chapter 106

MARCIE LAID IN DARYL'S ARMS, FACING HIM.

It had been a long time since she's seen him sleep. Even back at the prison, he was the last to bed and the first to rise.

He's deserved rest, more than the rest of them.

She brushed some of his hair out of his face and his eyelids fluttered open, "Mornin'." Marcie whispered, a small smile on her face.

Last night had been...a dream. In a good way, to Marcie. They had taken their relationship to another level. They had never discussed the terms of connection, never called each other boyfriend or girlfriend, but they both knew they were so much more.

Even after the farm, when they were separated physically, their emotions for each other grew.

There was a knock on the door and the two sat up suddenly, with Daryl reaching for the comforter to cover their nude bodies.

Vivian's head peeked through the now open door, "Hey, we're heading..." She paused when she spotted their red cheeks, "Uh...We'll just wait... downstairs..."

She closed the door and the two scrambled to get their clothes on. Daryl went downstairs to ask to Rick while Marcie finished up.

She stood in her doorway, staring around at her childhood room.

It was the end of an era.

Everybody piled into the vans. Marcie sat in the back, next to Daryl, while Vivian sat in the passenger seat with Liam on her lap so he could look out the window.

It took only around an hour before they reached the border to North Carolina, "Goodbye, Georgia." Vivian whispered as she spotted the signs.

It took four days to get to Virginia. Multiple times the group had to stop to refuel, search for food and water, and even more gas.

The group settled about ten miles away from Noah's settlement. Most stayed there while a small group decided to go to Noah's group to scout it out and make sure it was safe first.

Vivian wanted to go. As much as she liked being Liam's caretaker, she needed to go out on her own.

So she climbed into the back of the SUV with Glenn, while Michonne and Rick sat in front of her and Tyreese drove with Noah in the passenger seat, giving directions.

"How far out?" Rick asked after a few minutes,

"Five miles." Noah answered,

Rick nodded before lifting the radio to his lips, "Hey, Carol."

"I'm here." The older woman responded,

"We're halfway there. Just wanted to check the range."

"Everybody's holding tight. We've made it 500 miles. Maybe this can be the easy part." Carol tried to be positive,

"Got to think we're due." Rick replied, "Give us 20 minutes to check in."

"We don't hear from you, we'll come looking." Carol informed him,

"Copy that."

"I've been wanting to tell you something." Noah spoke up, glancing over at Tyreese,

"What's that?"

"The trade. It was the right play. It worked. It did work. Just something else happened after." Noah reassured them,

"It went the way it had to. The way it was always going to." Tyreese told him,

Vivian wasn't there, but Marcie had told them everything that had happened. The trade for Beth and Marcie, Beth stepping up to protect Noah and dying in the process.

"I never wanted to kill anybody before." Noah stated,

"I've wanted that. But it just made it so I didn't see anything except what I wanted. I wasn't facing it."

"Facing what?" The younger male asked him,

"What happened, what's going on." The driver answered, "My dad always told Sasha and me that it was our duty as citizens of the world to keep up with the news. When I was little and I was in his car, there were always those stories on the radio. Something happens 1,000 miles away or down the block. Some kind of horror I couldn't even wrap my head around. But he didn't change the channel. He didn't turn it off. He just kept listening. To face it. Keeping your eyes open. My dad always called that paying the high cost of living."

Vivian watched as Glenn fiddled with a CD in his hands. Everyone had gone through the same things that Tyreese went through, well, not exactly. But they've all wanted revenge at one point, and had been blinded by it.

"I lost my dad in Atlanta. I think he would have liked yours." Noah stated, "Still got a mom and a couple of twin brothers. I hope."

"I hope so, too."

The kid glanced back towards Rick, "Two more miles."

"All right." Rick reached forward and tapped Tyreese's shoulder, "Let's pull into the woods. We'll go on foot. Stay off the road."

"We don't need to." Noah insisted,

"Just in case."

Tyreese pulled off into the woods, stopping by some other broken down trucks. Glenn opened the back door, helping Vivian out before they searched the area for any immediate dangers,

"This is good. Through the trees, it might just look like part of the wreck."

