XXXVII. Surprise, Surprise
I wake up and roll over, brining my eyes into focus as I look at my watch. Crap I'm gonna be late, why didn't Kate wake me up? I rip off the covers, and jump up. Quickly I throw on my clothes, still pulling on my shirt as I jog out the door. Luckily, no one is in the hallway. I snatch an apple from the kitchen as I run out into the glade, no time for breakfast today.
I wave to Newt as I pass by where he stands with Thomas, showing him the a griever through the window. He waves back and rolls his eyes, annoyed with the new greenie. Newt isn't a fan of questions. I feel bad for Thomas though, last night Gally tricked him into going into Ben's room. Seeing the changing is bad enough when you've been here a while, I can't imagine seeing it on the first day, and now he's looking at a griever. Poor kid, he's gonna have nightmares forever.
"Well you're late." Minho comments when I jog up to the already opening doors, half eaten apple still in hand.
"Morning to you too." I say tossing my apple to the ground as I take off jogging.
"Sorry babe, be careful." He laughs as we split, turning down different corridors. Kate and I run together a little further before she turns off into her section.
"See ya Kate."
"See ya Sky!" She yells, her voice echoing off the towering stone walls of the maze.
Sighing I run down my corridor, barely slowing as I slice a piece of ivy off the walls. Over the weeks I have gotten good at doing simple tasks without stopping, note taking for example. At first I had to almost stop when I wrote something, now I do it almost without thinking. Knowing your section helps too, as you can turn corners without looking. I don't take as many notes as I used too, now that I know the maze, I mostly rely on my memory.
As usual I find nothing new, and turn to head back to the glade, I didn't have time to pack a lunch today, so I don't bother to stop for a break. Just quick sip of water, then it's off and running again. I watch as a red light blinks from behind the ivy. A beetle blade, the creators spies. Hmm...the creators are watching me? I smirk, look straight at the beetle blade, and stick out my tongue. Then I fling my knife, pinning the beetle to the wall, the red light blinking twice before going out. Take that creators. I decide it's not dangerous if it's dead, and rip out my knife, picking up the beetle by one of its legs and tossing it into my backpack before jogging off.
I reach the glade a half hour early, due to not taking a lunch break. I come back to find the glade in complete chaos, people running about, speaking to each other in hushed whispers.
"Good you're back." Newt says, rushing past me towards the homestead. "Hurry up and map, then head to the med-jack room."
"What's going on?" I ask suddenly worried that it might involve Minho or Kate, what if one of them got stung? My best friend or boyfriend, neither of which I want to lose.
"No time, I'll explain later, just go." He says hurrying off. That pretty much rules out anyone getting stung, it takes like three seconds to explain that. Plus, someone getting stung wouldn't cause this much chaos. Confused, I head to the map room, anxious to get it over with and figure out what's going on.
"Would someone please tell me what's going on?" I ask falling into step next to Mal, who is walking quickly towards the homestead, a bucket of water in her hand.
"Um, Where do I start...." She sighs as we walk.
"At the beginning!" I yell, impatient and wanting answers.
"Ok, ok, well first off we got another greenie today."
"What?!" I shout cutting her off. "Two in a row?"
"Ya and that's not the weirdest part, she's was in a coma, woke up for five seconds, said 'everything is going to change' and passed back out." She explains as we reach the homestead.
"I'm assuming she's still out?" I ask following her upstairs. She nods.
"And she had a note saying she's the last one ever."
The last one ever. There's not much that could mean, besides that were never going to get another greenie. Ever. The thought scares me, what if....
"Aaaaannnd Ben escaped and tried to kill Thomas, then Alby shot him with a bow." Mal says cutting off my thoughts.
"Woah." Is all I can manage. "You've had quite a day." I mumble following her into the med-jack room.
"Hey no one allowe- oh hey Mal, Sky. Sorry I thought you were someone else." Clint says when we walk in, quickly going back to his work. In one bed lays Ben, arrow hole in his face, Jeff attempting to stitch it up. In the other bed lays a girl, the new greenie. Her hair is black, in stark contrast with her pale white skin, which shines with sweat. If it wasn't for the even rise and fall of her chest, I'd think she was dead.
"Weird huh?" Newt asks. I notice him for the first time, standing in the doorway behind us.
"That's the understatement of the day." I answer trying to take it all in.
