl tied a rag around Miguel's mouth when the boy wouldn't shut up and pressed the barrel of his gun into his back, forcing him forwards.

The doors opened and Daryl pushed him inside before the group followed,

Vivian looked around at the large group. Not many of them had guns. They had close range weapons. So if they took out the firing squad first, they could keep out of reach of the others and take them all down without a hassle.

Guillermo approached them, "I see my guns but they're not all in the bag."

"That's because they're not yours. I thought I mentioned that." Rick responded,

"Let's just shoot these fools right now, ese. All right?" Felipe told his leader, "Unload on their asses, ese."

Vivian stepped forward, "We have guns, too, ese." She snapped back, "There may be less of us, but we have more firepower."

Guillermo glared at her, "I don't think you fully appreciate the gravity of the situation."

"No, I'm pretty clear." Rick lowered his gun to cut Miguel's rope that held his hands together and tossed him to Jorge, "You have your man. I want mine."

Guillermo's face turned red and he stepped towards Rick, "I'm gonna chop up your boy. I'm gonna feed him to my dogs. They're the evilest, nastiest man-eating bitches you ever saw. I picked them up from Satan at a yard sale. I told you how it has to be. Are you woefully deaf?"

"No, my hearing's fine. You said come locked and loaded." The group cocked their guns and put their fingers on the trigger, "Okay then, we're here."

Vivian smirked at the man in front of her that gripped a metal baseball bat, "Think I can't pull the trigger before you swing? Try me."

"Felipe! Felipe!" A hoarse, feminine voice called out into the crowd, "Felipe!"

The crowd stepped aside and an older woman in a night gown approached the bald man, "Abuela, go back with the others... now." Felipe ordered,

"Get that old lady out of the line of fire!" Daryl yelled,

"Abuela, listen to your mijo, okay? This is the not the place for you right now." Guillermo told the woman,

"Mr. Gilbert is having trouble breathing. He needs his asthma stuff. Carlito didn't find it. He needs his medicine." The woman said to Felipe,

Rick lowered his gun and the others followed suit, "Felipe, go take care of it, okay? And take your grandmother with you." Guillermo hissed at Felipe

Felipe reached for his grandmother but she kept her eyes on Rick, "Who are those men?" She asked, pushing Felipe's arm away,

"Por favor, ven conmigo." Felipe called out to her in Spanish,

"Don't you take him." Felipe's grandmother said as she approached Rick,

Rick raised his eyebrows, "Ma'am?"

"Felipe's a good boy. He has his trouble but he pulls himself together. We need him here." She told him,

"Ma'am, I'm not here to arrest your grandson." Rick informed the older woman,

"Then what do you want him for?" She asked,

"He's..." He looked over at Vivian, silently asking for some help,

Vivian stepped forward, "He's helping us find a missing person. Fella named Glenn."

"The Asian boy? He's with Mr. Gilbert." The woman reached for Vivian's hand, "Come. Come, I'll show you."

Vivian glanced back at Rick and he nodded, signalling that it was okay to follow. She reached for Rick's hand and followed the woman. Guillermo let them pass and they all followed Felipe's grandmother through the warehouses and into another building.

Vivian and Rick shared a confused look as they looked around. Inside the rooms were lots of elderly people.

Was this a nursing home?

"Abuela, por favor. Take me to him." Felipe asked his grandmother and she let go of Vivian's hand to lead him away.

They continued followed them until they reached what seemed like a rec room, filled with round tables and chairs. In the middle was an older man, who they assumed was Mr Gilbert, who was struggling to catch his breath.

Felipe stood beside him, holding an inhaler to his mouth, "All right. All right. Nice and easy. Just breathe. Just breathe. Just let it out. Just breathe. Just relax."

"Glenn." Vivian sighed in relief, spotting him standing within the group. She walked over and wrapped her arms around him,

"What the hell is this?" Rick asked,

"An asthma attack. Couldn't get his breath all of a sudden." Glenn answered as Vivian pulled away,

"I thought you were being eaten by dogs, man." T-Dog snapped,

Glenn turned to reveal three Chihuahuas that were sitting in a dog bed. Marcie smirked, Satan's dogs? She could drop kick those things across the room if she wanted.

Rick pulled Guillermo to the side and Marcie went to hug Glenn, "Glad you're alright."

Soon the group was pulled aside away from the eyes of the residents,

Marcie got a better look at the building. She thought the Vatos was a group of big, dangerous men. But in reality they were taking care of those who can't take care of themselves in a dangerous new world.

"What about the rest of your crew?" Rick asked,

"The Vatos trickle in to check on their parents, their grandparents. They see how things are and most decide to stay. It's a good thing too. We need the muscle." Guillermo sat on the edge of a desk, "The people we've encountered since things fell apart, the worst kind... plunderers, the kind that take by force."

"That's not who we are." Rick insisted,

"How was I to know? My people got attacked and you show up with Miguel hostage..." Guillermo trailed off, "appearances."

"Guess the world changed." T-Dog commented, sitting against the wall,

Guillermo shook his head, "No. It's the same as it ever was. The weak get taken. So we do what we can here. The Vatos work on those cars, talk about getting the old people out of the city. But most can't even get to the bathroom by themselves, still, it keeps the crew busy, and that's worth something." He explained, "So we barred all the windows, welded all the doors shut except for one entrance. The Vatos, they go out, scavenge what they can to keep us going. We watch the perimeter night and day and we wait. The people here, they all look to me now. I don't even know why."

"Because they can." Rick stated before holding out the shotgun that was in his hands to him,

Rick set the bag of guns down before going through them, setting some down on the desk Guillermo was sat on. He even gave him loads of ammo. Once they were done, they shook Guillermo's hand before they began making the trek back to their van, searching for Merle as they did,

"Admit it," Vivian sighed and smiled over at Rick, "you only came back to Atlanta for the hat."

Rick smirked over at her, "Don't tell anybody."

"You've given away half our guns and ammo." Daryl spat,

"Not nearly half."

"For what?" He glared, "Bunch of old farts who are gonna die off momentarily anyhow? Seriously, how long you think they got?"

Rick paused for a moment, "How long do any of us?"

Marcie glanced around the bus, looking past the fence where they left the van. Or at least, that's where she thought they left the van, "Uh, guys?"

Glenn followed her line of sight, "Oh my God."

"Where the hell's our van?"

"We left it right there. Who would take it?" Glenn questioned,

Rick's jaw clenched, "Merle."

Daryl looked over at the sheriff, "He's gonna be taking some vengeance back to camp."

"Then we better start running." Vivian sighed,