A walker in one of the trucks hit against the window, distracting the group,

"It's this way." Noah pointed behind him,

They followed him through the woods until they came across a bunch of wires that created a fence, a good way to keep the walkers out,

"Your people do this?" Michonne asked the kid,

"Wanted to. They must have." He answered,

They all began to climb through the fences and Vivian winced as the last wire cut above her eyebrow,

"You all right?" Rick grabbed her face to check the wound,

She nodded, "Yeah, 'm fine." Vivian pulled away and continued following the others towards Noah's community,

They came across a road and Rick stepped up next to Noah, "They have spotters? Snipers?"

"We built a perch on a truck. Sometimes it's out front." Noah answered,

Vivian and Glenn inspected the area around the walls, not finding any truck, "Not today." Glenn informed them,

The group kept their weapons ready as they stepped out onto the asphalt. They passed by a large grandfather clock that laid broken in the road before reaching the front gates.

Vivian knew something was wrong by the look on Noah's face as he pressed his ear against the gate,

"You hear that?"

There was nothing. They didn't hear anything, which was the problem.

"Just wait."

Glenn climbed up the fence to peer over the boards. He looked back at them, a look of devastation across his face.

They all moved to climb the fence. Vivian stayed at the top for a moment, looking around at the burned down buildings and the corpses in the grass.

She hopped over the side and landed on the road. Noah was ahead, limping as fast as he could through the streets.

"Noah, hold up." Rick called out,

The kid came to a stop in an intersection and he began to sob uncontrollably. He collapsed onto his back and rolled around, not trying to contain his grief.

Vivian stared at the 'WOLVES NOT FAR' sign that was painted into the brick.

Wolves?

Tyreese went to comfort the kid while the others stood there. Michonne went to take out a walker and Vivian turned to Rick,

"What are we gonna do now?" She asked quietly,

"We have to move on." Rick answered. He holstered his gun and moved to kneel down in front of the crying kid, "I'm sorry, Noah. I truly am." He stood, "We should see if there's anything we can use and head back."

"Then what?" Michonne snapped. They all turned to look at her, they knew she was really betting on this place, and she was just upset that it wasn't what they were hoping it was, "They see us."

She went to go take out the small group of walkers while Glenn stepped up, "We can make a quick sweep."

"I'll stay with him." Tyreese stated, motioning to Noah,

Rick nodded before he moved away, grabbing the radio, "Carol, you copy?"

"We're here."

"We made it." He paused, "It's gone."

Vivian followed Glenn and Michonne over to a house, where they were going through a garage that someone had already picked through.

On the ground was a framed Yankees jersey, signed by some player. Vivian used her boot to smash the glass and picked up the shirt, shaking the shards from it.

Rick watched as she did this and she glanced over at him, "Clean shirt. Thought Carl would like it." She shrugged,

He reached for her arm, "We'll figure it out."

Vivian nodded, "We will." She sighed before following Michonne into the garage, where she was getting garbage bags for them to use.

The two were silent as they continued to pick through the things while listening to Glenn and Rick speak,

"After it happened, right after with Beth in the hospital, I saw that woman Dawn. She didn't mean to do it. I knew it. I saw it. But I wanted to kill her. I remember I just wondered if it even mattered one way or another. Didn't have a thing to do with Beth. I don't know if I thought it would still be here. But Beth wanted to get him here. She wanted to get him back home. This was for her. And it could have been for us, too."

"I was thinking about that guy in the storage container. Back at Terminus. How I made us stop. After the prison, on my trip, I got Maggie back. Things went okay. Losing Washington... losing- losing Beth right after just finding out she's alive..." Glenn bent down and picked up a novelty baseball bat, "I hadn't caught up with you yet. If it were now, I wouldn't make us stop. We'd run right by. And I would have shot that woman dead. Right or wrong."

Michonne faced the men, "We need to stop. You can be out here too long."

She was right. And at this moment, they were on the breaking point. They need something stable, a home.

There had to be something out there, right?
