XXXVIII. Found

I wake up as the sun shines into our room. Yawning, I stretch out, so glad that I got to sleep in today. Between the girl newbie, and a bunch of other random injuries, it had been decided that I would stay and help the med-jacks today.

I look at my watch and realize I'm up earlier than I thought, the doors are still closed, which means Minho and Kate haven't left yet. I throw on some clothes and jog downstairs, waving to
Newt and frypan when I pass by the kitchen.

"Hey babe, what are you doing here?" Minho asks when I reach the doors.

"Ya, I thought you were staying with the med-jacks today?" Kate adds.

"Oh, I am."

"Then why are you here?" she asks.

"I came to say goodbye obviously." I answer, rolling my eyes like its the most obvious thing in world. Minho smiles and gives me a quick kiss, just as the doors start to open. I can see Kate behind him, sticking her finger down her throat, pretending to gag. I laugh and turn to walk away.

"See ya later, be careful!" I tell them as they start to run off into the maze.

"As always." Minho yells back to me, disappearing around a corner.

"That's the problem, you're never careful." I mutter to myself, watching him go. I shudder at the sight of Ben's empty collar, laying on the stone floor. I'm glad I didn't have to watch that.

"Come on Sky, you can stare at your boyfriend later." Clint says pulling me out of my thoughts.

"I wasn't I... Oh nevermind." I answer trotting behind him to the homestead. Inside the girl sleeps, muttering incoherent words as she moves restlessly about.

"What is she saying?" I ask Jeff, who is currently trying to feed her some soupy stuff.

"Most of it doesn't make sense, but she keeps saying Thomas' name over and over again." He answers, glancing up nervously. That's weird, she hasn't been awake long enough to know anyone's name? Which means she remembers him. I wonder what else she remembers?

"I need you over here!" Clint says motioning to where a builder sits with a nail stuck all the way through his hand, blood oozing out both sides.

"How the shuck did you do that?" I ask the builder.

"I wasn't paying attention." He replies with a shrug. I shake my head, readying the stitches and bandage.

"Well Adam why don't you pay more attention next time." Clint answers moving to hold him down, there is only one way to do this, and it isn't pretty.

"On three." I say wrapping the tips of my fingers around the edge of the nail.
Adam winces, bracing for the pain.

"One."

"Two." On two I pull, sliding the nail up, until it is free of his hand. I've found its better when the patient isn't expecting it, which is why I went at two instead of three. Adam screams anyways, thrashing around on the table. Once he calms down, we clean out the wound the best we can before stitching it up.

"Hey you're that girl that survived the maze?" Adam asks suddenly, as I wrap a bandage around his hand.

"Mmhm." I mutter taping the bandage into place.

"That's incredible! How did you do it?" And here I thought I was past the 'glade legend' stage. A couple of weeks after the incident, everyone had finally gone back to treating me like normal, or at least I'd thought. I just shrug, not really wanting to talk about it.

"Adam leave her alone." Clint says giving me an apologetic look. "Sky will you go get some more water?"

"Ya sure." I reply, more than happy to get away from the awkward situation. I'm almost outside, when I hear Thomas' frantic shouts.

"Newt! Alby! Somebody get them!" He yells from across the glade. He stands by the door to the maze looking down at something. No, someone.

Minho. I'd recognize him anywhere. My heart sinks at the sight of him collapsed on the floor in front of the maze door, he's back hours early. What if he got stung? What if he goes crazy like Ben? What if.... I put my thoughts on hold, sprinting across the glade to get to him.

"What happened?! are you ok?" I ask kneeling down beside him, completely ignoring Thomas, who kneels beside me.

"I'm fine." He says breathlessly. I exhale a sigh of relief, he's alive.

"Did you get stung?" I ask, worriedly looking him over. I've never seen him this exhausted, not ever.

"No Sky, I'm just out of breath." He says, pushing himself up into a sitting position. I relax a little, but I'm still concerned about whatever made him come back almost three hours early.

"don't you run the maze every day?" Thomas asks. We both turn our heads in his direction, Stupid greenies, I think shaking my head.

"Ya shuck-face I do, Let's just say I got a little excited and ran extra fast." Minho answers.

"What happened?" Alby asks, finally showing up.

"Get me some water and I'll tell you." Minho responds. Alby looks at Thomas and then at Minho.

"He's the only one who gets to talk to me like that." Alby says before jogging off to get Minho some water. Minho and I both laugh at Alby's attempt to scare the newbie.

"You scared of that shank?" Minho asks Thomas, when we notice him staring at us wide eyed for laughing.

"What? Isn't he the leader?" Thomas asks innocently.

"Wow you've got a lot to learn. Shucking newbies." Minho says shaking his head. Thomas is about to reply when Alby returns with Minho's water.

"Alright start talking." Alby says, handing Minho a water bottle.

"I found a dead one." He says.

"A dead what?" Alby asks.

"Griever, just laying there." Minho explains. I gasp, a dead griever? Did Ben kill it? Is he still alive?

"Don't joke with me." Alby says looking shocked.

"Do you think I sprinted all the way back for a shuck joke?" Minho snaps.

"We have to study it!" I say, again I get the strange feeling that we are running out of time. At this point anything could help.

"We could probably make it there and back before sundown." Minho says titling his head. I can almost see his mind spinning, trying to calculate how long it would take to go there and back.

"No we'll wait till tomorrow." Alby says.

"Smartest thing you've said all week." Minho answers, clapping Alby on the back. " I should go back out there, but shuck it I'm gonna go get some of frypan's food. Sky you coming?"

"Unfortunately I have to get back to the med-jacks." I sigh.

"All right see ya later."

"See ya." I say to all three of them, jogging back to the homestead.

"What happened?" Clint asks when I get back. He must have heard all the yelling.

"Minho found a dead griever." I answer.

"Seriously?" Mal asks in shock.

"Yep." I answer, popping the 'p'. Thinking of a dead Griever, I finger the tooth I still wear around my neck. A constant reminder of what happens if you stay in the maze after dark.

"Wow."

The next morning I stand at the doors, seeing off Alby and Minho into the maze. I'm stuck with med-jack duty again, although I'd much rather go study the dead griever.

"Be careful." I tell Minho for at least the fifth time that morning. Playing with grievers is dangerous work, I would know, and I'm scared to death something bad will happen.

"Oh for the last time, I will." He huffs, getting annoyed with my pestering. I want to tell him to consider it payback for when I was hurt, but decide against it.

"Sorry, I just don't want something to happen." I apologize. Minho can take care of himself.

"I know, it will be fine." He says, his voice softening as he gives me a half hearted smile. He doesn't promise, as it's a promise none of us can keep. We can never promise that we'll make it back, because you just never know. I wait with them until the doors open, not ready to go to the homestead.

"Bye! See ya later!" I call out as they run into the maze, having to bite my tongue to keep myself from reminding them to be careful again.

"Oh and Alby, I'll want my boyfriend back!" I shout. He turns around long enough to give me a thumbs up and an eye roll, before sprinting off after Minho, who is already way ahead of him.

I sigh, this is going to be a long day, and I can't shake the bad feeling that something just isn't right.
