chapter 122

THE SOUND OF GLASS SHATTERING CAUGHT A LOT OF PEOPLE'S ATTENTION.
Finn grabbed Liam while Vivian clutched Judith to her chest. The Davis siblings ran towards the source of the noise, ending up in front of Jessie's house, where Rick and Pete were physically fighting each other.
Quite the crowd had gathered, basically everyone. Both the men had cuts across their face from the glass, and they were rolling around on the asphalt, taking turns punching and choking each other out.
Jessie tried to get Pete off of Rick, but the man slapped her away. It gave Rick the distraction he needed to get on top.
But when Carl went to stop him, Rick pushed him away. Vivian was quick to hand Judith over to Debbie before going to the boy and helping him to his feet, "Are you okay?" She asked him, cupping his cheeks,
He nodded, his eyes moving back to his father. Vivian kept him against her, the two of them watching as Rick got the upper hand and got a choke hold on Pete,
"Stop it right now." Deanna demanded as she ran up to the crowd,
"You touch them again and I'll kill you." Vivian could hear Rick growl into Pete's ear,
"Damn it, Rick!" Deanna cried out angrily, "I said stop."
Tobin went to separate the two, and Rick pulled away from Pete. He moved onto his knees and pulled his gun out, aiming it at the man, "Or what? You gonna kick me out?"
Vivian could see the panic in everyone's eyes. One tick, and he could pull the trigger and seriously hurt someone.
He could get them all banished from Alexandria.
She tightened her hold on Carl and made eye contact with her brother, telling him to back away with the kids.
"Put that gun down, Rick." Deanna begged, her hands up in surrender,
He lowered the gun, "You still don't get it." He looked around at all of them, "None of you do! We know what needs to be done and we do it. We're the ones who live. You, you just sit and plan and hesitate. You pretend like you know when you don't." Rick was still swinging the gun around and Vivian's nerves grew,
He looked like a psychopath, with blood running down his face and the crazy look in his eyes.
Vivian wanted to say she's never seen him like this before, but that would be a lie. She's seen this side of Rick many times before.
"You wish things weren't what they are. Well, you want to live? You want this place to stay standing? Your way of doing things is done. Things don't get better because you want them to. Starting right now, we have to live in the real world. We have to control who lives here." Rick told Deanna,
"That's never been more clear to me than it is right now." She stated,
Vivian knew what she meant. Rick was the dangerous one to her, not Pete.
"Me? Me? You..." Rick laughed as he pointed at himself, "You mean- you mean me? Your way is gonna destroy this place. It's gonna get people killed. It's already gotten people killed." Vivian tensed at his words, reminding the group of Aiden and Noah, "And I'm not gonna stand by and just let it happen. If you don't fight, you die."
She spotted Michonne coming up to the group, gun in hand. They made eye contact and Vivian nodded, knowing what she needed to do.
"I'm not gonna stand by-"
Rick's sentence was interrupted by Michonne coming up behind him and hitting him in the back of the head with the butt of her gun.
Finn and Spencer dragged Rick to a townhouse that was still under construction, and Tobin grabbed a mattress for him to rest on. Debbie dropped the kids off with Maggie and Glenn before grabbing the first aid kit to clean up Rick's cuts.
Michonne sat in the chair, in the corner, keeping watch. She stayed there all night, and she was pissed. Vivian didn't blame her, she was kept out of the loop.
The next morning, Deanna made an announcement. They were going to have a meeting that night, about what they were going to do with Rick and Pete.
Vivian had a bad feeling about it.
She stayed back with the kids, staying at Grimes' household to keep them all entertained. Debbie and Carl read comic books in his room while Vivian sat on the living room rug, playing with the younger kids.
She wasn't ready to listen to Rick's explanation.
Debbie came downstairs to grab a drink and some snacks before pausing. She moved over to the couch, watching Judith and Liam,
"Everything okay, Debs?"
Her gaze moved to Vivian, "If they kick Rick out... are you going with him?"
Vivian moved to her feet and faced her little sister, "Honey, they're not gonna kick Rick out."
"But he attacked Pete."
"That's because Pete's not a good guy." Vivian tried to explain,
"But... if they did get rid of Rick...." Debbie hesitated,
"I'm not going anywhere." Vivian promised, "You're not getting rid of me." She walked up to her sister and wrapped her arms around her, "I'm here for the long haul." Vivian spotted Carl standing on the stairs, and she gave him a quick wink.
The front door opened and they all turned to see Rick walking through the door, his jacket in his hands and face bandaged up. Carl jumped from the remaining stairs and hugged his dad, "You okay?"
