XXXIII. Bonfire 2
Sky's POV
I wake up in darkness, to the rise and fall of Minho's steady breathing. I sit up, careful not to wake him, and look at my watch. Almost sunrise, time for him to go back in the slammer. I cover his mouth with mine, to keep him quiet before shaking him awake, he looks shocked and confused for a minute before realizing where he is. He kisses back, pulling me down to him, and wrapping his arms around me. I pull away laughing and shaking my head. He groans, rolling over and burying his face in the pillow, unwilling to get up. I, on the other hand, slept better than I have since I got here, and am ready to go.
"You have to get up." I whisper, laughing as I attempt to roll him over. He does, sighing as he sits up beside me. "What did you not sleep good?" I snicker, he's usually the early riser.
"No I..." He doesn't finish, a strange expression crossing his face. His usually perfect hair sticks up at odd angles, making me giggle. "What?" He asks looking confused.
"Your hair."
"Yours isn't any better." He retorts, but I didn't need him to tell me that, I already knew mine was a mess. It always is in the morning.
"Ya but mine is always a mess." I says brushing through it with my fingers.
"Not always, besides yours looks good messy." He yawns getting to his feet.
"Thanks I think..." I say not sure whether to take that as a compliment or an insult.
A couple minutes later I've put away the sleeping bags and pillows, and we stand in front of the slammer doors.
"You have to go back in." I tell him, playing with the keys in my pocket.
"Ya I know..." He sighs kicking a rock, which goes skipping across the ground. I don't want to make him go back, but it sure beats both of us getting banished. What's that old saying? Sugar helps with medicine or something like that?
"It's only for a little while." I say, then I plant a quick kiss on his lips, or what was supposed to be quick, before shoving him inside. "See ya later." I tease with a smile, dramatically putting the keys back in my pocket.
"Not fair! You cheated!" He shouts, pouting like a child as I walk away. I laugh, sticking my tongue out at him before taking off jogging.
I slip into my room just in time, flopping down on my bed and pretending to be asleep. Kate will be waking up any minute now. A few minutes later I'm proved right.
"Sky, sky wake up." Kate shakes me 'awake' even though I wasn't sleeping. I roll over, pretending to yawn, and ask what time it is.
"Time to go get your stupid boyfriend, so we can go run."
"How did you know about that?" I ask, considering Kate isn't on the council. She jerks her thumb toward a still sleeping Mal. I should have guessed. Mal -unfairly- doesn't have to be up for another hour. Oh the perks of being a runner, but I'll take it, early mornings and all, I never wanted anything else. Mal likes to play it safer, not that Newt would have let her become a runner even if she wanted to. That's one of the differences between Minho and Newt, the way the are protective. Newt protects by keeping her away from anything dangerous, thus his making sure Mal got a 'safe' job. While Minho on the other hand, fought to make sure I got the most dangerous jobs in the glade. He'll let me do dangerous things, but only if he's by my side. I like it better that way, I would go crazy being stuck in the glade all the time, I guess I'm a bit addicted to danger. He is too, which is why we work so well together. The funny thing is though, when I'm hurt, it's the opposite. Minho goes into hyper-protective mode, while Newt's like "eh she's fine." The difference there? Minho knows better than to listen when I say I'm fine, while Newt assumes I'm telling the truth. Usually I'm not actually fine. Oops? All these thoughts run through my head as we reach the jail cell, Newt and Alby in tow. Earlier I slipped Newt his keys, pretending he dropped them on the floor. Not gonna lie, I was pretty proud of myself for thinking of that one.
"Morning sunshine." Kate says greeting a not-too-happy Minho.
"Hey rainbows." He replies, never missing a beat. "Morning Sky." He says, like its the first time he's seen me today.
"Morning." I answer, struggling to hide my laughter. Newt is struggling too, covering his mouth and coughing every few seconds, which only makes it harder for me not to laugh.
Eventually Minho is free and we head off to the kitchen to grab breakfast running for the day. Minho insists I still need to run with him, and I don't put up much of an argument, running alone can get boring.
I wave my goodbye to Kate as we jog off into the maze. Off into the exit-less corridors designed to drive us insane.
At the end of the day we return to the glade, jogging through the doors a couple of minutes before they close. Tonight is the bonfire, and I can see some of the gladers have already started setting up. I'm excited for the party, but unfortunately, we have to map first. I sigh, and follow Minho into the map room.