"You don't recognize her do you?" He asks. Pointing to the sleeping girl in the corner of the room. I study her, trying to remember something. Anything. Suddenly I'm hit with a claustrophobic feeling, the room becoming far too small for all of us. I panic, starting to hyperventilate. I freeze for a moment, glancing around frantically before running out of the room and into the glade, gasping for air. What the shuck just happened?
"You ok?" Newt asks. He must have followed me out.
"Ya I just...."
"I know it's a lot to take in." He says turning to walk back inside. For now I let him think that I was just overwhelmed, and walk to the side of the homestead, sitting against the rough wooden structure. The panic subsides as I close my eyes. Why did I have a panic attack? No answer comes to mind, which seems to be a theme lately. No answers for my questions.
What if the note meant supplies too? What did she mean by 'things are going to change' ? What's going to change? When? What are they going to do with Ben? Why is she in a coma? Thoughts race through my mind, ideas coming and going till I have a headache, and none of them are good. Somehow it's feels like someone has put me on a timer, like every second the clock is ticking down, but why? I shake off the feeling, and push away all of my thoughts. The same as when I first got here, it doesn't matter now. Deal with the current situation.
"Newt?! Newt have you seen Sky?" Minho yells from in front of the homestead, I can hear him from where I sit.
"No I haven't." I answer walking out from behind the wall. He turns around, then realizes it's me.
"Don't do that to me." He says pulling me into a tight hug. "Where were you?"
"Err.. I got back early...They needed me in the med-jack room, then I came out here for air." I explain.
"Why did they need you?"
"Well...Ben got out and tried to kill Thomas, Alby shot him and now they're patching him up, and we got another greenie, a girl in a coma with a note saying she's the last one ever and things are going to change and...." I spout, all the information coming out in a jumbled mess.
"Wait what? Slow down." Minho says looking at me like I'm speaking another language. I repeat myself, slower this time.
"Woah." Is all he says when I finish.
"I know." I say shaking my head in disbelief, two greenies in two days? Unheard of.
"What are they doing with Ben?" He asks curiously.
"Banishing him at sundown." Kate says cutting in on our conversation. "I talked to Clint and he said Alby decided that without a gathering."
"Well clearly, unless they had a gathering without us." I say glumly. Not that it would have mattered, everyone would have voted for that anyways.
"Oh ya I forgot you guys are on the council." Kate says. Minho stays silent, looking off in the distance instead.
"Should we eat dinner or?" I ask my stomach reminding me that all I've eaten today was half an apple. I feel bad in light of the situation, but what else am I supposed to do?
"Ya lets go." Minho finally agrees, walking towards the homestead. Kate and I follow.
Dinner is unusually quiet, no one wants to talk after everything that's happened today. Only Newt joins us, the rest of our friends busy with the girl and Ben. Ben. The thought of a banishing brings thoughts of grievers. The image of a griever is all it takes, and my appetite is gone. Replaced by a sick feeling that won't go away.
"I'm going to bed." I announce, pushing back my tray and standing up. I have no intentions of watching ben's banishment, since only keepers are required to go. Plus I'm not feeling too good at the moment. Newt nods giving me a knowing look, banishings are terrible things.
"Are you ok?" Minho asks grabbing my hand to stop me from leaving.
"I'll be fine, I just don't feel to good." I answer faking a smile.
"Shuck it, are you sick? What's wrong? I don't want you alone if somethings wrong." He says worriedly. Apparently he doesn't get the hint, while its true I don't feel well, mostly I just don't want to watch Ben's banishing.
"I'll go with her, I was thinking of heading to bed anyways." Kate offers, standing up next to me. Minho studies us for a minute before letting go of my arm.
"Ok feel better, night Sky."
"Night." I reply heading up stairs to my room.
"Thanks." I tell Kate once were inside.
"No thank you, I didn't want to watch it anyways, but I didn't want to look stupid either, you gave us both an excuse." She says with a shudder. I nod in response, flopping down on top of my bed.
I feel bad for Minho, he has to push one of his friends into the maze, knowing he probably won't come back out. I don't think I could do it. I should really be there, say goodbye to Ben and support Minho, but I just can't bring myself to go. I console myself with the thought that once someone is stung, they're not really themselves anymore. Also, Ben did try to kill Thomas, so he kinda deserves it..... But I still feel bad. Today sucks, I just hope tomorrow will be better.
