Peri would say Craig's reaction in the next few minutes was probably fair.
"What did you do?" Jason blinked. "Where's the fire?"
Craig was obviously panicking. "I don't know, I don't know what I did!"
"That looked like magic." Ryan commented, taking on of my hands and staring at it.
"Didn't you say you learned a bit of magic from your mom?" Eryan questioned.
"Yeah, but like just good luck charms. That wasn't a good luck charm." Craig wheezed, staring at his hand.
"If I may." Peri interrupted, landing on Craig's arm, stared at for a long time.
"Let me see." Lafayette, landed on the ground to Craig.
"No. I got this, trust me." Peri insisted, trying not to be intimidated by the the other bird's size.
"I think you're underestimating my knowledge of magic." Lafayette shot back.
"I think you're forgetting the fact that I'm Craig's familiar." Peri finished.
Lafayette scowled, but stood to the side as Craig let Peri walk all over his hands.
"Do you know what is was?" Craig asked.
"Translate for us please." Ryan inquired politely.
"I got you." Lucy assured.
"It's definitely magic." Peri concluded.
"Well, no duh." Lafayette rolls his eyes.
"Shut up."
"Peri?" Oratio piped up.
Peri looked up at him as he walked closer, slowly. The fox tilted his head at Peri in question.
"Can I?" He asked gently.
Peri's eyes narrowed and his shot Oratio a doubtful look. "I guess. Oratio's gonna give you a look Craig."
He nodded, swallowing. Oratio hopped up on Craig's lapped and sniffed his hand. He gave it a small lick, and Craig laughed despite himself. Then the fox jumped to the floor and sniffed at the burn mark on the bus, which was still very much present.
Oratio's ear flew back and he yanked his head away. "First of all, this isn't no ordinary fire."
"I mean that part was obvious." Eryan continued after translating for the rest of the humans. "I mean that guy was holding fire in his bare hands, that's some sort of dangerous magic right there."
"It's..." Oratio tilted his head again. "It's not good."
Oratio met Peri's glanced and the four familiars shared a look. They had a corrupted familiar and a Daímonas following them. Peri swallowed dryly, that wasn't good.
"Do you think...do you think the wolf we saw, Matri, might have been that guy's familiar?" Craig asked, still a little creeped out by his hand.
"Maybe." Peri lied to him, shooting looks at the other four to keep thier muzzles and beaks shut.
"Did he look old enough for a familiar?" Ryan frowned. "He looked pretty young to me."
"He said he knew where Felix was." Craig frowned, glancing down at his feet. "We could've used that information to find him faster, if what Peri said is true, aren't we supposed to get to him as soon as possible?"
Peri winced. "Craig, I wouldn't have trusted you with that boy. He's dangerous."
"Felix is in danger!" Craig argued back. "I thought that's what this whole trip was about."
Peri noticed how tired he looked. Craig had bags under his eyes, and his hands were shaking slightly. The poor boy. Peri pushed a little of his magic into him, it was something familiars could do if their humans were feeling weak. It let Peri know what Craig was feeling, which was panicked an confused, and it also made him feel a little better.
"We'll find him." Eryan assured.
Craig pulled his knees up to his chest, aware that he had yelled. Peri sighed, and landed on his knee, trying to show his support.
"Are you guys gonna tell me what's up with my magic or are you gonna keep that a secret too?" He asked bitterly.
Oratio's ears perked up. "Right! See what you did doesn't smell like what's on the bus, the fire smell. I'm guessing it's a counter spell, a parry of sorts. It's actually feels more like what the Tree of Zoi's magic is like, which makes we wondered if it's inherited. Most magic is learned, but occasionally family specific magic is passed on through the family tree, named after Zoi."
Eryan translated and Ryan frowned. "Well that informations useless then. We don't know who our parents were."
"It's...biological?" Craig raised an eyebrow.
"Yes." I confirmed.
"Does that mean I might be able to do that too?" Ryan realized.
"Theoretically." Lucy tilted her head.
Ryan pulled out her dagger and concentrated. "Magic knife."
Nothing happens of course, but Peri sensed it made Craig feel a little better. Lucy laughed, and Ryan scratched her head gently.
"Do you have anything to add to this Jason? You've been kind of quiet." Eryan glanced over at him
Jason had been staring off into space. "Huh? Oh uh. I was just...thinking. I don't think Matri is Eddie's familar."
"Why not?" Eryan asked.
Jason shrugged. "Just a hunch."
The bus shuddered all of a sudden, and there was a loud scraping noise.
"It's hitting the ground again!" Ryan realized. "Craig!"
His head shot up and his hands slapped against the floor, immediately the bus floated back up to it's regular height. Craig lifted his hands up again and the bright green handprint was back.
"That's so rad." Ryan marveled, she kept trying to reenact it.
Craig still looked shaken up. "Yeh but what are they exactly? The power to make the Scobi bus float? That's it very useful."
Oratio was on his lap again and he sniffed Craig's hands again.
"You smell like Zoi. That's all I know." The fox concluded, sitting down next to Eryan.
"Maybe..." Craig hesitated. "Maybe if we see Persephone again, well it was only me who saw her the first time but she seems like the kinds of person who would know about Zoi, maybe she can tell us something about...I don't know."
"Wait...Persephone?" Jason frowned. "As in queen? As in the daughter of previous King Jacob?"
"You met the queen?" Eryan blinked.
"I ran into her at the Capital." I shrugged. "She was really nice and...I don't now."
"Absolutely not." Jason scoffed. "I'm not going to talk to her."
We all turned to stared at him.
"Why not?" Ryan demanded.
Jason huffed. "It's personal."
Eryan squinted at him in confusion as is she were having trouble understanding him period. I turned my focus back to Craig who was still staring at his hands.
"You've got cool powers now, huh?" He asked, tilting his head at Craig.
Craig bit his lip. "It just reminds me of Eddie, I'm not really comfortable with that."
Peri clicked his beak together. Oh dear. "Well you're way different from that guy. I wouldn't worry about it."
He still looked discontent.
"Hey." Peri demanded. "It's gonna be fine. We still have time to find Felix, we're almost to Zestos."
Craig sighed. "Thanks."
He smiled, and gave a weak thumbs up. Peri let out a breath, Craig was doing okay again. He glanced across the room to where Lafayette was perched, looking discontent with being shoved aside for Oratio.
Yeah, Peri didn't like him at all.