"Yeah." Rick answered as they pulled away from each other and he made eye contact with Vivian, giving her a nod in thanks for watching the kids, "Look, I'm sorry." He told all of them,
"We heard about the meeting." Carl stated as they headed towards the kitchen. Vivian placed Judith on her hip while Liam sat unbothered, continuing to play with his toys.
"You're staying home." Rick ordered him,
Vivian paused for a second. It was the first time he referred to that house as their home,
"That's what it is now, right?" Carl voiced her thoughts, a smirk on his face, "Home?"
"Yeah."
"They need us." Carl told his father, "They'll die without us."
Rick sighed, "I might have to threaten one of them. I could have to kill one of them."
Debbie's eyes widened in horror. Ron was her friend, and she didn't want to know that Rick might kill her friend's father. Vivian reached over and squeezed her sister's hand,
"You won't." Carl stated, looking over at the redhead for a second, hoping his words would calm her down,
"I might."
"You have to tell them." Carl insisted,
"I told them last night." Rick argued,
"You have to tell them so they can hear you." The younger Grimes repeated,
"I don't know if they can." He told his son, "Does that make you afraid?"
Carl shook his head, "Just for them. You have to tell them."
Vivian made dinner for the kids before leaving them back at the house to attend the meeting. Dinner was quiet, the older ones scared of the unknown. The younger ones seemed to have sensed the somber mood, and they ate their food quietly.
The sun went down, and Vivian was walking down the street, pausing when she spotted the front gate.
There was no one around, and the gate was open.
"Shit."
She rushed over to close it before noticing a trail of blood. Walkers made it in, she hoped it wasn't too many.
Without alerting the community, she began running around, searching for the rotters with a knife in her hand. In the distance, she heard a dog barking. Vivian sprinted towards the source of the sound, spotting a few rotters banging on the back door, trying to get to the animal.
Vivian stabbed the first one in the head, alerting the second one to her presence. As she pushed the rotter back, another one snuck up on her.
Before the walker could reach her, Rick stabbed in in the back of the head. Vivian turned to him after she killed the second walker, "The gate's open." They both stated at the same time.
Rick nodded, grabbing the body of the lightest walker before they went towards where the meeting was being held. They walked up to the fire, everyone stopping and staring at them. Rick dropped the body in the middle of the circle, the members of Alexandria gasping at the site of the rotting body and the blood that was on the two's faces,
"There wasn't a guard on the gate." Rick panted, "It was open."
Deanna and the others turned to Spencer, who everyone knew was on guard, "I asked Gabriel to close it." He defended himself,
"Go." Deanna snapped at him and the man sprinted off,
"I didn't bring it in. It got inside on its own. They always will, the dead and the living, because we're in here." Rick explained, "And the ones out there... they'll hunt us. They'll find us. They'll try to use us. They'll try to kill us. But we'll kill them. We'll survive. I'll show you how."
Vivian stared at him as she moved over to her brother, who squeezed her arm, silently asking if she was okay. She gave him a quick nod before moving her focus back over to Rick,
"You know, I was thinking... I was thinking how many of you do I have to kill to save your lives?" Everyone stood in silence, thinking about the question he just asked.
Were they really gonna trust the man who just admitted he would willingly kill them?
"But I'm not gonna do that. You're gonna change." He turned to Deanna, "I'm not sorry for what I said last night. I'm sorry for not saying it sooner. You're not ready, but you have to be. Right now, you have to be. Luck runs out." Rick stated,
Before he could say anything else, movement caught Vivian's eye. Pete stomped towards the meeting, Michonne's sword in hand. Vivian stepped forward, pushing her brother behind her.
"You're not one of us." Pete growled, "You're not one of us!"
Vivian reached for her gun, only to remember it was confiscated long ago. She wished she had grabbed the one Carol gave her the other day,
Reg approached him, hands raised, "Pete, you don't want to do this."
"Get the hell away from me, Reg."
They began to struggle, Pete's eyes on Rick. Vivian's blood pressure began to raise, and she knew something real bad was about to happen.
Someone was gonna die.
"Get away!" Pete pushed Reg, using both his hands. The sword was being held in a way that the blade was pressed against Reg's throat, and as Pete pulled his hand back, it sliced Reg's throat open,
Vivian gasped, her hands covering her mouth in horror as blood squirted from Reg's wound. Deanna screamed, reaching for her husband who was now fading.
Abraham jumped forwards, with Michonne disarming the surgeon. The redhead pinned Pete to the ground as he screamed, "This is him!", while everyone watched as Deanna sobbed,
"Oh, God! Oh, my love, my love." She wailed, holding him on her arms while Reg choked on his blood, "No, my love, no."
Reg stopped struggling after only a minute, the life leaving his eyes. He went still and Deanna laid him on the ground before looking up at Rick, hate filling her eyes,
"Rick...do it."
