chapter 112
"NOT WEARING YOUR HAT?"
Vivian held Liam on her hip as she walked down the street with Carl and Judith. The boy had taken off his hat the night before and had yet to put it back on.
Carl shrugged, "Don't need it right now. I have a room now and might as well put things in it."
She smiled at the kid, "Good point. I'll have to start looking for decorations for your room when I go out there."
Deanna had given her the job as a supply runner along side Glenn, Tara, and Noah. Tomorrow they were going to meet up with the people in charge of runs and go on a test run.
"And comics, please."
"Oh, of course."
Vivian looked around the neighbourhood, not catching many faces. She assumed most people were at their assigned jobs for the day. She wondered what they did for hobbies, since you couldn't just leave the walls.
Her nose wrinkled at the smell of a cigarette and searched for the source of the smell. On the corner of the street, she spotted a person sitting on the railing, the cigarette between his lips.
Vivian paused, her eyes widening, "Vivian?"
She kept her eyes focused on the figure, blinking a few times to make sure the man were real.
"Finn." She whispered.
He still had his wild blonde hair that stuck up in random directions, and his bright blue eyes that belonged to their father. Finn looked older, from a distance, as if this world aged him.
It had been years since she's seen him. And it felt like a dream.
The man tossed the cigarette butt on the wood and smudged it in with his foot before going inside. But there was no mistaking it.
It was her younger brother.
"I'll be right back." Vivian handed Liam off to Carl before sprinting down the street,
Questions ran through her mind as she ran. How was that possible? They were in Chicago when it all went down, how did they end up in Virginia? Was it just him, or were all her siblings here in Alexandria?
Tears ran down her cheeks as Vivian jogged up the steps of the porch. She wiped them away as she stared down at the still warm cigarette butt on the porch before knocking on the door white door.
Her heart was beating loudly in her ears as she waited of rate door to open.
What if it wasn't him? What if she was just imagining it?
The door opened and Vivian let out a small sob as staring at the man confirmed it.
"Vivian?"
The woman lunged forward, wrapping her arms around her younger brother. Finn immediately took a step back, confused. He pulled away to stare at her face, tears of his own filling his blue eyes,
The blue eyes she remembered seeing before she stepped on that plane.
"What... how...?"
"Hi." She cried, trying to smile,
He wrapped his arm around her again and they began to cry into each other's shoulders.
Once they stopped crying and let go of each other, Finn led her into the house. It was messy, which didn't surprise Vivian much, but was still nicer than their house back in Illinois.
"You're part of the new group Aaron brought in? Where did you guys come from?" He questioned, walking into the living room and sitting on the couch, "God, I can't believe you're alive."
"I can't believe you're alive either." Vivian grinned, not taking her eyes off her brother as she sat down across from him, "And you're one to talk, how did you guys get out of Chicago? And why Virginia?"
"We took Jeff's truck, went to find you. Ended up being directed to Virginia, then to here." Finn explained, "You were in Georgia, how'd you get here?"
"We were in Georgia till about a month ago. A new kid in our group was from Richmond, and we were bringing him home. Turns out his community fell, and we were wandering when Aaron found us." Vivian told him, "God, I didn't think I'd ever see you again."
"Same here."
Vivian opened her mouth to ask about the rest of her siblings when the front door opened, "Finn, I'm back! I just met one of the new kids, he's so nice!"
Debbie's voice filled the house and tears filled Vivian's eyes once again. The two older Davis siblings stood, with Vivian's back facing the doorway, as the redhead entered the room, "Who's this?"
Vivian turned and Debbie dropped her bag, "Oh, my god."
"Hey, Debs."
The redhead only had to take a few steps before launching herself at her older sister. She began to cry into her chest, trying to come to terms with the situation,
"Look at you." Vivian pulled away and cupped her sister's face, "You grew up."
She had grown taller, and her baby fat was starting to shed. Debbie wasn't the little girl she left behind in Chicago.