"No it was there." Minho instructs pointing to a line I've drawn on the my paper. He stands behind me, arms wrapped around my waist, resting his head on my shoulder, watching me draw our map, and correcting me when it's wrong. I erase the line and start again. He kisses my neck, and I freeze, the pencil making a scribble across the middle of the paper. I hear Minho laugh softly, and I elbow him as his lips press against my neck again.
"I'll never get this shuck map done if you don't quit that," I say, erasing the mistake. Minho's lips are brushing my skin again when I hear the door freak.
"Woah... uh." Ben stammers as he enters the room. He backs up and looks awkwardly like he isn't sure what he's supposed to do. Minho and I only laugh and return to our work. After several tries, I finally finish, tossing the map in one of the open chests. I throw my pencil on the table and jog outside, pulling a piece of Kate's hair as I run by where she stands finishing her map.
"Ouch! Hey! Sky!" I hear her yell after me. I laugh and continue out the door, I'm in a better mood today, and I hope it lasts.
The bonfire is almost ready by now, the last pieces of wood being laid on the pile. Gladers mill around, waiting for the fun to begin.
"Aww too bad." Minho says when he stops beside me.
"Too bad what?"
"Too bad they're already done, you don't get to stare at me this time." He answers giving me a wry smile.
"Ha. Ha. Very funny." I say remembering back to my first bonfire, and our first kiss. The memory brings back a surge of happiness, causing me to smile for no reason.
"What?" He asks noticing my smile.
"Nothing I was just thinking."
"It better have been about me." He says, smirking.
"You wish ." I reply punching him in the arm, but pressing a kiss to his lips, before running off to find Mal.
I find her, sitting alone on the doorstep to the homestead. I wonder why she's alone on her party day?
"What's wrong?" I ask sitting down next to her.
"Oh nothing I'm just waiting for New-"
a voice cuts off her explanation.
"Hey Love, ready to go?" Newt asks stepping out from behind the homestead. I smile and poke Mal in the arm, causing her to blush.
"Awww." I gush batting my eyelashes dramatically.
"Oh hey Sky." Newt says noticing me for the first time. Much to my disappointment, he completely ignores my teasing.
"Hey Newt." I reply standing up, "well guess I'll go find Minho and Kate... and leave you two alone." I announce dramatically winking at Mal, who rolls her eyes and laughs at me.
"See ya at the bonfire, sky." She replies, waving me off. I turn and walk back to the bonfire, which is ready to be lit.
"I want to light it!" I yell, right before Alby strikes a match. "Let me do it!"
"Your obsession with fire is a little scary Skylar." Alby says, but hands over the matches anyway. I strike one, watching it burn for a few seconds before dropping it in. As usual the gladers burst in to cheers, chanting Mal's name as Newt drags her reluctantly into the circle. Her face is bright red with embarrassment from all the attention.
Soon the music begins and everyone spreads out, some talking quietly, others playing the game of circle fighting, others dancing to the music. I find Mal, hiding her face in Newt's chest, still flustered over the attention.
"Congrats you're one of us now." I say pulling her away from Newt and into a hug. Kate -who along with Clint, found us earlier- is next in line.
"Try to have some fun." She says. "Oh and drink some of this." Kate hands Mal a cup full of yellowish liquid.
"Don't do it it's a trap!" I shout sticking out my tongue in disgust.
"When have you tried it?" Newt asks turning to look at me.
"Ummm... The night after my bonfire..." I stammer, even though he already knows the pranks were Kate and I's master piece.
"I see." He says giving Kate a dirty look. She opts to laugh it off.
"Hey bonfire nights are good luck." Minho tells Mal with a wink. She looks to me confused, earning a snicker from Newt. I almost forgot that he saw us.
"Or bad luck, depending on how you look at it." I say tilting my head to the side. This seems to confuse Mal even more, and she looks around for anyone to help her understand.
"Um no, I am not bad luck." Minho retorts putting his hands on his hips. I think Mal finally figured it out, at least sort of, because now she's laughing along with the rest of us.
"Pssh sure......" Kate says. "You didn't have to deal with her the next day."
"Kate!" I scold, reminding her of our agreement to never talk about that. Minho looks down, his mood changing in an instant.
"Good luck Clint." Minho mutters only loud enough for me to hear. I laugh causing him to snap his head up. Guess I wasn't supposed to hear that. Oh well it's not like it's exactly a secret.