"You're alive." Debbie whispered,
Vivian laughed, "Yeah, I'm alive."
The three Davis siblings sat on the couch, recounting their adventures that led them to this point. They talked until the sun went down, and Debbie fell asleep against her sister's side.
Vivian stroked her sister's red hair, her mind wandering to her other brothers. Finn seemed to sense this, "It's okay..." Finn sighed, "You can ask about them."
Vivian stared at her brother, "Are they dead?"
Finn shrugged, "Honestly? No clue. They were just... gone." He sighed, "Isaac was the first to go."
"It was his meds, wasn't it?" Vivian asked,
Isaac was bipolar. It had shown up when he was seventeen. It's had caused him to act out, and at some points he was dangerous. He needed his meds, and Vivian knew how hard that must've been for him once the world ended.
"We had found a supply of them, and they kept him stable for a while. But then, we ran out. He went out on a supply run one day and didn't come back. Aiden and Nicholas told us he had an episode, freaked out on them before running away." Finn explained,
"So he could still be alive." Vivian stated,
Finn shrugged, "Could be. Emmett went to look for him. Snuck over the walls in the middle of the night and we haven't seen him since. That was like... six months ago? We just assumed they died."
"They both could have survived out there, you know that." Vivian encouraged him,
"Yeah, but no one can make it alone these days, Viv. And with Isaac's mental state, who knows what he could've done to himself." He reasoned,
Vivian instantly felt guilty. She should've been there to protect them, to keep them together. Instead she was halfway across the country. And while they were looking for her, she wasn't doing the same.
"What about dad?"
Finn scoffed, "Got drunk and was ripped apart right at the start. Fucker didn't even last a day."
"Not surprised." Vivian moved her gaze to her sister, "My group's probably worried about me."
"You can move in here, if you want." Finn offered, "We got a few extra bedrooms. House gets lonely just the two of us."
Vivian wanted to jump at the offer. To live with her siblings again, it'll be almost like the world never ended.
But Rick didn't even want them to separate into two different houses.
"I'll have to see. But I would love to. I'm sure eighteen people in two houses will be a little crowded." Vivian reasoned.
Finn carried their sister to her bedroom, and Vivian tucked her in. She would have loved to crawl into the bed next to her, but she needed to get back before Rick sent out a search party.
It was nearly pitch black out as she wandered back to the house, only with a few porch lights and the full moon leading her way.
She wasn't far down the street before she spotted a figure approaching her. Vivian reached for her knife before the moon illuminated his face,
"Where have you been?" Rick hissed quietly as he reached her. Before she could answer, he grabbed her arm and began leading her back towards the house, "We've been worried."
"It's not like I could've climbed the walls." She mumbled.
Rick walked up the porch steps, Vivian behind him. She stood on the top steps and spoke as he reached for the doorknob,
"My brother and sister are here."
He paused, his hand lowering from the handle, "The ones that were back in Chicago during the outbreak?" He asked, turning around to see her face,
Tears filled her eyes as she nodded and smiled, "They're alive. Some of them, at least." Vivian wiped at her tears, "I didn't think I was ever going to see them again. But they're here. They made it all the way here."
"What are you saying?"
"Eighteen is too many for two houses." Vivian stated,
Rick stared at her for a long moment before speaking, "So you're just gonna leave?"
"I'll just be a few houses down, Rick. It's not like we're never gonna see each other again." She reasoned, "You would do the same in my shoes."
"Is this because of me?' He asked her, "Because of-"
"Don't." Vivian crossed her arms, "I need space. I need... time. And I need my family."
"We're your family."
"Of course you are." Vivian gave him a harsh glare, "All of you. But I need them right now. Please, Rick." Why she was begging for his permission, she didn't know. She was going to go anyway, with or without his acceptance, "This isn't about you, I promise."
But that was a lie, and they both knew it.
